Been drinking Legend's brews for a while now, decided to stop in and get one on tap.
The Atmosphere is pretty laid back. I;'m not sure if the main area was non-smoking or not, but nobody in the main pub was. The smoking seem confined to a room off to the right as you walk in the main door, leaving the rest of the place smoke free. I was hoping for a TV so I could watch a game, but no dice.
Service was good. The bartender was knowledgeable on different beers. She also recognized regulars and addressed them by name as she pulled their mugs off the shelf.
Food was decent. I had a burger and fries, and enjoyed both.

I remember standing in the alley just outside the tasting room, because there only like 12 seats in the tasting room. Legend was my first beer love in richmond. From those humble beginnings Legend morphed into what you see today. A very nice restaurant upstairs and a nice beer vibe. The Legend brown and IPA were always a mainstay, my favorite was the porter until Tom the owner made the master brewer change the recipe to make it more mainstream. This is the only brewery where I retain a mug the "Beerslayer", the barley wine is my new favorite. There has been constancy issues with food and beer over the years. But I still recommend everyone try a Legend brew. They were the first good craft brewery in Richmond and have stuck around. We all owe Legend our beer respect.

I am a native Richmonder and have never really cared for this establishment at all. The service is slow and the host/waitstaff is curt at best. Unless you are a regular the bartenders will barely give you the time of day. The food is bland and really bad. Beer selection is decent, but then again their beers aren't all that great. The best beer they had was the Porter which is now retired.
If you plan on going make sure you do not overdo it or have a DD with you so you do not have to leave your vehicle overnight. The last time I went to Legend was for a birthday party and we left the car there and took a cab home. The next day we came back to find the back window smashed in and the car had been rifled through. The brewery is in a bad part of town and they have basically zero security (not even cameras). Haven't been back since.

There's two distinct atmospheres to this place - summer with the deck open and young people flock to it, and winter with the deck closed and grizzled older locals are hanging out in a dark room (even with the windows). Most, however, are actually really nice people... just doesn't look inviting when stepping in the door.
That aside, the rest is the same:
Waitstaff don't seem to care about you if you look under 35 or aren't their friends - I have had two occasions where I went with the GF (now fiance), was seated and put in a drink order for both of us, only to wait an hour for a warm and bland beer for one of us while the other had to wait some more.
The beer selection is actually fairly decent, even if the quality of some of the aforementioned beer isn't. However, being as this is a review of the place and not of the beers/beauty is in the eye of the beerholder, I'm leaving it at that.
The menu looks fairly appetizing, the few times I've actually been given one when seated. However, when the food eventually comes out, even if prepared properly, it's usually uninspiring - bland burgers, super greasy fried foods... definitely have gotten a little sick after eating there on at least two occasions.
Oddly enough, I went a few times with my parents, and it's like a 180 degree reversal - beer was still hit/miss, but service and food were good. Still scratching my head about that...

I wasn't very impressed with this place at all. Dive bar vibe, or at best an old bar that is way past it's prime, and has never been updated. On the plus side, there are a lot of windows, and the view of the city at night was quite impressive. There was a good-sized bar and plenty of table space, and a separate pool room where smoking is permitted. I know an establishment can't really control its clientele, but the people here were really seedy/trashy, and it was just a pretty uncomfortable experience all over.
As far as beer goes, they did have quite a few selections on tap, and available in bottles for take out. But the quality wasn't there. Most of the stuff was just standard swill, with the Bourbon Barrel Barleywine being the only real deviation from the norm, and really the only brew even remotely worth writing home about.
Service was pretty sketchy as well. The bargirl seemed to hate life, and wasn't very attentive. Maybe she was having a bad night, I don't know, nor do I want to. At least the food service was decently quick. Menu consisted of mainly comfort foods, decent burger options...I think I got the black & bleu burger, which was good, but I've had better. I think the wife got the pulled pork which she seemed to enjoy.
Prices were decent, though for the quality of the beer, I'd say not worth it.
Overall, this is a place I'd never want to go back to. Worth a pop in? I guess, but I wouldn't really recommend it. Might as well just get a 12 pack of Bud Lite and go watch WWE in your hotel room instead. Legend has been around for a while, so apparently they have dug themselves into a comfortable and profitable rut with no intention of upping their game or evolving with the craft beer scene.
