Bornem Dubbel is dark with chestnut tones against the light. It starts with a dense head and leaves some nice ringed lacing as it recedes to a thin uniform layer.

The aroma is belgian candy-sweet malt and chocolate bread with some dark fruits and spicy/perfumy notes in the background. The taste is pretty much like the aroma... good stuff.

The mouthfeel is creamy with a touch of coursness midway from the alcohol.

A good belgian and quite drinkable.

A: Poured a from bottle into a tulip glass - ruby/cloudy, with a off white head of about 3 fingers of soapy fine bubbles with good retention and lacing.

S: carmel, mild yeast, dried Fruit (fig/plum)

T: Malty, dried fruit forward (almost sharp), a little syrupy but adequate carbonation to help cleanse the palate

M: Good mouthfeel, not too carbonated, but sufficient so as to not be syrupy

O: A very malty/fruit forward dubbel, and paired well with a sharp cheese. I would purchase again, excellent price point for a very good beer

a: a mixture of dark ruby red and murky brown. holding it up to the light reveals some burnt copper notes as well. impressive 3 finger tan head thats pretty solid up top and hangs around for a while

s: dates, figs, raisins, light brown sugar, some juicy generic berries, and a hint of diacetyl butter

t: its pretty on par with the nose, and quite 'juicy' for a dubbel. figs, raisins, and dates pop right away. that fades to a really solid caramel malt backbone with some brown sugar. in the background a nice roasted nutty flavor helps to cut some of the sweetness. there is some dactyl in here though

m: lighter side of medium. high amount of carbonation - maybe why the dark fruits pop so much. not really a syrup-like mouthfeel like i'd expect (not a bad thing)

o: i've passed this by so many times before actually trying it, and its a shame i did. this is a really solid dubbel. it has a lot more going on than i would have expected, and all the flavors are pronounced, yet balanced well and play off each other nicely. definitely pick this up and give it a go. the one thing i do notice that brings it down some is that buttery taste in here. its just a hint too much - but not extremely overboard

Undated bottle at 50 degrees into goblet
Odor of malt, somewhat like manure
Head average (3 cm), off white, creamy with rocks, rapidly diminishing to broken layer 1 -2 mm thick
Lacing poor - few islands of small bubbles
Body dark brown, muddy
Flavor slightly bitter, some date/fig overtones, no alcohol, no hops, no diacetyl; basically pretty underwhelming
Palate medium, watery, soft carbonation

Meh. A passable Belgium, but not something I’ll seek out.
