served in a snifter at the Trappe Door

A: photo on BA captures the appearance well except that my serving had a remarkably thick and creamy head that, for a while, completely coated the glass on the way down.

Yeasty and fruity, but at a moderate level for style. A bit sweet for style, but not cloying or objectionable. Some diactyl in the flavor that blended nicely with the feel, aroma and other taste components.

M: nice creamy/buttery feel.

Served from tap into a Trappe Door tulip. Poured red-orange with a two finger off-white head that subsided to a minimal amount slowly. Maintained nice lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, floral, sweet alcohol, banana, and fruit. The flavor was of sweet malt, fruit, banana, bread, dark fruit, subtle milk chocolate, sweet alcohol, and very subtle wood. It had a medium feel on the palate with medium-high carbonation. Overall this was a fairly good brew. This was actually one of the more complex brews I’ve had in quite awhile as far as flavor goes. Every sip brought about a whole new experience. The aroma was a little bit of a letdown as compared to the flavor, but you can’t win them all I suppose. A really well done brew that I wouldn’t mind having again in the future.

Brewed exclusively for 'Waterhuis aan de Bierkant' in Ghent by Brouwerij Van Steenberge. On tap, it is 11.0% ABV; bottled, 11.5%. Pours an impressive clear amber with a huge, billowing white head that was very persistent. Great lacing. One whiff gives a hugely sweet, fruity aroma. Smelled strongly of caramelized sugar. Overwhelmingly sweet taste. After a couple more sips, some plum-like esters became noticeable, with a bit of spice at the end. Big alcohol. Thick feel that borders on syrupy. Pretty bad.

Draft at Gourmet Haus Staudt. Bright, copper-colored, slightly hazy. The tall white head retains nicely in the wide-mouthed goblet. Plum-like fruit aroma with a big dark candi sugar sweetness behind it and a hint of alcohol. Bittersweet taste leaning toward sweet. Plums, raisins, plenty of dark candi sugar sweetness. There's a bit of sharp alcohol, but nothing suggesting 11%. It ends on a hoppy, somewhat solventy note. The finish is brief but faintly astringent. Good, but not stellar for the style.

Had this on tap at Deep Ellum.
It is listed on the Deep Ellum menu as a Belgian Blond.

Klokke Roeland is the house beer at Chez Leontine in Ghent. Chez Leontine is part of group of bar/restaurants collectively known as Het Waterhuis aan de Bierkant. I don't think it is bottled at all, and only recently, to my knowledge, has been available here in the states.

A - Amber pour with a fluffy white head. Served in a goblet with a heavy paperweight stem.

S - Sweet on the nose, lots of honey, fruit, candied sugar and just a touch of funk.

T/M - The first sip is a delight. The alcohol is almost nonexistent. Sweet dark fruit. There is just enough carbonation to keep it on the lighter side of a heavy mouthfeel. The sweet overpowers any interesting nuances that Klokke may have hidden. I want a lighter body, a little more carbonation, a little more hop bitterness and yeasty funk.

D - As the beer disappears into my belly I find the sweetness to become overwhelming. I'm glad I tried this but I wouldn't go for it again.

First had: on tap at Teresa's, Wayne, PA

Served in a signature glass (I want one), dark reddish amber in color with a nice, dense, off-white head, which retained well and laced well, even if it wasn't that big. After fading, a gentle swirl rejuvenates the head a bit. Aroma of yeast, spice, and all kinds of fresh fruit. Taste of sweet malts, caramel, bready yeast, apples, white wine, and raisins, and a light bit of spice. Finished nutty and a bit stale, possibly from the elevated alcohol, but good otherwise. Medium-bodied and moderately drinkable.

Consumed May 12th, 2012 at Brews Brothers, Galveston, Texas.

Appearance: medium burnished copper/amber. Nice one-finger head that provides some sticky sheeting. Good looking!

Aroma - sour cherries, tawny malts and honey.

Flavor is clean: crystal malts, tart and low but present bitterness. Just outstanding!

Good carbonation helps mask the high ABV. I had no idea it was 11%!

What a find. I'm so happy to have had this one. Dangerously drinkable.
