Pours hazy light gold with a small fine bubbled white head that laced well. I happen to love hazy beers, and have rated the appearance accordingly. In this case it lends a slightly luminous quality to the appearance. Plenty happening with the aroma, strong malty backbone with hints of tropical fruit (passionfruit?), honey with a light medicinal spiciness in the background. Taste confirms the malty backbone with honey evident, but this is well balanced with reasonably high levels of hop bitterness. Only negative on the taste was a very slight hint of acetone/latex flavours. Mouth to me was on the light side, well complemented with light fine carbonation. Any less carbonation and it would have been watery. Alcohol warming is very evident, but in a pleasant way which does not upset the balance. Very nice drop, to be savoured slowly sip by sip. Way too good for pirates.

Tried the dark ale in the past and somehow missed this one, but when I realized it was an 11% golden ale. I had a hard time not trying it out.

Appearance. Totally meets expectations. A nice, near amber, gold with tints of orange and yellow. Foams up nicely and keeps a gravelly cream coloured head.

The smell is soft, kind of sugary. There is a hint of cheap caramel. The kind you might have thrown at you during a parade in the clear cellophane wrap. A sort of corn husk smell. A tinge of damp hay. A little astringent and boozy. But this fits with what I had anticipated in buying a strong ale with a pirate on the label. The one thing that puts me off a bit is a soapy tone toward the end.

Taste is quite nice, it is a bit sweet, but not to sweet. A great spiced taste. The booze gives it a slight astringency. There is a strange herbal hop character to it. A taste that is somewhat reminiscent of cedar. A Belgian candy sugar taste. Hints yeast. It is biscuity and the cheap caramel tone comes through a bit. I pick up a bit of vanilla and raw grains.

Mouthfeel is great! It is a boozy and high ABV beer but it is incredibly light in body and the carbonation makes it quite fluffy. The booze cause some warmth, but it is pleasant. It is a tad dry too. A big surprise. But I really like it.

Overall, a pretty solid strong golden ale. Pleasant to drink, not at all patchy or clunky. Maybe one of the most interesting and most tasty Belgian golden ales I have had for a long time. I will be seeing if I can get a few more bottles of this soon.

330ml bottle into a goblet.

pours a clear light gold with a fluffy two finger white head. Really excellent head retention and lacing as I would expect from a Belgian ale.

Aroma is very spicy with a lot of coriander and orange peel. Plenty of Belgian yeasty spiciness in there too. Not a lot of complexity, however.

The flavor, unfortunately, lacks some of the intensity that is present in the aroma. There is bready malt evident behind the spice along with a slightly solvent note. The orange peel and coriander fade away somewhat quickly and the sweetness is a little more than I would expect from this style of beer.

Overall, I was a little let down. From a Belgian ale perspective, this beer is pretty low on the totem pole. It is just not very refined and falls below even some American versions of the style. I will avoid this beer in the future.

Cloudy dark amber pour, with a thick persistent white form. Smell isn't too intense. A clear signature of belgian yeast is present, strong malts, lightly hopped, strong on alcohol but very balanced. Carbonation is just perfect, and feels very heavy in the body. A tasty beer, without being overwhelming.
