To begin with, I should admit that my experience at Brouwerij 't IJ may or may not be truly representative of the average experience (though looking at their photo on their website, I am lead to believe that it is). It was a very warm day, with temps in the mid-70s. The sun was shining, and it was as if all of Amsterdam wanted to come hang out at the brewery. It was PACKED. With no seating outside or in, I was at least able to find a small piece of wall to lean against and sip my beer.
That said, I was very impressed with the service. Inside, three bartenders were doing a remarkable job managing the hordes of people. The lines continuously stretched well outside the door all afternoon, but the three bartenders quickly took orders and handed you your beer within seconds. There is very little food to be had at the Brewery, but if you do order a plate of cheese or salami, the plates are all pre-prepared so there is no wait time after ordering. There was also an eight year old girl (who looked startlingly similar to Shirley Temple) collecting empty glasses.
The selection, though reasonable, was slightly disappointing with two of their beers already sold out by early afternoon (I have no way of knowing whether they sold out that day, or if they simply had never been replenished from the day(s) previous.) There were four of their beers on tap (Natte, Wit, Passij, and Columbus), and they were also selling bottles of Struis.
In terms of the atmosphere, the location is lovely. The brewery is in an old windmill right along the water, and the outdoor patio seating surrounds the base of the mill. Though crowded, everyone was good natured and friendly.
If large crowds don't frighten you and you want to enjoy a good beer on a sunny day, go for it. But there are other spots in town that offer a greater selection and a bit more quietude that lead me to think I will likely not return.

Located next to the Gooyer windmill, this is one of the most picturesque breweries I have visited! They have been open since 1985, in a building that used to be a municipal bath house, and have been crafting beer there ever since. The bar is a newer addition and they had 6 beers on tap when we visited. They are one of the only breweries we saw in Belgium and the Netherlands that actually offer a sampler, so we were able to try all the beers amongst our group. The walls of the tasting room are old and cracked white tiles from its bath house days and are lined with dusty and faded beer bottles. My Minnesota radar was on and I spotted a Fitgers sticker on one of the doors. Most of the beers were Belgian style, like a tripel, dubbel, and wit, but had a house flavor that didn't quite fit those categories.
The tripel and wit were a bit rough on the finish...perhaps too much coriander or other spices? Their Struiss barleywine was fantastic though, dripping with dark fruit, sugar, yeastiness and complexity. The busy family style bench and table set up in the room encouraged talking to neighbors and we ended up discussing beer with Canadian ex-pats and several locals. A very fun place to visit and worth the trip out there.

this place is awesome! do yourself a favor and get a sampler and grab a seat outside! they had a good selection of beer and my personal favorite was the IPA. the atmosphere was great they had big outdoor picnic tables, so you were able to sit with other people and enjoy beer. but one of my personal favorite feature of this brewery was it was located right beside a windmill. if you've ever been to Amsterdam you know everything is only a stone throw away, so with that being said hit this place up

Damn this building is cool. On the inside the selection is pretty typical of a brewery. Slightly disappointing there isn’t anything more special on draft than what they bottle and distribute, because everything we tried was really great. There is an enormous beer garden out front. Lots of people on beer tour mixed with lots of locals enjoying an afternoon brew.

very cool setting in amsterdam, on a nice day the patio is very cool where you can sit under some trees and sip their beers and enjoy some quality people watching. beer isn't amazing, but a fun hour or 2 hanging out at a great spot. definitely recommend to folks visiting amsterdam...easy tram ride from city center.
