Two years old and not much left other then tartness. Some citrus in the nose.
As it warms some caramel comes up and displaces some tart.
Also, not much carbonation left.
(Didn't intend to age this one, it ended up in a pile with the Anniversary Imperial Stout.)

A beautiful dunkel brewed in Michigan, wow dark amber chest but brown ruby highlights light tab head, fine speckled lacing. Aroma has dark fruit light roasted malts the type of beer that should be guzzled in awe! Flavor has light roasted malts big layered flavor profile, with dark fruit beautiful beer i am in love with it.
It's a beer I can drink a lot of medium bodied smooth all day carbonation this is good stuff! Great feel and taste it's perfect German style bottle conditioned lager.

A big thanks to my wife and The Copper Vine for an excellent Father's Day gift.

1 liter, swing-top bottle #1710 of 1862 poured into a Pilsener glass.

A- It's kind of difficult to pour this big bottle (heft, navigating the swing top). A 2-finger, light tan head is created on top of the clean, brown body (mahogany/chestnut?). Heavy carbonation is apparent. Great head retention and rings.

S- Sweet malts at first. Caramel with slight nuttiness. Light berry notes with grassy hops being lighter still. Almost like a dark, grainy German bread at points. Sour aroma sets in later on.

T- Kind of sweet at first. Caramel and something of tart cherries. Sour flavor comes through quite strong later on. The bottle mentions an addition of the "original Frankenmuth Dark." Maybe this contributes to the sour notes?

M- Medium body and carbonation. A little residual sweetness and tart pucker.

O- What an odd little beer. I went in expecting a very traditional Munich Dunkel considering the German roots of this brewery. I was met with a very intriguing beer. Intentional or not, I found it quite enjoyable.

Bottle from Champagne Cellars. I felt pushed by the 1950s lager claim, others including my party shaking their heads at the style chosen for such an event. Pours mahogany medium brow, a generous retained head, with no smell to speak of.The minority of the beer is a decent brown ale German dunkel, with a little body from the black malt, and a tad roasty. The main part of the beer is an off sourish taste, with unintentional lactose,a bit funky. Both intriguing and repelling, with the latter winning out. A very expensive lager for sure.

1 liter swing top bottle into lager glass; Bottle 881/1862, bottled in October 2012. Pours lightly hazy reddish copper color with a nice 1-2 finger dense light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with some moderate streaming carbonation. Aromas of pear, apple, grape, caramel, toast, brown sugar, brown bread, floral, light pepper, light nuttiness, and herbal earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and decent strength. Taste of pear, apple, grape, caramel, toast, brown sugar, floral, light roast, brown bread, pepper, and herbal earthiness. Lingering notes of light fruits, caramel, toast, brown bread, floral, pepper, light roast, and herbal earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Solid balance of bready and toasted malt with fruity notes; with solid complexity and minimal cloying sweetness present after the finish. It was overly fruity at first, but it balanced out a bit as it warmed to room temperature. Medium carbonation and body; with a fairly creamy, slick, and lightly crisp mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with nearly zero warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a good Dunkel lager style. Pretty good balance of malt, fruit, and earthy flavors; and very smooth to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering.
