330ml bottle poured into Kasteel chalice. A: Pale amber, half a finger head, good
retention, some lacing, slight haze. S: Esters plus some booze. T: Heavy on the
esters and diacytel, lighter on the molasses, touch of bitterness, similar to other
Van Steenberge beers, kept the booze under wraps. M: Light, crisp and well
carbonated, very drinkable for the high abv. O: I had wondered if it was a Bornem
Tripel clone, but despite likenesses it wasn’t. If you like Piraat and the others you’ll
enjoy this.

750mL bottle

I never mention bitterness in my reviews, my bitterness taste buds are ridiculously under-

APPEARANCE : Yellow body with a slight but definite orange tint. Fair head that vanishes rather quickly, leaving some good lacing. Almost entirely clear.

SMELL : First nose is apples, apples and apples, not quite granny-smith, but almost. Still has some of those red-apple aromas. Second nose brings out some rich yeast bready side that melds quite amazingly well with the apple. Really softens the sharper side of those apples, actually, mellows the whole into something that seems somehow more cushy, pretty much pear-like. Third nose makes those yeast aromas more precise and into something not too far from Westmalle Tripel. The apples and pears still dominate the whole, though. Maybe a little of a simple nose, or maybe the complexities are too well blended together. Anyhow, quite pleasing and impressive.

TASTE : Hmm, hard know what to say. Very, very fruity. Also, the yeasts are a lot more present on the palate, giving this brew a definitely more common belgian blond ale kind of twist, rather than what that champagne-like nose had me expecting. Still, apple pie, pears, etc. Very pleasing.

MOUTHFEEL : Not as sharp as the nose tended to make me believe, and definitely not as sharp and dry as most other belgian pale ales I've tasted. It's not quite sweet, but it sure has perceptibly more body than what I'm used for for this style.

OVERALL : Quite a good beer, though I feel it should somehow have been more complex, and that those complexities should've been more obviously discerned. I feel it to be complex, but the whole is so thightly packed that it ends up being one big clunky block of impressive tastes and aromas, with the apples and pears poking out. Absolutely not bad, one of the very good belgian pale ales I've had, but I ache to taste what it might've been, to taste the product this beer tries to be, idealistically.

From a 330 ml bottle into a snifter.

A: poured a nice clear and vibrant gold with a fierce 3 finger head that stayed for a long time before finally giving way to some heavy lacing.

S: yeasts, sweet fruits and cloves. Some light alcohol present on the nose as well.

T: follows the nose with an earthiness that was not expected. The booziness of the beer also really comes through.

M: good carbonation, dry finish bordering on astringent.

O: this was a nice beer, but not a memorable one. The fact that the booziness of this beer was too up front is probably what works against it the most. There are good flavors to this beer but the alcohol taste almost washed it out.

Bottle 4 of 6 of Belgian taster's pack from Van Steenberge. Served fairly cold into a oversized wine glass.

Appearance - Aggressive pour yielded 3 fingers of white voluminous head. Beer is golden like a darker champagne and hazier (but not too hazy). The head receded quickly and there were plenty of effervescent bubbles in the glass. While the head did dissipate there was a solid half finger of a white cap resting on top of the beer throughout.

Smell - Light booziness, summer fruits, some sweet malts. Also smells like summer desserts and an element of funky Belgian yeasts which is not surprising. Also freshly baked bread is another aroma in this complex brew.

Taste - The 9.0% ABV hits home here and makes the beer boozy with a combination of summer fruits and a slightly earthy undertone. This new earthy flavor paints a picture in my head that hundreds of years ago this beer was being created and cellared in some dark dank remote area of the abbey. The beer also has trace spicy elements given the tingling in my mouth afterwards. Transitions to a slightly bitter finish.

Mouthfeel - Crisp refreshing finish, but retaining its rich and velverty BSPA without being syrupy. Also leaves a pleasant tingling sensation, much in the same way champagne often can. High carbonation.

Overall - Well done, love the sensations in my mouth. While the flavors are well done, they are fairly standard for BSPA's but it's the other senses that elevate it above the standard for the style. Would repeat this purchase if I could get just this beer instead of having to spend $19 to buy a six pack.
