I can't say I'm terribly knowledgeable when it comes to barley wines, though I've had one or two. I certainly seemed to enjoy this one quite a bit more than some of the other reviewers. I'll confess, it's a tad harsh, acidic, but in a unique, citrus way that I rather liked.
Goes well with the bread the brewpub serves. Give it a try.

Enjoyed on-tap at the brewpub. The winner in their lineup, and do not leave Tampa without trying. A bit lacey, reddish body. Not as fresh tasting as the rest of their lineup. Drying finish, crisp, very smooth drinking. A little woodiness, a bit biased toward sweet. Very good hoppiness.

Served on tap at TBBC in Tampa FL. I'll start by saying I don't typically like barleywines and this was no exception. Don't really understand the style. My ratings which I intend to be against the style, may be lower sinply because I don't think it tastes good.
Pours a crisp looking medium amber. See through and with minor amounts of foam. Didn't really get much out of the nose - some esthers, alcohol. The Taste - an astringent, puckering, medicinal taste. Burns, and difficult. The latter half was a down the hatch.
Is this good compared to other barleywines? I'm not the one to answer that question.

Pours a reddish amber. No much head and very light thin lace. Smells sweet with malt and some citrus. Also alcohol. This beers ABV appears to jump around from batch to batch. I've seen reviews @ 13% ABV down to 9%. It was @ 10% for me today.
Pretty tasty. A little sweet. Probably the best beer here @ TBBC, though.

Poured a deep mahogany with dark tan head two fingers in width that fades slowly and leaves filmy legs and spider web lacing.
The aroma has hints of brandy with deep, burnt dark sugars, molasis, and toffee balanced out with earthy and faint floral notes. Complex.
Flavor is smooth, rich and elegantly balanced. Overall toffee sweetness with vanilla hints dominates but its balanced with earhty, grassy notes that keep it from being cloying.
Rich, thick and smooth
Overall an excellent, smooth, and easy drinking sipper.

I did the sampler at Tampa Bay Brewing Company one day last month, and this is the one that really stood out in my memory.
A big, bold beer, the color of medium-stained maplewood. Smell is moderately sweet, a bit caramely and with a bit of a hop dryness. The taste is pretty much what you'd hope an American barleywine to be. Nice, sweet but very well balanced with the hops, clean finish, not buttery, and a bit of a thick mouthfeel. I liked this quite a bit, and would order this just as soon as I'd order a Sierra Nevada Bigfoot.
other notes: I was told by the brewer that the beer that I had was near the end of the tanks and has aged just about as long as this flavor gets to age. I was impressed, but I would imagine it'd taste a bit different when it was young.

This is a nice barleywine for being one that doesn't seem to be allotted the years of aging that makes the difference between good and great. Pours a clear mahogany with a little white head and minimal lacing. Plenty of sweet malt in the aroma and flavor, while the alcohol quietly announces itself. Bittering is a little shy of where it should be to duke it out with the malts, and hop flavors are kept on a short leash. There are hints of the dark fruit and caramel flavors that develop in a barleywine, but they're either in short supply or just haven't been given the time they need. Kudos to TBBC for brewing an intense beer, but this seems to suffer from the time pressure that is common to most brewpubs. It would be interesting to see where this might end up if it was aged for a couple of years. I rated drinkability high, not that it is sessionable, but simply against other of its barleywine peers.

Poured amber with red highlights and very small beige ring around the top.
Smelled of alcohol with maybe a small hint of licorice (sp?), and bark. The taste was heavy on the dates and even heavier alcohol. An overbite that would probably drop a moose so I know where they got the name. Hops overpowered the entire drink to the point of not being enjoyable. Grass and maybe some lemon followed
The sting of hops and alcohol didn't leave me with a welcome taste. I don't like giving bad reviews to good brewers but I'm going to have to here.

First had: on tap at the brewpub in Tampa
Poured a slightly hazed copper color, with a small white head that sank to a ringlet, and left dabs of soapy lacing on the glass. Sweet malts in the nose, light fruit esters, somewhat floral/herbal hops. Didn't really taste like a barleywine at all. There was a medicinal/phenolic quality to it that is present in some barleywines, but it was more an off-taste here. Flavors of toasted grains, ripe fruits, distant herbal hop bitterness...and spiked with vodka. Seriously, it tasted to me like they got the high ABV in this by spiking an off-flavored pale ale with vodka or moonshine. Body was light-medium, thin for the style it was supposed to be. Not very good, and not very exemplary of any style of barleywine. I think "boilermaker" might be more suiting.

Poured on-tap at the Tampa Bay Brewing Co brewery in Ybor City. The beer was served in a chalice, and it pours a crystal-clear ruby-red coloring with a thin film coating of head. Supersweet roasted caramel aromas, with a slight brandy smell. Flavors are pungent and strong, riding a full and round body that is slightly slick and oily. Flavors are rich honey, caramel, and booze. There is a slight smokiness to the aftertaste, and the booze becomes astringent, making the finish rather sharp, and a little harsh. Great flavors, but definitely a sipper, as most Barleywines are. Very rich and very tasty!
