Poured from a 22 oz brown bomber into a Samuel Adams Perfect Pint glass. No freshness date but initially released in February 2013. Purchased at Market Street Wineshop (Charlottesville, VA) for $5.49..

A: Dusky amber-brown with 1-2 finger, foamy beige head with decent retention and ample lacing.

S: The aroma is sweet caramel, bready, with a light herbal hop presence. This one is malty all the way, but it smells a little too sweet and caramelly, almost buttery.

T: The flavor is a good mirror of the aroma, quite sweet, with a big hit of caramel, bordering on cloying, with a solid bready maltiness and a light noble hops note and mild bitterness. This is not a bad beer, but it would be better if they had cut back the CaraMunich and the chocolate malts back some. It just comes off too sweet. The breadiness they have right on -- the sweetness needs toned down some. The alcohol is very well hidden.

M: A little too much body for the style, not quite as smooth as it should be, I think due to the overabundance of caramel malts, lending an overly candylike sweet burn rather than the smooth bready lager it should be.

O: Not a bad beer from Legend and I think it could improve a lot with a little less of the sweeter caramel and chocolate malts to cut the sweetness a little bit. The breadiness is good and it is well-brewed with no hot alcohols. This tweak would make it a much more drinkable and enjoyable doppelbock a little more in line with the smooth yet robust types of lagers in this style. A good stab at it though.
