Notes/Commercial Description:
After the ‘Zatte’, this is the oldest beer from Brouwerij ‘t IJ. Natte is classed as a ‘dubbel’, a Belgian category of smooth, dark beers. Because we partly use dark malt, Natte has a reddish-brown colour and a smooth, roasted flavour with earthy tones of brown sugar, nuts and plums. Completed with slightly bitter hops, this is a nicely balanced beer and one of the brewery’s classics.

A: hazy, cola colour, creamy head

S: yeast, sweet bready malts, hints of cola, caramel and apple

T: grassy notes, hints of brown sugar, malts, and even citrus

M: medium body, slightly undercarbonated, not dry (as the name suggests)

O: not something I will try again, undercarbonated, too sweet, little character

Brouwerij 't IJ Natte may look weird on paper (to a non-Dutch speaker anyhow) but it looks pretty good in the glass; dimmed, roast chestnut colour with an immense head, it would look great if its amber highlights weren't partly squashed by bottle sediment.

Dubbels are distinguished by two main qualities: rich, sweet malt and spicy, fruity yeast esters. This bouquet showcases only the latter, offering an abundance of candied and dried fruits (raisins, golden raisins, dates, prunes). Spice and savory storms are brewing...

And the palate is where lightning crashes. The taste is very spicy and dominated by an endless supply of clove as well as a mixture of nutmeg, pepper and anise. Golden raisin and dates are appreciated again. The malt bill offers only a hint of nuts or caramel, maybe.

It may be spicy enough to make you sneeze but in terms of malt Natte has only as much depth as a kiddie pool. Spicy/savory yeast entwines around it like climbing vines and chokes out everything else. In truth, however, the grain bill doesn't have the impression of complexity.

A Dubbels' charm is decidedly more sensual than either Abbye-style blondes or Tripels. Or at least it should be. Brouwerij 't IJ Natte is a little more dull to the senses than its better known Belgian counterparts. Still, it's not a bad little offering and I managed to enjoy it.

Picked from the local bottle shop...when in Amsterdam, eh?

Pour is massively foaming, to the poinf that I am sniffing the cloudy, tan beer for possible badness. Nose is sweet and sweeter, gentle fruitiness, and a not quite right bit of something. Huh.

Natte ain't quite in the dubbel sweet spot. Sweeet - in fact, it tastes a half-ton like the Strruis I had from the brewery last night. I could pretty much clone that one. Sweet, light fruits, Belgiany yeasts. Add a slight touch of off-putting dankness and knock this down a bit. Would not want to go round after round with this bottle.

Pretty blah, not much more than average. The brewery seems to suffer from the same fruity mid-section in all its beers. Does not work as well here.

On-tap at Brouwerij 't Ij, Amsterdam, Netherlands

A: The beer is hazy amber in color. It poured with a half finger high beige head that died down, leaving a thin head covering the surface, a collar around the edge of the glass and some lacing down the sides.
S: Light aromas of yeast, sweet malts and spices are present in the smell.
T: The taste is similar to the smell and also has flavors of pale malts along with hints of candi sugar. A faint amount of sweetness is perceptible.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This isn't the easiest drinking dubbel. I think I would have liked this better if it tasted sweeter.

33cl bottle poured into snifter. Cap says 01.2014. I reviewed this beer while listening to Low by David Bowie.

Pours dark toffee/coffee color with a 1/8 inch head. No lacing.

Smells like damp grass/straw. Sweet malts and dark fruits. Faint cloves.

Rustic malted barley hits first. A little bit of scalded flavor in there. Mostly refreshing in a pleasant way. It has a savoriness to it. Finishes with clean hops.

Its mouthfeel is thin but present and bubbly. The carbonation is subtle and light.

Tasty.
