Got this 500mL bottle from Amity Wine & Spirits in New Haven CT for $3.49. Code stamped on the back label: 20CF. Served cold in a chilled pilsener glass.

Slightly hazy pale yellow brew shows a modest level of carbonation that puts up an attractive 1" of frothy eggshell foam that leaves good lace.

Smell has a light adjunct sweetness with notes of mild lemon, grass, a bit of skunk and minerals.

Mouthfeel is dry and crisp with a zippy carbonation, slightly viscous.

Taste is dry, none of the sweetness from the aroma is apparent. Flavors of lemon peel, moldy straw, a bit of honey comb mixed with yeast, and a metallic twang mixed with skunky hop.

Finishes with some lingering skunky lemongrass hop and little bitter honey. There was some gritty sludge in the bottom of the bottle, got it in the last sip. WTF was that??

Pours what can only be described as a yellow color in the snifter. Coarse head. Tingly on the tongue. Very light body.

All the hallmarks of a cheap Eastern European industrial brew: musty, cardboard smell, metallic aftertaste, bitterness without any hop aroma, slightly sweet malt liquor taste, old apple flavor. Makes me think of greens overcooked in an aluminum pot.

Overall, a rally mediocre example of a Euro lager. More like an adjunct brew. As anemic as Stella Artois is, it's in another dimension of clean flavor than this stew. I should have known this was cheap for a reason.

Interesting beer. It almost has the characteristics of a tripel, but is very light and refreshing. Head and lacing are fantastic. The smell is yeasty and a bit metallic. The taste is very mild, almost watered down, but good - sweet with a hint of licorice. Worth a try if you like German and Belgium beers and you can buy for a decent price.

Van Steenberge - Tikka Gold

Stubby pint sized bottle, pours a perfectly clear golden yellow. A good froth provides solid lacing on the glass. Aroma is a bit grainy, with light floral hops. In the taste, grainy, pale malts and a ghost like hop contributing an even bitterness. Fizzy, carbonated mouthfeel. Overall, a decent pilsner, one made especially for the export market.

Tikka gold pours a slightly hazy 24k gold with a light frothy skim remaining on the surface. Pleasant nose of lightly roasted malt with sweet plantain and a hint of clove.
The flavor is well bittered although not outwardly hoppy. It is a dry, stern, rigid brew that is slightly backward, perhaps requiring some additional bottle age, as the sediment on the bottom of the bottle promises. It is slightly Duvelesque in character, though not as warm and full bodied. Though this sounds like a disfavorable opinion of this product, there is no intent for it to be so. This brew is quite unique; it is a beer that has terroir and speaks of its locality in abundance. Lacking any overt sweetness, this brew represents itself well, either solo or with a robust meal. A great effort by the brewmaster.

A: Uh oh, starts to rise up the neck quickly almost erupting as I crack the top, but no infection flavors. Despite that, almost no head rises up and fades pretty quickly with a messy Belgian style fluffy head, with a crystal clear golden orange amber color.

N: Meh, some sweet sugars, some macro extract like aromas. A little toasty sweet lager aromas, hints of Belgian malts, but mostly that extract sweet syrupy aroma. A little fruit and apple even.

T: Yep, more of the same. Mostly sweet, some syrup flavors, almost a corn syrup, and extract syrups like a macro would typically be, but at least it has some Belgian malts too. Light lager flavors with some sweetness and toasty malts. A slight fruit flavor too.

M: Medium body with decent carbonation.

F: A slight metallic taste starts to develop, that not so great flavor that often comes from lagers. Then some lingering sweetness but a slight extract and even adjunct like sweet syrupy flavor. Also a weird musty no to pleasant flavor also lingers with hints of fruit and apple. A slight sticky sweetness. A slight lager crispness is there but interrupted by the off flavors.

500ml bottle.

Pours a crystal clear pale gold with tons of carbonations bubbles and a large white, but not tightly-foamed head. The head has decent retention actually and leaves some decent lacing.

The smell is ultra-mellow with mostly bready malt and a pinch of grassy, cirtusy hops.

The taste is decently balanced for a pils, there is an overlying bitterness over the bready malt. The flavor seems to lean a bit towards the euro pale lager, but this is still a good light lager.

THis brewery does much better for sure, but this isn't bad.

Pours a light gold body with a good head that died alright but left some lace. I don't pick up too much in the nose but there are some floral hops as well a touch of fruit and sweet malt. Light-bodied, smooth, has a bitter hoppiness that is balanced with some fruity sweetness like apple and a touch of sweet malt. Has a crisp finish thanks to moderate carbonation but while pleasantly passing the tongue there is still some flat blandness. An alright pils but kinda falls short.

Had at Granville Moore's in DC. Poured into a snifter.

A: Clear yellow with a slight haze and about a finger of white head.

S: Largely floral. Some lagery yeasts, followed by a bit of butteriness.

T: Some adjunct malts, a bit of citrus mixed with honey sweetness, and a floral tinge with lots of diacetyl rounding out the end.

M: Very lagery in feel. Crisp with a dry finish.

D: Other than Jupiler, I haven't tried another Belgian lager. This is an interesting foray for Brouwerij Van Steenberge, which usually makes an array of excellent Belgian ales (the Piraat is one of my favorites). In my opinion, they should stick to ales.

Pours a pretty honey straw color, crystal clear clarity, nice dense white head that left some clingy lacing. The aroma is very faint and sweet grains. The first sip tells me that this is a pilsner. Noticable noble hop grassiness with a dry, cracker like malt. The flavor is quite mellow, not as sharp as a pilsner should be. There seems to be a large grainy presence that neutralizes the pils flavors. The feel is light with good carbonation but doesn't have that crisp bite that a pilsner should have. Overall, has a Euro lager flavor, some pils some american macro. Just ok. Not representative of a great brewing country.

Pours light golden and clear into a Pilsner glass. An inch of nearly white head settles slowly as there is an active small bubble carbonation is going on here, helping retention. Offers good lacing as well.

Smells of light raw grain with little hop presence, some rather limited noble hop notes arriving later.

Taste is smooth and somewhat malty but largely lacks the flavors I've come to associate with Euro. Pilsners. Like the smell, the flavor is unoffensive but kind of bland.

Steady carbonation helps the feel of this beer somewhat. A bit bready on the finish with just a hint of sweetness on a short lived finish. Average drinkability given the unexciting nature of this beer which degrades as the carbonation lessens. Overall a light take on the style given the low level of hops and lack of defining malt flavors. Average at best.

The aroma is dusty, metallic, (hoppy) floral, and malty in an adjunct kind of way. The appearance is pale gold with a slight haze and a beautiful foamy head. The flavor is like the aroma making this more complex than almost any pale lager. The palate is thin. Overall this is an interesting beer that I want to like more.

This is an all-around average beer. My bottle poured a very light and hazy straw colored pilsner. The nose revealed a slightly sweet yeast along with hints of citrus. There was small head retention upon pouring. In the mouth, this is not a beer to write home about. This is not saying it's a completely bad beer but one that is definitely forgettable. I don't want to waste your time writing exactly what I tasted on this one because simply put, it's an average pilsner. It's so light, I bet it would be a great session beer in 110 degree full sun weather!

Pours with a brilliantly clear, pale, just off-white colored head. The beer is a brilliantly clear gold color that get fairly pale when held up to the light. Sweet grain notes mix with ample DMS in the form of creamed corn. Perhaps a touch of herbal hop character is just noticeable, but the DMS is big enough here that it is really hard to tell. The DMS is actually a bit obnoxious after just a short while.

Sweet grain flavors up front of honey-like grain, sweet corn and pale malt move to a dry finish that has a touch of hop bitterness as well as a light herbal note. As far as balance goes there is just enough hop character to balance out the sweet grain notes and keep them from being cloying. The DMS is not quite as objectionable in the flavor as it was in the aroma, but it does tend to stick to the palate a bit with a vegetal, cooked corn note. Appropriately light bodied, though not watery, and the carbonation provides a nice fizz to the texture.

Just not all that good, even by pale lager standards. The DMS definitely ruins the aroma and don't let this warm up much as it really starts to intrude into the flavor as well.

Pours a clean golden orange-ish yellow color with a nice big white head. Aromas consist of a sweet Belgian malt and a pilsner hop. In the taste, a sweet malt and just enough hops to remind you it is a pilsner. A smooth malty mouthfeel and a clean, yet small bitter mouthfeel. A very nice beer, the best Belgian pils I think I have had yet.
