A – I tell ya, these Belgians and their carbonation. Crimson-brown body with a lot of sediment in there, somewhat translucent. The head is just a towering light beige with super tightly knit bubbles that leaves chunks of lacing strewn across the top of the glass. Not sure how I feel about the sediment, but that aside, so far so good.

S – The smell is very interesting. Fruity and spicy with cherries, plums, a slight ginger/cinnamon, and it has a tartness to it as well that is very pleasant. It has a sugary malt character to it as well.

T – Unfortunately I’m not really overcome with joy upon sipping this. Entirely unfortunate as the appearance and nose caused me to believe I might just be in for something special here. It still tastes rather good but it is slightly off, slightly bland. For what it’s worth it’s entirely enjoyable but I just felt like it was going to be great. As far as flavor goes, you get the fruit here as well, but it is very dialed back and softer/more crisp. It is delightfully drinkable, but it really just lacks a defining element so that the taste is somewhat “blah”—muddled as it were, and muted. It has a very slight sour element to it (which is actually one of it’s redeeming factors) but it is overall just kind of bready. I think the operative word here is drinkable, and that it has in spades, but in the flavor department it is not a rockstar.

M – The mouthfeel is outstanding, I will grant it that. Just the right amount of carbonation, and if it had more flavor the effect the carbonation and medium-light body would have produced a symphony of lusciousness that would delight all who drink it. But even the mouthfeel is a little lackluster in the face of such wanting flavor.

O – A gorgeous beer, a great nose, above average taste, great mouthfeel. I like this beer, it is very good. But it is not wonderful, nor great, nor inspiring. It is definitely worth a try, and I might even buy it again, but it really is not spectacular.

Part of the Van Steenberge sampler pack.

A: Off white colored head, lots of lacing showing up after the initial pour. A bit of a murky dark ruby tint.

S: Big milk chocolate, toffee notes, molasses, graham cracker notes. Fig, dark cherry and plum, too. Really damn good.

T: Cherry, toffee, caramel, wheat bread. Some tartness, a bit unusual and out of place. A letdown after the aroma.

M: A bit thin, fizzy, almost. Was expecting something more fuller.

O: A good BSDA ... could have been more maltier, I'd probably buy this again if nothing else was good on the shelf.

Valkenburg, Holland: 21 Oct 2012 in 't Pumpke. As I'd had such a bad time with the bottles I thought I'd try the beer again when I saw it was on-tap in this lovely 'Belgian style' bar. Glad I did, because this is a different animal to those off bottles I had some years back.

Came in the same glass and stand I remembered: everything else was different.

Deep reddy brown body (the pub is very dark too): the tanned head was full and stayed.

The nose was malty and yeasty with a hint of sourness that does detract from the overall smell or taste of the beer.

The taste was semi-roasted maltiness and earthy, woody notes, some spiced coffee and a splash of caramel. Bordering on sweet but never getting there.

A lot better than my first review of this beer.

Big light tan head settles into a nice lacing above a clear burnt reddish amber colored beer.

Dark roasted caramel to molasses malts mixed with dark fruits such as apricots aroma.

Sour on dark fruits with a slight burnt molasses to toffee taste.

A light dry aftertaste with just a hint of the dark fruits hanging around on this medium bodied beer.

A pretty good taste, although I'd like it a little more if the sourness was a little less.

Pours a murky brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to a thin cap on top of the beer. Foamy rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is pretty mild and is of malt, caramel, fruits, and alcohol. Taste is of toasted malt, dark fruit, caramel, and some hop flavors on the finish. There is a mild bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is tasty and easy to drink.

Another from the sampler. Dark rust colored pour, maybe a finger of cream foam. Laced just a bit.

Aroma, pretty malty, caramel, some molasses. Very faint yeasty spice.

Taste, toffee and yeast spice here. Finishes with corriander, nutmeg. Fairly straight forward.

Not quite mid bodied to me. Ample to higher carbonation. Pretty easy drinking like the others in the sampler, just not as good as the Draak or Piraat.
