First had: on tap at the brewpub in Tampa
Dark brown pour with a thin, bubbly, off-white head; minimal retention and dots of lacing. Muted aromas of indistinct hops and dark roasty malts. Taste was similar, pretty lacking in flavor overall, compared to other beers of the style, grainy, caramel and chocolate malts, fairly roasty, with citrus and pine notes. Body was light-medium, seemed thinned out and bland. Not entirely bad, but not very exemplary of the style. More like an amber ale with extra chocolate malts added for color.

A-poured into pint glass as a dark mahogany with amber hues. off white head with moderate lacing.
S-mild citrus hop aroma up front blending with sweet malt.
T-pleasantly peppery hop flavor dominates with a mild undercurrent of malt.
M-rich and slightly acidic. the balance seems like they are still trying to perfect this brew.
O-i tried this due to it being a seasonal offering. it is decent in terms of drinkability, but struggles to really bring out and balance the elements of the style. if i was a regular at Tampa Bay Brewing Co. I probably wouldn't be sad during the portion of the year when it isn't available, but even though it seems like a rather amateur attempt at the black IPA style its still worth a try.
salud!
