Legend Brewing, in Richmond, Va., is a well established brewery and brew pub that has, over the years, made a lot of mediocre beer and, from time to time, some really really good ones. The good ones predominate these days as the brewers have become more sophisticated and better at producing creative examples of classic styles.
Strong Arm Ale is a wonderful exampke of a Scotch Ale (aka "Wee Heavy"). In the tradition of ales from Scotland, this one is rich in malts, imcluding some roasted malts, and fitted out with just enough bittering hops to keephe sweet malt from cloying. That is the Scottish ale style, and with the "Scotch" variety, that means raised to a cellarable abv level and a richness that needs to be warmed a bit and sipped thoughtfully to be properly appreciated.
I first experienced this beer on draft at Legend, on their wonderful outdoor deck overlooking the James River and the Rich ond skyline. However, this review is being composed over a 22oz "bomber" poured into a nice swirlable goblet.
In essence, I feel the brewer got the right balance between rich sweetness, roasty bitterness, and cleansing hop tang. The crisp carbonation level also helps to provide an overall sense of balance in a beer that is, by design, meant to be rich and sweet. A nicely dry finishjust caps off the experience properly.
This is a very good Scotch Ale. Better than most, by a long shot.

Had on tap at the brewery. Here goes:
A: Dark brown with a red hue. No head or lacing, however. Seems to be well carbonated.
S: Cherries and other dark fruit - a malt bomb.
T: Taste follows the nose, i.e., lots of dark fruit, especially cherries. Add brown sugar and caramel to the concoction as well. Beer is extremely sweet.
F: Thick and creamy. Good.
O: Solid beer. Person I was with loved it.

Pretty decent beer. The beer hits all the right notes but feels slightly off. The smell and taste certainly come off as caramel and a bit of toffee. The mouthfeel is pretty good.
