This is probably the best bar in the Courthouse/Clarendon area. Good beer selection, good food selection, good vegetarian/vegan selection too. The only two things are that the place is too small and the service is slow. You have to go to the bar to get a drink, which is fine, but each person can take a while to order and the line won't move until they order. This is one of those places where you have to be prepared to chill and honestly, it is better for it.

I really enjoyed this place. Many different styles of beer on tap as well as cans and bottles. The staff is extremely friendly. This place is small, dark and at the time displyed awesome artwork from comic Ben Classen. The food is comforting, with different selections, most notably the tater tots. There is also an outdoor patio. I went on a Sunday when they had live music, this time featuring a local band and a band from Boston. Both were instrumental, rhythm section heavy, with psych, math, and post-hardcore elements.

V-Be warned, Galaxy Hut is small, dark, kinda scummy, and may contain offensive art on the walls. In other words, it is a rad place to hang out and drink beer. The place really is tiny, with just five bar stools and a few small tables, including some sit-down video games. There is a tv, but it is from 1991 or so and the color is terrible. Seriously, not even close to a flat screen or HD, which is fine by me. Rock'n'roll is playing on the stereo, but it sounds like shit, so I'm pretty sure the sound system was built when the bought the TV. I like this place.

Q-The tap list contains about 20 beers of decent quality; things like Dale's Pale. Quite a few local offerings, which is nice, but nothing is blowing me away. There are 10 options on the can/bottle list of average quality.

Ser-The bartender is friendly and subdued. Glassware is appropriate and the pours are done correctly. The bartender was more interested in talking punk rock with a customer than talking beer, but he knew his beer.

Sel-I guess a place this small can't offer 100 taps or anything, but Galaxy Hut could have done a better job of spreading out the styles on their tap list. It was almost all IPAs and other pales when I visited. An almost IPA-only list is OK guess, because the IPAs were decent, but I could have used a bit more variety.

F-Didn't try.

O-I really like the dive-bar feel of this place. I just wish they had a better spread of beers on tap and lower prices.

Galaxy Hut is a low-key, comfortable, small bar in the heart of Arlington, VA. It's a really nice get away from the too-oft uptight DC culture. The bar has a great selection of constantly-rotating craft beers on tap. They also have a small bottle selection.

The staff at Galaxy Hut are always super nice and chill, even when there is a long line of people waiting to order. My only complaint would be that there is no table service and usually only one bartender.

I would high recommend a order of tots to complement all the delicious craft beer!

Previous reviews are constant in describing Galaxy Hut as a "dive;" however, as one who has spent many a wonderful times in "dives," I would choose words like "homey," "comfortable," or "low key." In any case, this quaint litte spot - hey, "quaint" is another good word - is the antithesis of the usual DC area bar in that it lacks the obnoxious, self-important douchebag and the accompanying phonecow with her incessant, monosyllabic blathering. QH is a quiet place that attracts unpretentious beer lovers who seek a placw to have a pleasant chat, drink some decent beer and relaaaaxxx. Live music at night.

Yes, it is small: the size of an apartment living room with a few worn tables and a small L-shape bar that seats about 12 on bolted bar stools. (ala Brickskellar.) The pale blue walls are adorned with the work of local artists. They have about 20 taps with beer priced by the size of the glass you order: ie, pint or goblet. The server was excellent and attentive. The food is your basic pub grub and must be ordered at the bar benaeth the sign. Somewaht like a British pub. That said, they offer tater tots, a comfort food that everyone loves - much like puppies.

I agree this place is a hole in the wall, but it's definitely worth the change of pace for Arlington.

Once you walk through the door you realize this place is centered around the beer and that is it. Yes there is food and live music occasionally but the real purpose everyone is there is for a different brew off the beaten path. The crowd is a bit younger than you normally find in the area and the place does have some character. The service is fair and as long as you know what you want and it's not a weekend or peak time there isnt a problem getting served.

The taplist has a good mix of styles and always has a few unique drafts. The other nice change of pace is that the local DMV breweries are well represented.

Overall this is one of my favorite places for happy hours and enjoying a beer on a day off.

Visited during DC conference/beer sojourn November 2011 with jmichaelsen, thanks John.

Located in a slightly iffy part of Arlington with parking at a real premium. This is certainly a hole in the wall dive bar of the first degree. There's nothing remotely inviting about the place other than the really good tap list. We decided to sit at the bar, since John assured me this was the only way we were going to get any service, unless we answered the call of The Finger, which was humorous for those sitting at tables expecting a waitress to magically appear and take their order (not going to happen).

Dive pub grub food, we had the 'famous' tater tots with chili and cheese, and they were truly hideous, though added to the dive bar allure. The taplist was the key, we had several beers (Sculpin on tap!) but as expected first degree wallet burns ensued. I've gotten use to the sticker shock of DC beer scene, but you've got to pay the preacher for good brews here.

All in all a fine example of a dive bar, though it pails in comparison with the glorious The Big Hunt. I don't understand why BAs rate that place so low, it isn't Churchkey and isn't trying to be, just as this place isn't trying to be Rustica Balston. That diatribe aside, if my arm was twisted I'd come back here again, the service was attentive enough, nice selection of quality beers, the finger at the bar was unique, but won't ever be ordering those tots again, lol.

Galaxy hut has a rotating selection of great drafts and bottles that makes it a "must stop" location in the Clarendon/Courthouse neighborhood of NoVA. Since beer is the main driving force of such a place, and the staff and owners adhere to that, I love this place.

Only gripes are the ordering process, which is simply a line with one register, and the lack of seating. There is an alleyway with a few extra seats but it usually smokey and a bit too claustrophobic for me. There used to be a "larger" (used relatively) space for seating out back, but that seems to have been closed off recently.

All in all, a great place to stop for some great craft beer.

This is a neat pub near my place in Arlington, VA. Getting a seat at the bar can be difficult here, it's quite small, and dark inside, felt more like a underground prohibition era den. Good selection of brews, regularly changing, the bottle stuff is pretty standard with a few gems, all nitro keg on tap, but a reasonably good unusual selection. Staff were good, but not engaging. You have to buy your beer up front from the bar as they don't have servers there. Meaning it was as if you were in a fast food joint, you'd have to wait in line to buy beer from the bartender with cashier machine up front. Prices are ok, and a good Arlington bar for the type. Tater tots seem to be the highlight here along with the pac man machine from the 80s.

Stopped by for the first time the other night.

The Galaxy Hut is a small, divish sort of beer bar, located in amongst a number of stores, cafes and restaurants in Arlington. As one walks in there is a modest size bar in the back (holdling roughly 10 patrons I would guess), and then maybe an additional 8 or 9 rickety tables and chairs in what passes for a dining area. The atmosphere and vibe are very informal and low key, and this seems like a pretty nice place to relax with a beer or three.

Seems to me there was something like 18 or 20 tap handles of craft beer and imports (no crap on tap here I'm happy to say), with a similar number of bottled beers listed on the other side of the draft menu/list. Quality was very high I thought, with a number of beers on tap from Bells, New Holland, Bruery, etc. The highlight the day I was here was the Firestone Walker 14 on draft, which was selling for $9 a 12 ounce snifter (welcome to DC area pricing).

Service was OK I guess. There isn't any table service for drinks here, so customers have to walk up to the bar (under the arrow) to order and receive their drinks from the bartender. While the bartender was very pleasant, unless you were actually sitting at the bar, I'm not sure why anyone would give this place more than an average score for service.

As for food, I didn't get any. The group I was with ordered some tater tots, which looked to be on the greasy side, but I'm sure were probably OK otherwise. I think the menu otherwise consists of fairly typical pub grub, which I'll have to wait for another day to sample.

As for pricing, the GH is located pretty close to DC, and so I was not surprised by the pricing here. Most pints were in the $6 to $7 range, which I think is pretty typical for the area. One thing that's nice is that you can order most beers in a 12 ounce glass if you prefer, generally for a dollar or two less than the pint price.

Overall, I thought this a pretty cool little beer bar with an above average beer selection. Not sure I'd go out of my way to visit (unless they have something comparable to FW 14 on tap again), but if I was in the area and in the mood for a beer, this is definitely a place I'd keep in mind.

4.5 on the (dive) atmosphere if (like me) you dig the following:
- Pac Man for tables and perforated PBR cans for candles
- Often has local live indie/rock music
- great punky cartoon artwork by a local DC artist everywhere
- Tiny, intimate space, with a small backyard area

Very veg friendly bar fare. Awesome maybe 20 frequently rotating taps and a reliable stash of ~30 bottles. They used to do this great "Floragash" blend of 1 part Floris Apple and 2 parts Allagash White (kind of similar to the the apple wit from Unibroue). But regular stock of all sorts of belgian styles, hop bombs, RISs, and everything down to sessions.

A real gem in Clarendon.

Without a doubt the best place for beer geeks in NoVa. The prices are great, the selection is better, and the atmosphere lends to the enjoyment of your beer. The beer menu is a mile long and almost none of it is your run-of-the-mill bar selections. It seems like every time I go there, there is always something new to try.

My only gripes are (1) there is not enough seating, which makes it irritating if you arrive on a Friday anytime after 7 (b) the line to get a beer can get quite long (although its easier than trying to get a waiter's attention at a normal joint and its very orderly) and (c) while many of the tables are unique (old pac man games), there isn't a lot of leg room at them. The longer tables are typically left for larger parties, so if it's just you and a few friends, make the best of a somewhat uncomfortable situation. But, you will always have an incredible beer to help you along.

I'd say this is THE place for beer lovers in Arlington. Lots of taps and lots of bottles, there's definitely something for everyone here. Actually the selection is almost too big, it can be hard to choose from all the great beer. But it's good to have the choice.

It is an interesting little dive place. If it's not crowded then it is great for getting together with friends, having good beer and good conversation. The service is good, the staff is friendly. The line at the bar for drinks is interesting, orderly if nothing else.

The food, well, I wouldn't come here just for the food, but it is still good. Typical bar food; I expected nothing more. The good thing is they have a vegetarian/vegan option of almost everything on the menu, which is great for my girlfriend and me.

Overall a great bar, I was sold the first time I came. I try to make it a regular stop every week to try something new.

My friends and I visit the hut whenever we're in town. The draw for me is their fantastic beer selection, with some drafts that I've never seen before. Dogfish Head is usually on tap, along with Delerium, Allagash, Stone, and others that I frankly forget. Whenever we're there we have to check the new list to see what's on tap, which is a really good thing. Seating can be a problem, especially if you come during the bar rush around 9 or 10. I highly recommend grabbing a seat in the Silo, the round grain silo at the end of the patio; if that's not possible, you can head out of the smoke by standing or sitting in the patio.

The crowd is pretty local, with a lot of native Arlingtonians coming regularly for beer and shows. In the last few years it's been getting more popular, and recently I had a guy from Silver Spring, MD ask for directions because he heard it was a great spot to hang at. It's still a really friendly space, which makes it perfect to catch back up with my friends in Arlington.

Getting to it is really easy; I recommend taking the Orange line to Clarendon to avoid having to part on the streets nearby.

If you're in the area, grab a beer, talk with the people, and relax for a few hours.

I lived in NoVA for 2 years, and rarely found a reason to go out anywhere else besides the Hut. It's just one of those unique places that makes you feel like you are welcome and belong no matter who you are - in the number of times I was patronizing the place I saw hipsters, townies, groups of business people, bro dudes, and plain old normal people sitting in close proximity to one another and enjoying themselves. My fiancee and I seemed to quickly gain regular status, and would be greeted warmly by the bartenders that we saw frequently. The draft selection was spectacular and rotated frequently. There were some standards that seemed to always be there but sometimes you'd go in and get a rare steal on, say, a pitcher of Dogfish Head Palo Santo (who serves this stuff in a pitcher?!) and get everybody drunk for $25. There were a solid contingent of bottles and cans that fleshed out the selection, so PBR-swigging cheapskates could drink happily alongside Belgian-sipping beer geeks.

While good service and quality beer are good starts, it was probably the food that kept us coming back. The sentence I used most frequently when describing the Hut was "they really know how to work a freakin' deep fryer," and I truly meant it. But alongside fries, onion rings, corn dogs, and tater tots, the rest of the menu never disappointed. Veggie chili dogs and seitan cheesesteaks can be found right alongside carnivore fare like pulled BBQ and burgers - and don't get me started on their nachos, which destroyed nearly every other nacho plate I've ever been served.

So you've got good bartenders, good beer, good food - what about the place? It's probably fair to call it something of a hipster dive, but with a lot of heart. Funny illustrative paintings and comics from a local artist lined the walls, including the well-loved "bear and bunny talking at table with interchangeable word boards". There is a tiny, muted TV over the bar that either plays a local sports event or Turner Movie Classics. It's dim, fairly smoky at times, and kinda small - so you can find yourself without a table when it's busy. I always liked going a bit earlier than true "bar time", which made it much easier to grab a table with friends and eat some dinner. The outside seating is in a narrow alley between two buildings, but the back of the alley features the awesome metal hut with padded seating that can easily fit a group of 6 or so - good luck snagging it!

So yeah, I love the Hut. I miss the Hut. I will go back to the Hut immediately the next time I go back to Arlington, most likely BEFORE I even arrive at my intended destination (note: I have done this in the past). If you live in NoVA and need a place to be a regular at, I can't think of a better place to choose.

A short walk from the Clarendon Metro station that takes you past several restaurants, the Galaxy Hut is a refreshing hole in the wall hang out that has a great beer selection and a unique local flare. Smokey, small and crowded w/locals the Galaxy is a friendly place in an otherwise distant/stand offish town. Never mind that the owner is originally from NJ, and there's a classic portrait of Asbury's Tilly on the patio wall, this place definitely has a character that's all its own. From the funky DJ mix to the comic-like art that adorns the walls, you know as soon as you've entered that you've found an urban sanctuary for the off beet beer advocate.

On tap; Delirium Tremins, Unibroue's Maudite, Caracole Saxo, St. Bernardis, BBC Jefferson Reserve Bourbon Stout, New Holland Golden Cap Saison, Rogue's Cap'n Sig's Northwest Red, Green Flash IPA, Blue Mountain Full Nelson IPA, Anderson Valley Summer Solstice, Bear Republic's Hop Rod Rye, Founder's Cerise Cherry, Boulder's Mojo IPA, Troegs Hop Back Amber, Bell's Oberon Wheat, Legend Brown Ale, Lagunitas Pilsner, Tetley's Pub Ale and Blue Point's Toasted Lager round out the 20 or so taps. There's also a less impressive bottle and can selection that includes Chimay White, Gordon, Guinness, Westmalle, Corsendonk, Dale's Pale Ale and several others.

This was my second visit to the Galaxy, and both times I spent several hours just hanging out drinking good beer and bullshitting with the locals. It will definitely be a place that I return to often.

Stopped by Galaxy Hut last Friday the 6th. Came here randomly with a friend seeking a good craft brew in Arlington. As we're waiting in line at the bar, I notice something peculiar. Yes, it is! Bell's Hopslam on draft! As someone who patiently awaits the arrival of this liquid gold of a beer every January, I was enthralled, especially since I've never before had the wonderful opportunity to experience it on draft.

Hands down the best Double IPA I've had on draft, and I've had Pliny the Elder once and my memory of that just did not live up to the fresh Hopslam that I was indulging in. Pints of it were 7, which due to the relative lack of availability, seemed pretty reasonable.

Generally, this place is a great alternative from the pretentious atmosphere that pervades most of the other places in Arlington and in the D.C. area in general. It has a somewhat divey, rugged, alternative character to it that is worth seeking out if that's your fancy, which I certainly found comfort in.

They usually have something from Left Hand, Rogue, Allagash, and Stone on tap and the frequency of their tap rotation seems appropriate enough. It's comes enthusiastically recommended.

I've been here twice now. Galaxy Hut is located in the Clarendon neighborhood of Arlington, which is pretty much the most unique and best neighborhood to go out in the area. The place is small. A lot of tables and moderately loud music playing. I wouldn't call this a "mainstream" bar....which is good. There's about 20 or 25 taps here with all excellent brews. Top microbrews from Stone, Left Hand, Bluegrass, etc. Usually about 5 or 6 bucks for a pint. Which, for this area and the quality of beer you're getting, is pretty reasonable. Overall, Galaxy Hut is a pretty impressive place. Somewhat of a dive bar...but I'd recommend bringing your friends here.

visited after a day of interviewing, in search of a good beer

atmosphere: spent about 5 minutes looking through the large glass storefront contemplating whether to commit or move on, shared a couple awkward laughs with a couple who thought I was staring at them, unassuming from the outside, unique little place on the inside, quirky art on the walls, good music playing, dim lighting scheme with Famosa lager can-dles on the tables, single blood-red light in the closet-sized bathroom, small bar, chill crowd, smoking but not too smoky, room for about 50 people inside, a covered patio built into the corridor between this and the neighboring building with 5 tables and an interestingly situated round table, a section of the bar is reserved for those lining up for drinks, eliminating the annoying but all-too-common hassle of having to yell or reach around somebody

quality: everything seemed fine and fresh(ish), served in chilled pints

service: in my limited experience the service was standard...quick given the crowd but nothing above what you'd expect

selection: Shared both a pitcher of Bear Republic Racer 5 and Bells Oberon. Around 12 taps, most all of which I'd be more than happy to drink along with some mediocre names. Other selections included Victory Golden Monkey and Allagash White...there were better ones but I can't recall specifics. About 20 bottles, some quite good, some pseudo-macros. The "current" list on the website doesn't seem to be up-to-date.

not bad, $5+ for most pints, pitchers around $18 or so...

I've started going here since Dr. Dremo's closed, and I really enjoy it. It's different than Dremo's but I kind of like it better.

I think they have about 10 taps with maybe 3-4 of them changing week to week. I've had a few great brews that I would not have known about.

Besides the beer, my favorite part of it is the old arcade games masquerading as tables. They have Ms. Pac Man, a pinball machine, and my favorite Galaga! (the Galaga machine also has Space Invaders on it).

Sometimes the clientel can be a bit "hipster" for me, but I don't mind too much as I used to be one of them. :P Also, it's very small so when there are about 30 people there, it can get crowded. But it never gets hot like it can in other crowded bars, and as far as I can tell, everyone is very nice; polite and patient when the line at the bar gets long.

They also have live music on the weekends. I've only heard two bands there. One I liked, one I didn't.

Larry the owner and bartender is a really cool guy. Very friendly and knowlegeable. I envy him being so young and owning a business like that.

Overall, definitely worth going.

Galaxy Hut has been around a little while now. Enough time for several different "eras" of patronage, from hip to ho-hum. The overall atmosphere however has not changed - mostly the neighborhood surrounding it has changed. It is one of the last good hole-in-the-wall neighborhood bars in Clarendon that doesn't pander to some generic demographic. The lighting is dim, and the only real drawback is that it can get too smokey too fast, and the place smells like the deep-fryer oil in the kitchen. There are 15 taps - alot of them are static, but the owner is open and eager to switch it up with a few seasonals or limited run beers when available. The bottle selection is pretty decent too, considering the small size of the place. One of my favorite things about this bar is that they pretty much always stay open until the legal last call of 1:30AM in Virginia, which is a godsend when you suddenly and unexpectadly find yourself in need of a beer at 1:25 in the morning - "The Hut" is there for you. Don't expect a mainstream, upscale or fancy vibe there, because despite what is happening to the neighborhood and its residents, you can still find real human beings in there (and sometimes the transplants wander in too - I always shy away on weekends). They have bands/ karaoke/ movie night and cover charges alot, but early evenings and late nights are always a safe bet. Tuesday night seems best for me. No band, no cover, no robots or robo-cops.
