Always the liberally hopped Belgian ale, its really no surprise to see Steenberge's endevors carrying them across the threshold and into a full blown Belgian IPA. Keeping their Western European character, its floral and spicy hop character is classically of the noble German varieties.

Its heavy handed malt balance provides a sweet taste that's slightly syrupy and carries a floral honey undercurrent. A modest tealike herbal component has delicate citrus, grass and a flowery bouquet.

As the malt begins to dissolve, its spicy middle palate is lightly acidic, winey and balanced with spicy bitterness. Rummy warmth is laced with apple, lemon, apricot, fig and oranges- all of the slightly under-ripened character.

Its onward trek toward closure turns the beer bitingly bitter and bracingly spicy. While its carbonation is tempered, buffed out by the ordinate residual sweetness that lingers on. Hedging on fusal taste, its numbing prickle is needed to slice through its honey liquor aftertaste and texture.

A: Poured from a bottle to a goblet. Had a copper color and a slightly hazy consistency. There was a small, foamy head that lasted a fair amount of time. Decent lacing.

S: A sharp aroma of fruit, yeast, and some spices.

T: Tasted of Belgian yeast, spices (pepper especially), light hops, and fruit (apples, pears). A surprisingly spicy and forceful flavor that somehow manages to be very tasty.

M: Lots of carbonation here, with a prickly finish. Medium-bodied.

O: A solidly done, very tasty beer. Definitely drinkable and likeable.

A: Pours a clear medium golden orange in color with light to moderate amounts of active visible carbonation slowly rising from the bottom of the glass and some light golden yellow highlights. The beer has a two finger tall foamy off-white head that reduces to a thick film covering the entire surface of the beer and a medium thick ring at the edges of the glass. Light to moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of biscuit and pale malts with slightly less than moderate aromas of slightly sweet light fruits (apple, pear, and peach), candi sugar sweetness, and slightly peppery yeast.

T: Upfront there is a moderate flavor of pale and biscuit malts with a moderate amount of light fruit flavors including apple, pear, and peach. There is a light to moderate amount of candi sugar contributing a moderate amount of sweetness. There is a light amount of spicy/peppery yeast and a light to moderate amount of earthy hops contributing a light amount of bitterness that fades slowly. Light hints of alcohol in the finish.

M: Slightly heavier than medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Light amounts of alcohol warming in the finish.

O: I really enjoy this beer, even though I have a semi-tired palate from Belgian beers (been drinking them for way too many years). Probably the best beer I have tried from this brewery in a long time. Alcohol could be hidden a little better but still a nice sipping beer.

Short 375 bottle.. greenish label picked up at Brewer's Haven in Boise last week... pours a hazy light orange... sheets of white lace coat the goblet.

Big balanced pepper phenols/light apple esters dominate the nose.

Flavor mirrors the aromas perfectly... no problems with any of this bottle... very well done tripel expectations.

Light/medium body with abundant carbonation...

Honestly.. this is the best Steenberge NV I have had in years... Perfectly clean and very drinkable.

Not as big and bold as I would have suspected, but still pretty darn good. Pours a deep, dark amber with high fluffy head, that dissipates down to an oily sheen. Rich aroma of dried fruits and brown sugar, dark malts. Taste is more of the raisin, prune, fig with some additional mild sugary sweetness. Overall weight is a bit lighter than I would expect, but still a good Belgian nonetheless.
