Pours a jet black color with tan shades when held to the light. A very thin white head is created but dissipates within seconds of pouring out.
Smell does not have much going on. A bit of a strong chocolate smell, but nothing else to the nose.
Taste is okay. Some fresh cocoa in this porter, but much like the nose, there is not much to the taste besides that.
Mouthfeel is nice. The best part of this beer. Smooth with a nice medium thickness.
Drinkability is not the worst. I could drink a good amount of these but not special enough to keep drinking. Not terrible, but not great either.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a Central Waters shaker pint.

Bottle glass brown liquid, very dark but still clear, topped by a thin smattering of khaki foam. Light sandy lacing; average retention.

Cocoa and coffee in the nose.

Faintly sour palate entry with roast barley and a touch of specialty malt as well. Mild clean bitterness from hops and a touch of chocolate and loam in the finish.

Relatively light-bodied and perhaps a little thin and lacking carbonation, but not terribly so.

Unexceptional but perfectly drinkable porter, free of off notes.

OK good. I'm not the only one who didn't think much of this beer. It's certainly not bad, but I've had darker brown ales than this porter. There's a thin toffee and caramel flavor that finishes with a hint of roast malt and watery bitter coffee finish. The beer isnt even close to black, it's a clear reddish-brown. I've had worse dark session beers, but don't call this a porter.

Poured the lightest shade of amber I have ever seen for a porter, just a hair darker than Gray's Amber ale.

The smell has the typical gray's musty basementy yeast smell along with a bit of a sweet malt odor.

The flavor is thin with a touch of chocolate and a bit of a sour yeast flavor, unpleasant and unporter like.

The mouthfeel is thin and watery.

Another failed attempt by Gray's, not a porter by any stretch.

Poured chilled into a standard pint glass and consumed between 45º and 55º.

A=Brown, but with grayish tint; foam was short and was gone within a minute.

S=Hint of roasted malt.

T=Too much like a stout for my liking; bitter, tangy.

M=Nice, better than some.

D=Very hard at first due to harsh taste; second half was a bit more drinkable.

Poured from the bottle into a Surly pint glass. Nice dark color, small head recedes quickly, no lacing to speak of. No real scent, bad sign. Taste is nothing special, no significant flavors. Super watery mouthfeel, very thin.

Would not buy again, if offered I would probably see what else was there, and I love porters in general.

Pours out really thin and not very dark. Looks like a watery cup of coffee. Amlost no bubbles and no lacing.
Charred malts hit the nose first then some yeast burn and slight hop. Chocolate and coffee but faint, very faing.
Taste is watered down malts followed by caramel and coffee.Very little raisin bread here.
Mouthfeel is way too clean for a porter.
Overall, it's not a bad taste , just a weak taste. All of the flavors are here, just not as much of them as I would like.

Poured into a pint glass that I got from New Glarus Brewing.

A - Dark Brown with no light showing through, the head was almost nonexistent and receded almost instantly

S - Strongly of malt, chocolate and some coffee.

T- The maltiness comes off too strong, or perhaps thats just the coffee. It's more bitter than I would have liked for a porter, and the lasting taste is somewhat unpleasant. It's like drinking a bad cup of coffee.

M - Feels about average, nothing special.

D - The harshness of this beer is a major downside to its overall drinkability. I want to like this, because I love porters, but it just doesn't pass muster. If anything, this is an immature porter that they need to tweak more to get it to top quality.

I got this beer as part of a mixed eight pack from grays. I got it from The Lager Mill for $10.99. So far I have enjoyed all the beers in this eight pack so lets see how this one stacks up. There might be a bottling date, but I can't decode it. Poured from a 12oz brown bottle into a pint glass.

A- The label is a picture of Fred the bulldog standing in front of an old wooden barn, it looks ok. This beer poured a very dark brown, borderline black. It had two and a half fingers worth of tan foam that died down to a thin layer that stayed till the end.

S- I pick up large amounts of roasted caramel malts. It smells semi sweet, and I pick up some chocolate, coffee, and caramel. Smells like a low alcohol stout.

T- This beer tastes pretty similar to the aroma. The roasted caramel malts are there in full force and impart lots of good chocolate and caramel flavors. This beer is a little sweet and has a slightly bitter finish that really works with this brew. The flavor is pretty robust and roasty, it tastes pretty similar to a low alcohol stout.

M- Medium light bodied with good carbonation.

Overall this was a good porter. This brew had all the flavors you would expect from a porter, but amped up more. This beer blurs the line between stouts and porters. Out of the 4 beers in the eight pack this one was my favorite. I would recommend this to people who enjoy stouts and porters.

Pours a clear dark amber. 1/4 inch head of a pale tan color. Slight retention and slight lacing. Smells of sweet malt, slight biscuit, slight hops, and some lager cleanliness. Odd, so far no roasted malt characteristics. I don't believe this fits the style of an American Porter. Mouth feel is smooth and crisp with an average carbonation level. Tastes of slight roasted malt, hops background, some sweet malt in the finish. Fairly smooth finish, but not strong in body by any means. An almost watery feel for a Porter. Overall, not a real good example of a Porter, but also oddly not a bad beer, just not what I would consider a Porter.

Thanks Rob for the sample.

Poured dark brown with a foamy head that disappeared very quickly. Smell was dark malt, chocolaty. Taste was more of the same although too sweet, and the body was medium to light with low carbonation, giving the beer a taste that was somewhere in the neighborhood of Ovaltine.

This beer pours a clear amber-brown color. The head is a half inch in height, and recedes quickly into decent lacing. The aroma is nutty with roasted malt and chocolate. It smells a lot more like a Dark Mild than a porter. The taste is much the same as the aroma. It is pleasant, but very different than what I would expect from a porter. The mouthfeel is on the lighter side of medium bodied with lively carbonation. Overall, this is a decent beer, but it surely isn't a porter. I'm not really sure what it is either. Although I am having no problem drinking it I don't think I will try this again.

Poured a clear mahogany, slim head.

Smells malty mainly. A bit weak.

Taste is malty, with hints of roastedness, sweetness, and cola. Interesting and sort of nice. Doesn't really feel like a porter though, more like a brown ale to me.

Mouthfeel thin, carbonation flat.

The taste on this was fine but simple, and mouthfeel was weak. As a porter, this falls short, but overall this was passable.

Given to me by my brother. I believe it was a part of a mix 12 pack he had purchased at Costso.
Pretty tame aroma. Little sweetness (like a cookie) and mild roast and toast. Also, holds a little base dark malt holding steady.
Head is gone before I could sit down with it, walking about 20 feet. Black with red edges and seems quite clear.
Rather light in body and same with flavor. Has the aspects one would look for in taste, but lacks any sense of boldness, maybe even presence. Very light body, not much above a typical Am. light lager. Adequate carbonation.
Seems kinda' like porter-light, or maybe porter-like. Nothing distasteful, but also nothing to get excited about.
Ten years ago this brewery made a couple of pretty darn good beers. Not sure this is the same brewery as that one.

A- Red-cocoa with a thin off white head. Retains at a slick. Minimal lacing.
S- Pleasant milk chocolate and toffee aromas. A bit of cherry as well.
T- Not as well rounded as the nose. It has some general moderately toasted malts, but there is minimal dark roasted flavors. A bit of fruit.
M- Light body and too aggressive of carb.
O- This beer was kind of mediocre for me. The nose is nice, but it needs to have a bit more roasted flavor for it to be better. I'm kind of disappointed.

I bought a 8-pack Gray's Sampler from Woodman's in Janesville, WI in Spring 2011 for $10.39.

Pours a very dark brown color with a very thin head that disolves quickly. Has scents of roasted malts, with some toffee/coffee hints. Taste is thin with flavors of coffee, roasted malts, caramel. Texture is rather light and thin as this beer drinks much too quickly than it should. Got to love this beer since it's made in my hometown and supports local jobs, but as far as American Porters on BA, this is an average beer.
