A barley wine brewed in the English style. Struis is a full-bodied beer with a deep, dark colour and a soft, long-lasting head. The aroma is dark and sweet, with clear tones of chocolate and dried fruit. The aftertaste is dry and long-lasting, and leaves you yearning for more. A delicious accompaniment to food and ideal with skeapsrond cheese. Struis is only available as a bottled beer.

A bottle at the brewery.

LOOK: Murky brown, massive head.

SMELL: Crackers, dry maltiness, marmalade, grape skin, dried grass, wild herbs

TASTE: Dried hay, toasted bread, very dry, mild hopping, alcohol, dried dark fruit.

This is a big beer but deceiving in the way of dryness & drinkability. Big enough to go up against the stinkyest of cheeses.

Bottle purchased at Green's on Ponce in Atlanta.

Pours a hazy chestnut brown color with a half-finger tan head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving decent lacing.

Smells of syrupy caramel malts with good amounts of toffee and booze-soaked raisins. Also present are other dark fruits, mostly dates and dried plums.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Heavy caramel malt flavors up front are joined shortly by good amounts of dark fruit flavors dusted with brown sugar. Midway through the sip an indistinct spiciness comes into play, carrying through to a sweet ending.

Mouthfeel is good. It's got a nice thickness with smooth carbonation.

Drinkability is also good. I finished my glass without a problem and could have another.

Overall this was an easy-drinking BSDA with a sneaky high ABV. Worth a shot.

A-This beer pours a deep walnut brown hazy body with a nice light tan head. It has a nice Belgian lace through the beer.

S- This beer has a nice brown sugar, dried fruit with a slight alcohol warmth.

T- This beer has a nice roasted malt flavor with a slight sweet dark sugar flavor. It has a faint roasted coffee note that has a faint sourness.


M- This beer has a full mouthfeel with a bit of some fizz.

D-This is a good solid beer with nice complexity but not huge complexity.

Very decent yeasty. Yes candi, pineapple, apples. Though overall not too complex. Creamy medium-thin mouthfeel. Could use food for mouth puckering finish. A fine one to have once.There are better in the brewery's lineup. At the Brick Store Pub, with the Atlanta B.A. crew.

Pours a nice russet. Bubbles float to the top rather leisurely. Massive billowy eggshell head with great retention.

A really interesting nose. Spice, cloves, at first. Followed by an onslought of fruit. Sort of tart, thinking grapes... almost cider like at moments. Loads of dark fruit backing it up though.

Up front is pretty straight forward. Surprisingly light caramel malt. Middle develops more of a spiced bread character, cinnamon and nutmeg with candi sugar. Backend it develops a bit of a tartness, which lasts through the finish, wraps things up pretty nicely. This beer really unfolds in stages, very interesting.

A really interesting strong ale. Alot to like about it.

coaster-notes

appearance: cool label art, poured into a chalice - muddy brown body, light tan ring

smell: brown sugar, caramel malts, lots of dark fruit, spiced cake

taste: bartender described it as being similar to some belgian offerings (i believe he mentioned the words trappist and rochefort)...i enjoyed this beer, as i've enjoyed almost everything i've sampled from 't IJ over the years - nice sweet malts, caramel, brown sugar, spice, nutmeg, light sticky hops

mouthfeel: nice smooth medium body

drinkability: good

A: Light rootbeer color, soda like carbonation, dirty head.
S: Spezi like, lemon meringue, light and yeast.
T: Very nice, less sweet cola, the yeast softens the malt, Very well crafted and blended. Alcohol quite subtle.
M: Fresh, medium body, light carbonation.
O: Very good, very nice.

From a bottle flown back from Amsterdam. Poured a murky red and brown with an off-white head and a big of lacing. And like my bottle of Columbus, this is a sour, juicy Belgian. I don't knowifthis is supposed to be sour, but it kind of works. The aroma is strong with what you might call horseblanket, that rich, pungent, tangy hay and barn aroma, some of us (myself included) manage to enjoy. There's also a hint of cherry and apple juice that become stronger in the flavor. There's a bit of peppery spice and black licorice and the beer finishes with a lemony bitterness. This beer reminds me of De Proef's primitive ales as it blend both lambic and more tradition dark Belgian flavor. I'd definitely give this a try if you like funky beer.

Struis (Ostrich) is the brewery's flagship beer. It pours up very nicely into an over-sized goblet with typical ample carbonation. The color is deep golden-burnt orangish/copper with a dense frappe-whitish head. Delicious aromas of candied ripe fruit, mulberry spice and sweet orange marmalade dominate. The well integrated malt flavors are wonderfully rich with hints of tangerine citrus, treacle, and some brandied character mixed in the slightly dry-hoppy finish. This beer exemplifies how dangerously drinkable this style can be. Drink as an apertif or paired with tangy Stilton cheese & peppered crackers. This rare treat is definitely worth seeking out. Here's to Brouwerij 't IJ (The Egg)!

Pours murky brown with a huge head.
Nose shows musty chocolate, raisins and golden syrup. A bit rough.
Same story with the flavours; chocolate, golden syrup, not all that complex Very high carbonation, pretty ridiculous.
Not all that impressive really.

Served at cool cellar temperature, around 50º.
Bottle has a distinct clear red tint when held to the light.

Once opened, the bottle foams a little, so have a glass ready. It pours a deep brown with a red glint. Foam is an offwhite eggnog color. Some small amounts of lacing result.

After 5 minutes of sitting, the aroma has a sweetness of spiced cake with a little caramel. There's a bit of mustiness at first, but it seems to fade into the background.

Bready flavors with sweet oatmeal raisin cookie overlaying a musty herbal aftertaste. Some cola, licorice, or sassafras character. Grape and some subtle red wine woodiness. Sweet but with a slightly drying finish. Drinks pretty easy, but one is enough in a sitting.

Pours deep amber/caramel color with thick puffy white head that kicks off thick gobs of lace.
Aroma of caramel, coriander and some other unidentified spices with some darker citrus fruits in the background.
Flavor of sweet chewy malt, some yeast, little bit of smoke and some classic Belgian spice.
Mouthfeel is smooth and matly to start then a moderately picy middle followed by a heavy alcoholic hit on the finish.
Drinkability is very good. Really nice surpirse. Good solid beer.

Pours a dark, slightly translucent brown with a full, rich, gorgeous off-white head in a Leffe goblet. There isn't much prettier than this pour. Left a moderate amount of deep brown yeast that stayed at the bottom of the bottle. After a few minutes, the head settles somewhat unevenly,

Aroma is much better than expected- a rich, full, quadrupel-like aroma of fruits- dark fruits, banana, clove, and the like, surrounded by an off-sweet malt. Flavor follows through in a very nice strong dark ale, full and rich mouthfeel that is downright pleasant (just a tad thin, but not enough to quibble over). Alcohol profile is stronger than I like- it should be there without being noticed, here it starts to burn the throat as it goes down.

Brouwerij 't IJ is one of the better breweries in the Netherlands, imo. It has brews like they should be: unflitered and unpasteurizedMurky brown with huge beige head.
Smell of apple pie. cinnamon. some fresh lemongrass too.
Taste similar. It's a good balance of bitter and sweetness. A hint of chocolate. Full flavoured, lingering in the mouth. It stays long as well.
Good brew. It's a dark brew, but allthough there's some roasty character in the malts, the spice and fruit esters dominate this, making it very easy going.

Notched as good until at least 04/2004 - this is now 3 1/2 years past that point...

Pours a very cloudy dark amber/brown with a 1 finger off-white head that leaves some lacing and a good bit of a layer on top of the beer.

Smells interesting - some slightly muddy dark fruits and port. Something else I can't quite put my finger on.

Taste is slightly oxidized, but acceptable for the age. Dark fruits - plums and the like. Some sweetness - maybe a touch of toffee. Touch of port. Overall, nice - slightly muddy in the flavors, but still enjoyable. I'll also give it a bit more leniency with regard to the muddiness because of the age.

Mouthfeel is rich, with low-ish carbonation. This has become somewhat of a sipping beer.

Drinkability is decent.

Overall, recommended. A tasty aged Beglian style beer.

Edit: Just a note - Sam at Stuffed Sandwich described this simply as "interesting." I'd have to agree.

This isn't exactly an apples-to-apples comparison, because the beer I had was aged seven years. This is a great beer to age. Really brings out malt floralness and tamps down the sweetness. Beautiful and flavorful, but much patience needed to get it to perfection.

On-tap at Brouwerij 't Ij, Amsterdam, Netherlands

A: The beer is very hazy dark amber brown in color. It poured with a half finger high off white head that gradually died down, leaving a thin head covering the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of dark fruits-prunes seem to stand out in particular-are present in the nose.
T: The taste is similar to the smell and is a little sweet with flavors of dark fruits and very slight hints of toffee and caramel.
M: It feels a bit more than medium-bodied and a little smooth on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is very pleasant and easy to drink. Any traces of alcohol are completely hidden from the taste.

Deep and dark on the pour, head and lace are modest, light beige in color. The nose is ripe fruit, spicy, sweet, bubble gummy. Start malt and slightly sweet, middle thin, finish sparingly hopped, desert dry, astringent. Hearty overall, and is quite appealing, and well worth a sample.

Presentation: 11oz bottle (Batch #20) in a tulip glass

Opened with a nice hiss, poured with some vitality, energy, crackle. Strong deep fruited nose, full of fig, raisin, prune. Burnt caramel adds a bittersweet aspect, damp with wood and cardboard, slightly Saisoned (Saisoned?) with sourness, alcohol lurking in the background. With some air the fruits rise stronger & thicker.

A fat 3 fingers of semi-loose antique ivory foam softly snapped and slowly settled to a finger's worth of the same, but some gentle agitation & swirling restores it with decent retention that laces in curtains. The sediment & yeast create a opaque color that actually looks like real deep, rich caramel! It looks like you could slice this! A nice piece of eye candy.

Whoa...if you have ever been on one of those amusement park vertical rides that WHOOSHES! you right straight up (or down) immediately from a dead stop....that is what the 1st taste of this is like. Initially that Saison like yeast induced sour aspect is there along with all the figs, raisins, prunes, all adding a very unusual sweet quality. Caramels are deep but not burnt, but also not significantly sweet. All that said, it's smooth in a crushed velour (not silken or satiny) way.

The yeast rise up on the palate, continuing that quasi-sour taste but overall it gets a little sweeter, lighter. Faint fruits hide in the background as the alcohol, which was slowly building, continues to grow warmer, fuzzier until a soft glow pervades the whole of the mouth.

It finishes warm, alive, crisper than it starts, leaving a surprisingly clean aftertaste along with some tingling teeth.

Wow....this is like a marriage of a good Saison and a good Belgian Dark Ale. Very enjoyable, tasty, surprisingly sour n' unsugary sweet on top of the warmth. This is screaming for some good cheese, and could likely pair well with any decent fromage. I could see some spicy simple fare (aged sausages, artisan bread) also working well. A most unusual example of the style and a very nice beer experience. Fans of either Belgian style mentioned previously should seek this out, if you like both this may become your go to. Definitely recommended to anyone looking for something good & different.

Drank from my St Bernardus chalice.

A - Pours a hazy chestnut colour with a tanned one fingered head that reduces to a lacing film.

S - Aromas of aniseed, caramel malts and spice.

T - Slight aniseed taste up front before an explosion of flavours of caramel, spice, burnt toffee and caramel and a little aniseed, almost boiled sweet flavours. Finishes with a warm booze flavour. Very nice and complex.

M - Medium to full body with medium carbonation, perhaps a little too much.

D - This is one of those beers that you pick up and it surprises the hell out of you. This is a complex brew that offers a lot.

nose --
Immediately I smell fruits, specifically pineapple. Very extraoridinary and unique nose!

taste/mouthfeel --
The taste, like the nose, has distinct notes of pineapple. Slight hint of raisons. Slightly bitter, but not floral. Fairly sweet. The beer tastes extremely fresh - almost like I was consuming it right from the tap. I am always impressed by the beers this brewer produces.

drinkability --
Drinkable, which is scarey. Beers around 9% that go down this easy, like Duvel and Brooklyn's Fortitude, always end up causing trouble.

The infamous ostrich and black egg lends to a thick opaque cider-like chestnut/garnet pleasure (unfiltered/unpasturized). A hard pour (1/2” held in bottle) sees a near 3 finger head fluff which within 5 minutes declines to a heavy macchiato with a scant sticky lace.

I found by the time I got a handle on this experiences 2/3’s of my beverage was gone. hMmm.

The nose with warming evolved from its pear, apple, banana, cardamom, clove with much softening and a bit more banana, now with some flowery hops. The carbonation was with spritz, perhaps lending to the lightness and later bite. I found two things happen, almost as if layered. First the fruit carried with softness, spritz rose, and the floral hops came up with a slight bite finish. The dryness at the end extenuated this final taste.
