I think the bottle I received is a skunked one. The one I sampled feels and smells more like a wheat beer. Looks unfiltered and cloudy. Smells wheaty and an aroma of bananas. Taste like a homebrew gone bad. Not impressed at all. I am a big fan of Michigan beer but Frankenmuth, Please do not sell this brew again!

From BeerAdvocate Magazine #73 (Feb 2013):

Not your usual IPA here, not as clean as expect either but still a decent sip. Hops are a bit brash and come across as perhaps too much though we are hopheads so we can take a bit of punishment. Enough malt to balance it out for the most part, the lively yeast left a trail of nuances for the palate to figure out or be confused with. Worth a try.

STYLE: American IPA
ABV: 6.9%
AVAILABILITY: Year-round

LOOK: Pale copper color, good clarity, sticky lacing

SMELL: Citrus, mint, earthy, caramel, herbal, evergreen, browned apples, musty yeast, estery

TASTE: Creamy, medium bodied, very bitter, semi-astringent, caramel, dried grass, yeast, herbal, minty, citrus rind, tropical fruit, mineral, semi-dry bitter finish

Notes from 2/12/11

A - Pours a somewhat hazy deep golden brown with three fingers of pillowy off-white. Nice rising carbonation. Leaves some nice lacing.

S - Subtle citrus hop aroma. Overall, aroma is underwhelming.

T - I don't see a freshness date, but believe this is pretty fresh. Hops are definitely the dominant component of the taste. Mostly citrus with some pine. Decent amount of malt to balance.

M - Medium mouthfeel with some lingering bitterness.

O - Certainly not a bad beer, but compared to other available IPAs, this is a little underwhelming and doesn't really stand out.

12oz brown bottle with no freshness date.

LOOK: Massive head, hazy amber.

SMELL: Citric, spice, biscuity grain, yeast, pears.

TASTE: Hop bitterness, grainy, yeasty, dried hay, herbal, astringent, fruity, dry.

Raw comes to mind, a bit more yeast character than I was expecting. Hop bitterness is at a fine level but the hop character on a whole is blindly flailing at the palate. Decent for the style though does not come close to the benchmark for it.

12 oz bottle, undated but purchased arlier this month near the brewery.

Pour is hazy with a high level of visible carbonation. The amber body is topped by a proportionate and durable off-white head.

Both the aroma and the flavor reflect a slightly skunky element that is subtle enough to possibly be part of the hop component. In any case hops have citrus, pine and herbal aspects. Solid malt base. Mildly bitter finish and aftertaste are better.

Medium body with crisp, lightly aggressive carbonation.

The color is a clear amber-yellow, maybe even just verging on amber but not quite that dark. There's persistent bubbling activity, though the head never rises more than one finger and recedes fairly quickly. It does, however, retain a sturdy layer that drops a ring and some patches of lacing.
I like the aroma, though some might dislike that the bready malts vie for prominence with the floral and citrus notes (not so much pine, as advertised, though a whiff is there). The hops do win out, though.
The flavor profile is interesting, and after I get past the spritz on the tongue, I get an interesting sweetness in there along with a pithy sort of bitterness. It also gets very minty, too much so for the profile to work completely. It does seem a little muddled. As an IPA, this one's middle of the pack until it's fine-tuned.
As mentioned, there's a spritzy feel in this beer's light-medium body. They may have overshot refreshing, as it never fades off and, while smoothness does come in, it's a little too filling; these two contradictory things combined don't work, though it's not terrible.

Thanks to semibaked for throwing this one my way. pours a hazy apple cider hue with a nice two finger head that leaves pretty stunning lace. the color and the haze is a bit funky, but looks nice.

aroma is somewhat subdued, with notes of caramel apple, lemon zest, and touch of floral spice and a bit of doughy yeasty bread.

flavorful with doughy bread up front with herbal hops, floral hop notes, with hints of straw, tobacco, and leather. strong, with some substantial alcohol esters. reminds me flavor-wise of a strong double ipa... not necessarily a bad thing.

mouth is pretty creamy, a touch slick, but ample carbonation helps smooth everything out. body is moderate, and lingering bitterness is clean and pleasant.

all in all, very enjoyable... a touch on the strong and overbearing side for an ipa, but that doesn't mean it wasn't delicious - just not quite what I was expecting. If this one were local, I'm sure I'd be drinking it fairly regularly.
