A flanders sour aroma, wine like, alcohol whiff. Nice redish sight. Ok in taste, understated cherry and not overly sour. Wood, vanilla. Moderate carbonation. Medium to thin mouthfeel, but refreshing easy drink. Underated, worth a try, and I would have again.

Bottle: Poured a brownish red color beer with a medium off-white foamy head with some pretty good retention. Aroma is quite sour and you can already feel the effect of the oak on this beer. Taste is quite acid with some subtle sweetness at the end. Cheery feels is less present then in the Rodenbach Grand Cru but can still be detected. Overall, I find this one to be a good Flemish sour ale and would even say that it seems to be underrated compared to some other Flemish Sour ale.

This poured out with a deep brownish red color. The head was fluffy at first but settles rather quickly and doesn't leave much behind in lacing or retention. The smell of the beer had a wine like quality to it and smells pretty tart on the nose. The taste follows the same basic path at the smell does. The mouthfeel is dry and tart, it's got some very light carbonation. Overall this Beer isn't too bad, I'd say it's worth checking out.

Pours a dark brown. Foggy. Minimal creme head. Nose is biting. That sharp Brett infused kind of thing. Wood and cherry tones are there. Flavor is a biting vinegar. A little too much so IMO. I'd like a bit more wood and fruit tones. Still though, it works well enough for sour freaks like me. There is still a good enough balance to it. Feel is typical. Liquid is good and carbonation is a bit biting. You really have to appreciate the sours to be able to dig this one. If you're in that boat, you'll like it.

Big thanks to bosse for tossing this into our trade. I'm under the impression this beer is an ancient predecessor to Monk's Cafe Flemish Sour Red Ale. My bottle lists an ABV of 6% and has a best before range of 1987 through 1990 with no date punched - I suppose it's between 22 and 27 years old? Served in a wine glass.

A - Upon removing the cage the cork started to come out on its own. After moving to the sink the cork made a loud pop, but there was thankfully no gushing. Poured a semi-transparent dark brown and copper color with a finger of tan foam that quickly dissipated to a solid cap and ring. Pretty good looking after all these years!

S - The smell also exploded out of the bottle, filling the room with funky horse-blanket, sour cherries, red wine, rum-soaked dark fruits, and caramel. It actually reminded me a little of the Enigma I had last week but with more acidity to it. In any case it smelled terrific, and exceptional considering the age.

T - Unfortunately time has not been as kind to this element of the brew. The taste is very mellow, with a strong butterscotch/caramel flavor and a touch of oxidation. There is an element of tart cherry that builds on the top of the palate after a few glasses, but the age has smoothed out most of the interest.

M - Medium body, slightly sticky finish, light carbonation tingle. It's appropriate for a Flanders Oud Bruin, but nothing special.

D - My wife, Greg (gory4d), and I split the 750ml bottle three ways and it was pretty easy to drink - I had no problems downing a couple glasses. This brew is probably past its prime, but was still pretty enjoyable.

Pours a deep brown color and is topped by a frothy, thin, light brown colored head. The aroma has that expected twang to it that is a mix of sour woodiness, a hint of balsamic, and a bit of cherry-like tartness. In the finish is even a touch of sweetness that helps to accentuate the cherry-like aromatic notes. All in all the aroma is quite nice, though it could perhaps use a bit more complexity.

The taste is fairly dry, in fact it has hardly any malt sweetness to it. Instead there is a nice tartness which is balanced by a certain fullness that this beer has. The fullness adds to the suggestive malt character that would have otherwise been accentuated by some sweetness. There is a sort of bready quality that reminds me of lightly toasted bread, and perhaps even a hint of chocolate in the finish. The tartness of this beer reminds me of tamarind with perhaps a hint of balsamic vinegar thrown into the mix.

This certainly a decent example of the style, and it is fairly tasty tipple to boot, but it could use a bit more complexity. The acidity makes it a bit too one dimensional; some extra malt, and perhaps even some more funk would make this quite a bit more enjoyable.

Vintage 2005.

The colour is red-brown, the beige compact head is finger thick.

The smell got sour “wheat beer” flavours, but also a vinegar-like lambic-note. There are hints of raspberries, redcurrant and lingonberry. The smell is very fresh and inviting.

The taste is lambic-sour but also fruity with flavours of raspberries and gooseberries. The sourness is replaced by a mild sweetness. The aftertaste is shorter than expected and dry with some fruity notes.

A fine belgian ale, but not exceptional.

250ml bottle. Bottle labeled 19/07/07.

Poured a medium reddish / brown color with a small sized off white head. With this one, I got wood (oak), cherries, toffee and I would call this one vinous. Tastes start off with stronger sour cherries then give way to chocolate (mmm, chocolate covered sour cherries), wood, and some other dark fruits. Nice cherry presence with lots of wood.

Review dated 12/19/2008, from the tap.

Called "Monks Cafe Flemish Sour Red Ale" at La Trappe in SF. Came out of the gates strong but pulled up a little lame maybe halfway through. This is a novelty beer, with a strong sweet vinegar flavor and cherries, but it is a little too much by the time you get to the end of it. Maybe I just had too many sour beers that day.

A dark ruby beer, a tan, with pink tones, head, rather small and quickly receding but wit some lacing.

Smelling of red sour fruits, cherry and rhubarbs.

The taste is actually quite sweet, dextrose with sour fruits, cherry, both the skin and the seeds.

Rather high carbonation, a foamy and refreshing feeling, a very light dryness.

A very good and solid original beer, refreshing in it's lack of hop character.

Very sour tart nose and palate, with hints of cherry (the skins) in both. Sweetish cherry start, with a sweet and sour finish, a bit vinegary, very refreshing full-flavoured flanders red, very cheap in belgium to, one of the best of its style (that i've had so far!!!!)

On tap @ the Ginger Man, listed as Bios Vlaamse Bourgogne, but I was told that this is pretty much the same beer that Monk's Cafe Flemish Sour Red Ale

Poured a deep ruby red/brown color into a tulip glass with a thin, fluffy, off white head. The smells of balsamic sour woodiness, with hints of burnt cherry. Tastes of lightly toasted bread, oak, cherries, and suttle chocolate Mouthfeel starts sweet and tart and finishes dry. I was hoping to have a little more complex brew here, it was a little of a let down

Pours a very murky dark brown in color with ruby highlights. Smell is extremely sour. Catches you off the bat. Very sour. Taste is very sour. Very highly carbonated, but still very sour. Some nice dark fruits, but the sourness takes over the beer and dominates. Very good beer. I would put this up against Rodenbach or the Ommegang Grand Cru that I just had a growler of. Well done.

Pours a dark amber with some reddish hues and little to no head, lots of sediment in the bottle.

Smells is very strong of tart cherry, vanilla and vinegar/funk.

Taste is delicious with all the thirst quenching bittersweet sourness that these beers provide. This one definitely has a bit of that barnyard funkiness from the Brett but it works well.

Really enjoyed this "Bio" beer, they seem to be a bit of the trend right now in Belgium. Just like the "Organic" beer trend here in the States.

Also called "Monk's Café Flemish Sour Red Ale" Pours hazy reddish brown into a tulip. Fine bubbly head with nice retention. Sour cherry and vinegar notes and flavor is just like the aroma. Thin with a bitter cherry finish. light to med body. A Nice sipper.

Bottel @ kulminator 25 cl vintage 2003 !!

The beer pours a dark brown color with a beige head.
The aroma is tart apple and tart grapes.
The taste is caramel malt as well as tart apples and grapes. The apple is dominant. Low-medium carbonation and a thin mouthfeel. A pretty nice sour beer that is a not as sour as some, but has a nice fruity flavor.

Served at Cambrinus Restaurant, Bruges, Belgium.

A- Poured from the bottle with a slightly opaque ruby-tinged brown body. Little bit of visible carbonation. The head was substantial, rocky, proteinaceous and off-white head with wonderful lacing.

S- Smells like a classic Flanders Red- sweet and sour, good maltiness with some lactic notes. A touch of oak in there as well.

T- In the mouth it's actually wonderful. Classic rich Flanders Red flavor- a wonderful balance of candy malt and crisp tartness from lactic/acetic acid. No hops detected, just a touch of oak. Very dry finish.

M- Thin body. The carbonation is relatively soft. Nothing too impressive. Quite average.

D- A lovely classic Flanders Red that goes down super-smooth. Very thirst quenching and delicious.

Pours a dark brown color with a reddish tint, almost like a wine. Smell is pungent and involves plums, raisins and other dark fruits. The taste is quite unique. Much like the plums and raisins mentioned before, but there is a hint of the more tasty wine in there. It leaves an aftertaste that is really enjoyable, of a sweetness like plums. This is a great beer that is unique, any one who is looking to try something new will enjoy.

Appearance was deep ruby red with a medium white head that settles quickly.

small bottle poured at 50f. Decent light tan head, acidic musty slightly sour odor, pleasant.

Taste is distinct from other versions of the style I have had. Initial almost candy-like tartness is quickly followed by a dry, slightly sour finish with very little sweetness at all. Woody notes dominate the finish. Further into the finish it becomes almost sweet, quite a contrast to the rest of the beer. This product is an unusual interpretation of the style typified by rodenbach and verhaeghe.

I would say without a doubt the long finish is the most striking aspect of this beer. I cannot pick up much resemblence between this and the monk's cafe product this brewery produces for a US customer.
