Frankenmuth Brewery's New Year Stout - 2011, according to the label, is a hybrid of RIS and American stout. I think it leans more toward the American.

The beer comes in a huge, quart + bomber with a Grolsch-like stopper. It pours a dark brown color with a one inch, beige head that displays decent retention. I could find nothing malty about the aroma, but there was a fair hops presence. The taste was definately temperature sensitive, tasting like a weak english porter straight from the fridge, but as it warmed the flavor came out. A little bit of roasted malt sweetness was tempered, nearly overwhelmed, by the hops. The taste did not leave a strong impression. The mouth feel was barely medium bodied, rather light for a beer with RIS ambitions, and little carbonation. Drinkability was no problem, I finished the bomber easily.

This was my first sample of a Frankenmuth offering, and not too bad. I would like to see them try a full RIS, since I don't see one among their current beers.
