First had: on tap at Legend

Cloudy golden pour with a small white head. Light aroma of wheat and banana esters. Tame, standard version of the style, toasted grains, notes of banana and clove, bubblegum, tiny herbal hop notes, slightly metallic finish. Light body, thin, drinkability detracted by general flavorlessness. Nothing really memorable here.

A day to drink quaffable style beers as I started around 1:00PM and the fireworks have not even started.Poured into a weizen glass a clouded light peach color with a decent sized rocky white head atop.Alot of banana and toasted malt in the nose, light lemon lingers.Flavors are banana-clove heavy with light toasted what malt underneath,I like the heavier creamy feel to the beer. It's a good warmer weather beer, very good for today.

This beer is not bad, but not very German like. More like blue moon. It is a filtered beer and a bit thin for my taste. It does not give a good mouthfeel. It has almost no head and no lacing on the glass. The taste is decent with a reasonable amount of clove and the smell is okay. As typical of American hefeweizen, it does not match up to the German ones.

12 oz bottle poured into pint glass

A: Poured a light golden orange color, good and cloudy. One fingers worth of soapy white head that settles to a nice ring. Good lacing from start to finish.

S: Banana and clove right up front, with a touch of orange peel.

T: Follows the smell... More banana than most hefs I've had of late... mid palette is very yeasty and spicy with a touch a citrus. Finish is smooth and mild..

M: Mouthfeel is pretty light, but the smoothness of the brew makes this a little on the creamy side.. Good mix.

D: Very drinkable brew.... Good ABV and taste would make this a pretty good session beer.

A: hazy, lazy orangy-gold. a massive plume of dense white has reasonable retention and some nice lacing.

S: black pepper, a serious clove, and nutmeg. some kind of wheat and munichy mix. floral in the finish.

T: the nutmeg and clove are prominent on the palate. a grainy wheatiness comes on to cloy onto the palate after the spice. a nip of alcohol.

M: a big time wheat body with an effervescent like carbonation.

D: great example of a german hefe from central va. very enjoyable beer.

A: Cloudy (unfiltered), orange-peach color, with about nice finger or so head. I poured... waited...swirled... then poured the rest, getting a massive amount of suds from the bottom. Nice!

S: Strong, fresh, smell of coriander, banana and clove. Phenol and esthers and then some!

T: Very muted, soft, and yeasty on the spice content. Fruity and bubblegum-like, with a tinge of candy sugar.

M: Not watery in any way, but still understated nevertheless. The carbonation was prickly, yet not too high, and the lacing was moderate... at best.

O: I've become somewhat of a fan of Legend. You can call me a homer if you want, but in my limited experience with them, I have yet to taste a bad brew from them.

Hazed yellow with a brown tint from the yeast. Diddn't get much head, but improper glassware will do that to ya. Nose is jam packed with clove. A good bit of banana and yeast as well. Taste is clove and banana again, but not as strong as the nose. Still quite tasty though. Medium body. Good carbonation and a good creaminess - super smooth. A very solid hefe.

Nice slightly hazy golden coloured body with a very large white head. Tons of bubbles rise from the bottom - and a very nice unfiltered look to this one! Aroma of fresh wheat, yeast, lemons, bananas, coriander seed and some spice. Medium-bodied; Spicey flavour up front with some good wheat and yeast characteristics following soon behind. Aftertaste shows more of the wheat, some coriander seed and a very pleasant banana sweetness. Overall, a good beer - a nice wheat to have in the summertime and one to definitely sample if you can find it in or around Virginia.

Reviewed from notes.

Poured into a weizen glass. Color is a really cloudy yellow color with a nice white head. The nose rally brings out a lot of classic hefeweizen character with some nice banana, clove, and bubblegum. The taste isn't quite as yeast-forward and has a bit of wheat. Nice creamy light body on a beer that drinks quite well.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into my Dogfish shaped glass. It poured a very hazy, pale straw color with a nice thick pillowy white head filling the top inch of the glass. Nice head retention and lacing on the glass as I drank it as well.

The aroma has the classic clove like yeasty spiciness to it with a little banana coming through. A bit of sweet, bready, wheat flavor comes through as well.

The taste shows a lot of the wheat character to it with a nice refreshing citrus zest to it. The banana and clove play more of a supporting background role in this one. So many American versions in this style it's the opposite and the clove spice seems to dominate. I really appreciated this one in that respect.

The mouthfeel is light and the carbonation is a little above moderate. Drinkability is very good, it's great tasting and an excellent version of the style. The citrus zest and the wheat made it a very refreshing beer overall. I really liked how the clove spice seemed to be relatively mild in it overall.

I visited Germany for the first time in May. I fell in love with the unfiltered goodness of Hefeweizen. It seems that every restaurant in Weisbaden brewed their own variation. After my return to the states, the search ensued for an American Brewery who could replicate the glorious beer I drank in the Fatherland. After a few "yeah, that was a good beer...but not quite it," I bought a 22 ounce bottle of Legend's Hefeweizen. I live in Richmond, VA, so I am very proud to say this local company nailed it.

From the appearance, smell, and taste, to it's smoothness, it was exactly what I was searching for. I've since bought many a six pack, and have yet to be let down. If you're looking for the real deal, this is the closest I've tasted this side of the Atlantic.

A: There is a thin layer of yeast visible on the bottom of the bottle, medium straw in color, thick bubbled head that dissipates quickly leaving a ring around the edge of the glass - 3.00, S: Very typical nose for a hefeweizen though somewhat mild - noticeable banana and clove as well as a chalky yeast aroma, there is also a good deal of what reminds me of lemon frosting which provides a subtle sweetness - 3.50, T: Flavor has a degree of tartness and with a dry grain bite, mildly sweet and with a solid dose of citrus - lemon to be more specific, a decent flavor profile - 3.75, M: Medium bodied and with the slightest bit of grittiness - 4.00, D: Entirely drinkable beer, good representation of the style - 4.00

Pours a super hazy dark gold/light amber with one finger of white foam with decent retention and lacing. Sweet wheaty aromas, with yeasty notes, a bit of bananas, and a distant whiff of spices. The taste is quite balanced between a gently sweet wheatiness and a light lemon peel hop. The simple, straightforward flavors are enhanced by a nice, medium body that softly tingles before slowly smoothing out. Well made, not objectionable in the least. A solid choice.

The last of my Legend triad, straight from The Cheese Shop.

A: The weizenbier is hazy, a golden straw color in my glass. The pour generated three fingers of head that nearly overflowed out of the glass. That head receded quickly though, leaving little behind.

S: Lots of clove wafting out of the glass, a reminder of the subtle beauty of a good hefeweizen. It's nice to see Legend nail the aroma, with splashes of wheat following the clove.

T: This beer restores my faith in Legend. The weizen flavors are crisp and full, lots of clove and banana. The esters don't crowd out the wheat, which has just enough tartness to be noticeable. The flavors, sweet and spry, are perfect for a warm day at the beach. Or, in this case, naptime in our townhouse at the beach. A very enjoyable hefeweizen from the crew at Legend.

M: The mouthfeel is aided by a low carbonation, allowing the banana and wheat to linger. I really enjoy how the flavors roll around.

D: A good hefeweizen, no doubt about it. A little dry and very flavorful, this weizen hit the spot.

Pours a hazy and cloudy orange with a small foam that has a decent retention.

Yeast, clove, banana, etc. Typical hefe profile here.

Taste is yeasty, somewhat spicy, big on the banana profile here. Toned down on the citrus zest on this wheat, but thats alright. Enjoyable.

Mouthfeel is light, creamy. Very drinkable.

Dull hazy golden color.

Aromas of cloves banana and bubblegum.

These aromas continue on the pallet with an underpinning of a tart citrus note.

Medium body with the carbonation carrying the tart quenching character through on the finish.

Pretty good drink after my day's work in the middle of June.

Poured from 22oz brown bomber into a clear weizen glass. No freshness date. Purchased at Harris Teeter (Charlottesville, VA) for $4.49.

A: Hazy pale yellow with 2-finger off-white head with good retention and spare lacing.

S: Aroma is like lemon Pine-sol with a little clove. No nice fruity esters -- all citrus solvent

T: Terrible. Solvent flavors with lemon citrus and yeast flavors. No banana or clove to speak of.

M: Thin with little body or creaminess. Solvent aftertaste.

D: Makes me wonder if it was infected or bad, but it did retain some semblance of a hefe. I would hesitate to pay this price tag if there's a chance it would taste like this again.

a: standard pint, yeast roused from the bottom before pouring, fizzy white head shows light and eventually no retention atop a golden amber beer made opaque by a thick shroud of suspended yeast

s: yeasty overripe banana and clove over a wheat body that is pretty benign for the most part, hops mild, standard stuff

m: lighter bodied with a low-moderate carbonation that's just a little abrasive for the style at first and eventually dies down to flat soda levels, really makes for a dull experience on the palate

t: boring wheat malt body with the only defining characteristics courtesy of the hefe yeast - mild clove and banana pudding mix, nothing off here but this hefe totally plays it safe and ends with a disappointingly abrupt and watery finish, glimpses of herbal grasses and a mild bitterness close things up

d: light and easy enough, but not worth a repeat purchase

bomber from The Caboose, Ashland, VA...I really wanna like Legend more - but my current perception is that they make only a few beers worth a repeat while many either have issues or suffer from a lack of inspiration

A - Golden in color with a decent head that fades slowly but leaves some lacing behind.

S - Banana. Lots of it. Clove. Decent balance in the nose between fruit and spice.

T - More banana. Fruit gives way to drying finish that's yeasty, spicy and smooth. Not as citrus-y on the end which I rather liked.

M - I love the mouthfeel. Lighter bodied but full on taste with a smooth finish. Almost creamy in a way.

D - Certainly sessionable. Would probably want another. Give it a shot if you have the chance.

Poured from a 22 oz bottle into a weizen glass. 09/13/08.

Pours a bright golden-straw yellow color with about two fingers of bubbly white head. The head dropped quickly leaving no lacing. Strong spicy aroma with lots of clove, bubblegum, and banana.

Taste is similar to the aroma but better. Good wheat taste, pepper and clove, bubblegum, banana. A bit of light citrus as well. Not too sweet at all. This is one of the best tasting hefeweizens I've ever had. A very nice mix of flavors.

Feel is light-medium body and well-carbonated. Very clean, crisp, and refreshing. Drinkability is great. It's not heavy at all and it goes down so smoothly. A few of these would be great on a hot day.

Overall a pretty good hefeweizen. One of the best I've had.

One of the better hefeweizens I've had this year. Pours the usual cloudy, straw color with a big, bubbly white head. Average head retention. Good lacing.

Good strong aroma. Cloves banana, bubble gum....the whole 9 yards.

Same for the taste. Strong, crisp, pronounced, Astringent, little wheat bitterness, bubble gum, pepper, and cloves.

Mouthfeel is about average. Crisp but a little thin. Drinkability is excellent. This would be a warm weather treat either as a session beer or a one beer thirst quencher.

If you like bland hefes like Widmers, you won't appreciate this. If you like strong flavors in a hefe...this is a good domestic take on the style.

Bomber into an Aventinus glass.

Appearance: Nice slightly golden hazy yellow, lots of surging carbonation toward the top long after the initial pour, and pads of lacing sans sheets around the bulbous top.

Smell: Yeast, doughiness, lemon, sour cherries, mango and tropical fruit. Not typical sans cloves and banana, but the esters and yeast aromas are there, with the wheat, and I like the different take.

Taste: Much carrying over from the aroma, yeast and fresh dough, fruit esters, a bit of citrus hops, fruity finish. Not as sweet as some seem to be, which I also like.

Mouthfeel: Lighter to medium bodied, maybe more spritzy than other versions of the style, even domestics.

Drinkability: Differently solid, and also not as sweet as other styles, which I said before, and that may turn some folks off as far as wanting to try this. Yes, it's different, yet it remains a balanced take on the style.

Smells slightly spicy, put also nicely fruity and yeasty.

Taste follows the smell. A curious (but tasty)blend of spiciness that is not limited to just coriander. Nice fruit flavors, that do not seem limited to just bannana to me. I notice citrus and maybe even some notes of cherry Good wheat backbone and bite. Well-carbonated, somewhat thin bodied.

Drinkable heffe, good beer.
