The first beer to come out of our vats, back in 1985, making it the classic beer of Brouwerij ‘t IJ. It is a ‘tripel’, the category reserved for the stronger, blonde beers in Belgian tradition. Zatte more than lives up to expectations in this respect. It is a full-bodied, golden beer with a scent of fresh fruit mingled here and there with a hint of grain. The flavour is slightly sweet, ending with a fine, dry aftertaste. A delicious beer that can be enjoyed in all seasons.

11/13/06- Purchased at Plumpjacks in San Francisco, CA.

Presentation- 11.2oz bottle. Bottled on date notched on label. Poured into my St. Bernardus chalice.

Appearance- Deep golden in color. 3/4 inch head which retains a nice fluffy rim. Light streaky lace trails remain.

Smell- A textbook scent. High alcohol fumes, candied sugar with a fruitcake and cookie dough aroma.

Taste- High alcohol flavor. Really not much of any spices. Maybe some juniper berries. Not even as much sugar as in the nose. Reminds one of a malt liquor without the corn. Picture a Westmalle without the spices.

Mouthfeel- Waterlike, medium carbonated seltzer. Gin-like aftertaste.

Drinkability- Needs something major to tie this beer together. More sugar...how about at least some spices. Very bland. Pass on this one.

Opens with a bit of fuzz/ Dark brown bottle , 330 ml. 8 % abv.
poures in a tulip 't Ij glass. Pretty highly carbinated, smal bulbs, golden yellow appereance, 2 finger white head, dissolving at medium pace.
Smell, cookies and a bit of wild yeast and small hinst of peach.
Mouth feel, a bit out of balance, Some grapefruit kicking in fast leaving a bitter after tasre, but not too unpleassant.
't IJ does not make bad beers, but is a bit overrated for being in the capitak if the Netherlands on a touristic location.
Many of their beers disappoint a bit, this one can stand the tests.
3.5-area. Pretty good.

Shared 330 ml bottle at local tasting. Pale golden colour, moderate white head. Spicy and yeasty aroma, not unpleasant, but not your typical tripel. Dry flavour, okay but not very interesting, mild spicy notes, but again: not your typical tripel.

375ml bottle from Taste of the Lowlands. Pours out dark, clear golden, one finger, soft, fluffy head. Aroma is bready, buttery, mild savory characteristics. Taste is buttered sourdough bread, toffee, fruity, white pepper and gentle Belgian yeast. Creamy, smooth, full. Enjoyed this a lot.
