big thanks to funkybottoms for sending this one my way!
pours a rich dark roasted chestnut brown... very dark with a off-white two-finger foamy meringue-like head that fades relatively quickly and leaves good bits of lace.
aroma is great. roasted malts, brown sugar, caramel, toffee, molasses and turbinado sugar.
taste is roasty with a strong, intense, almost boozy malt backbone. then a rush of fresh, potent herbal and grassy hops, followed by a clean, sweet caramel nutty malt finish.
mouth is good, although slightly high on the carbonation for the style. moderate body, and after the carbonation bubbles away, it becomes pretty decent with a pleasant lingering clean bitterness.
all in all, I'm definitely impressed. I'm not a big brown fan, but this one has enough malt carachter and a touch of hops that it really works while keeping things interesting. I'd drink this by the growler if it were local!

This beer is served all over Tidewater Virginia in restaurants. I have had it on tap, 12 oz bottles and 22 oz bottles and have never gotten around to reviewing it. I bought a 12 oz bottle at Total Wine, Chesapeake for the express purpose of a review.
Pours a mahogany brown color with plenty of red light shining through. Medium size antique white/very light tan head with average retention. Some lacing on the glass.
Smell is roasted malt and a little chocolate. Fairly mild.
Tastes pretty good. Malt forward with roasted malt and a little chocolate. There is some mild balancing hops. Overall a fairly mild but tasty beer.
Mouthfeel is crisp, maybe a little on the light side but goes well with food. A little potent for a session beer at 6.00% but the alcohol is not noticeable.
Nothing outstanding but I am always happy to see it on a menu.
