Notes/Commercial Description:
Legend Hopfest begins with a sturdy barley malt background including Munich and aromatic malts, as well as a few medium kilned malts producing a rich , deep orange colored beer. Step two, the hops; Hopfest sports a distinct pine/fruit aroma. Expect an intensely flavored brew, with hop flavor lasting throughout. There is a toasty, earthy background, adding a rich, malty dimension to the long finish. The end result is a full flavored IPA with a strong malt backbone and long satisfying hop finish.

A: The beer has a dark copper color with a thin slightly off-white head with nice creamy lacing. The beer is clear enough to read through, but has light sediment.

S: This thing gives off scent that can be smelled at about arms length. It has a very HUGE citrus hop scent. Lots of grapefruit and some light spruce.

T: The flavor is a bit lighter than the scent would lead on. It has a nice mellow hop bitterness. I get the same grapefruit flavor, and some faint malt grains. It's pretty well balanced.

M: It is a clean beer. There is light bitterness, but no harsh aftertaste. It is medium bodied with good carbonation.

O: Overall I think it's a nicely well balanced, solid pale ale. I would drink it again and would recommend it. It's not insanely strong on the hops, but it has that extra punch to it.

Purchased at Poseidon's Pantry Gourmet Grocery and Deli on Chincoteague Island, VA.

Pours an almost clear deep orange with a 2 1/2 finger off white head that becomes chunky as it recedes and leaves some decent lacing.

Fair amount of sweet malt in the aroma balanced by fruity/piney hops. Over ripe citrus and malt syrup.

Not as sweet as the nose, but still the malt shows through. Grapefruit, orange, pine, caramel, bitter grapefruit peel.

Medium-plus in body. Light carbonation, light syrup, and slightly warming.

A pretty good beer. Satisfying and an easy drinker. Well rounded. I would try this again.

Had this on tap at Legends in Richmond. Poured a slightly hazy copper with a one-finger head. Delicious smell- bright, piney, fruity. I was impressed by the flavor, one of the better IPAs I've had recently. Taste followed the smell, but there was a little less bitterness than I expected given the aroma (maybe this has to do with including some Simcoe hops?). Either way, I will definitely be seeking this beer out again.

First try of Legend's Hopfest.

I'm a Richmond guy, and fully support Legend (Loves me some Legend Brown!) and all other local breweries, but I'm not gonna pull any punches, here.

Lately all of Legend's offerings are tasting the same to me. AND getting really misleading with the names they are giving their brews.

I did not find "Hopfest" to be a hop fest at all. It was a VERY strong malt front end with some decent hop feel on the back end. The warmer it got, the more pronounced the malt.

Not a bad brew by any means - Just not what you would expect from the name. Strangely enough, it reminded me of a couple of their "IPA" offerings. To the point of me thinking it's just the same beer with a different label.

Would not buy again, and I'm starting to think Legend is coasting on their local rep.
