Liquor World is my haven in the town of Richmond where I go to school. They have a fairly nice selection of micros and imports. They offer many stone, rogue, SN, Goose island, Anchor, and a few other micros. There are also lots of german beers, and a few belgians and lambics. They keep at least a few 6 packs/bombers in the cooler, so you are always guaranteed to get something cold. The staff is fairly friendly, and can help answer any questions. They might not be the largest store, but in a party college town, they are the only people that realize that there are more than just macros.

The major drawback to this place when I visited was they did not sell singles. Being a tourist, a place gets huge points for that as buying six packs of everything I want to try tends to get expensive. The facility was big and rather impersonal (the staff was the latter as well). However, if there is something you want and don't mind a six pack this place may have it. Their selection was ok, but lacking in the high end craft beer department. Another good point is accessibility to the highway. I'm sure this place will suffice for locals, but I think next time I look into alternatives elsewhere.

Upon entering one is greeted by empty shelves, non working or partially dismantled display apparatus and unused counters which appear to have once been used for samples and maybe party snacks.
I generally don't care for or need a great deal of personal service when purchasing consumables but the checkout personnel have been friendly and accommodating.
It is the strict no single sales policy that drags this store down. They do not even provide the selection limited price inflated "mix-a-six" section that some grocery stores offer. I live ~25 miles from Liquor World but often drive another ~25 to Lexington in order to take advantage of Liquor Barn's great by the beer pricing.
Probably the best selection in Richmond but unfortunately that is not a tall order.
This store is bordered by four dry counties and easily accessible from a major north-south artery yet is unable to utilize all of it's available space. Better management could really make a difference here.

Highlights of last visit (April 8, 2010):
Sierra Nevada Porter, Stout
Bluegrass Brewing Pale Ale
Located less than a mile off of I-75, and Exit 85, Liquor World is perhaps the best craft beer retailer in the Richmond area. For Beer Advocates in transit through Richmond, it might be worth a stop.
This store is the largest liquor store in town. The building is a typical big-box that is situated just off on an access road and near the EKU campus. Pretty warehouse-like in it's design but they offer nearly anything to make any party a great party with fine assortments of liquers, wines, whiskys, beer, party supplies, bar supplies, and glassware. Homebrewers will enjoy a small selection of ingredients and supplies.
But enough of that, you are obviously interested in the beers. The selection ranges from the yellow stuff to craft beers including: Bluegrass Brewing, Alltech (Lexington Brewing), Abita, Anchor, Anderson Valley, Bell's, Brooklyn, Dogfish Head, Flying Dog, Harpoon, Goose Island, Great Lakes, Shiner, Schlafly, Stone, Thirsty Dog, Molson, Urquell, Carlsberg, Mooreland, Samuel Smith, Young's, Becks, Bitburger, Erdinger, Hacker-Pschorr, Hofbrau, Paulaner, Tucher, Warsteiner, Weihenstephaner, Grolsch, Heineken, Guiness, Smithwick's, Moretti, San Miguel, Carib, and more of the common imports that are found elsewhere.
The selection totals maybe 200 or so different beers with many kegs available. There are no coolers dedicated for beer so all beers are on the shelves.
Although the list of offerings is decent, they could do a better job of keeping beers fresh and in-date so buyer beware. The staff doesn't seem any more knowlegable than an the passing beer enthusiasts so don't expect much conversation about craft beers.
Unfortunately, this store does not allow single bottle sales. But if you are from out-of-state, you do get to take advantage of some of the lowest alcohol prices in the country, meaning the beer prices here are about as reasonable as anywhere in the States.
The lighting throughout is not that great and the beers get beaten down by the overuse of fluorescent lighting so I'd recommend grabing the beers that are not located on the edge of the shelves, rather reaching behind for the second six-pack of beers in line.
To get a better variety of beers, you will have to travel north about 20 minutes to one of Lexington's Liquor Barn stores.

Stopped in on the way to Chicago. Big store, warehouse like. I didn't receive any attention until I checked out, and this was on a Wednesday at 2 p.m. Very nice selection, however. Goose Island, everything Sierra Nevada, Great Lakes, Sam Smith, Pyramid, Left Hand, etc. The prices seemed about average, nothing special. This was the first store I stopped in outside Georgia so I was expecting the world. The store definitely had good selection, but compared to many other stores, it wasn't anything that special.
