From notes on 09/04/12:
Bottled: 11/15/11; Poured in a snifter.

A - A bit less than an inch of light tan, densely carbonated head with okay retention; Very dark mahogany brown with a deep plum hue; Bits of lacing left here and there

S - Sugared and rum soaked plums, raisins, grape juice, licorice candy, underlying chocolate, decent dose of alcohol, and phenolic notes

T - Some alcohol presence up front that lingers and slowly diminishes - certainly noticeable, but still pretty good for a 13% ABV beer; Pretty big flavor here with qualities similar to the nose - Plenty of sugary, rum-soaked plums among other dark fruits such as figs and raisins; Also get some grape and vinous flavor in there as well; Underlying chocolate and caramel flavors add a nice level of depth

M - A bit under full bodied with a low amount of fine carbonation that gently massages the tongue; Finishes on the dry side with a bit of stickiness left behind; Some alcohol warmth steps forward, but less than I would expect for such a big beer

O - I obviously knew this was a big beer going in, but was surprised by the 13% ABV listed on the label - alcohol is there, but nicely integrated with the other flavors. The aroma and flavor were quite enjoyable as there's many layers of notes to pick apart. Having tried a roughly 10 month old bottle, I'm curious as to how this beer would evolve with another 12 months of age.
