The tan-colored head on this beer rises to a creamy and foamy 2 fingers tall and extremely tight-bubbled. Retention isn't as good as I would expect given that it wasn't loose at all, but even after receding a full thick layer of foam continues. Lacing is left in thick spotting preceded by a ring where the head's settled after dropping.
There's some good spicing in that it's very much present without being overbearing. It's more of a kitchen spices effect with a steely/bready malt, a little herbal on the end and, with coaxing, sort of a cocoa note underneath.
The flavor is about the spicing, but there's a bit of malt backbone to keep it together. It sort of phases in and out between tasting a bit thin and offering more than spices. Ultimately it's a little bit of allspice and something like ginger, maybe some nutmeg too, over top of heavy breads and a little leaf to balance while some cocoa and caramel, maybe orange peel too, linger underneath. Something keeps it from coming all together, though.
The feel is the best aspect although that, too, is inconsistent. At times it seems thick, then thins out only to feel thick again in the same sip. The firm crispness does last the entirety, though, and it's smooth to boot.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled on 10/18/2013. Pours moderately hazy reddish copper color with a 1-2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings down the glass, with some moderate streaming carbonation. Aromas of caramel, toast, raisin, plum, apple, brown sugar, bread, light cinnamon, herbal, and toasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance of malt, spice, and yeast ester notes; with decent strength. Taste of caramel, toast, brown bread, raisin, plum, apple, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, herbal, and toasted earthiness. Lingering notes of caramel, toast, brown bread, raisin, plum, apple, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, herbal, and toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice balance and robustness of malt, spice, and fruity ester flavors; with no cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a moderately creamy and bready mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is a nice winter warmer style. Good balance and robustness of malt, spice, and fruity ester flavors; and very smooth to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering.

Poured from 12oz. bottle into a standard pint glass.
Hazy copper in color, with a nice cap of light tan foam.
Aroma-Toasted malt, faint spices
Taste-Sweet toasted malt, cinnamon, spices, subtle citrus notes. Decent flavor and balance, not overdone. Worth a try.

A - pours an opaque cinnamon reddish brown. Nice fluffy milky white head. Good retention and nice lacing.

S - Malt forward in the nose, caramel, dough. Not a huge aroma.

T - Follows the nose - malts up front, big bread and biscuity chewy mouth feel. A touch of nutmeg / spices in the back end.

O -This drinks more like a winter warmer than an american red ale to me. Solid and worth a second look.
