Mellow Mushroom is without a doubt my favorite place in Asheville for good beer and food. When the weather is nice there is a patio/courtyard that's pretty cool to sit out on. As for the inside, it's like having a good acid trip. Decorated with psychedelic paraphenilia and tie die. Nice high ceilings. Good music. My only complaint is about the service when it is busy. Other than that, the beer list is among the best I've ever seen with about 30 draughts to choose from with many local brews. As for the food, the pizza is the best I've ever had and that is a bold statement because I used to live in NYC. The subs are pretty decent also. For an appetizer the parmesan pretzels are a must. Although the place is hippied out it can be rather pricey so be prepared to spend some money. The pizzas are expensive but you definitely will get what you pay for. A pint of beer runs around $3.50 which is pretty decent. To sum it up, if you are from out of town and are passing through Asheville it is a must visit. The place is a personification of the Asheville way of life.

Not being from down South, this was my first Mellow Mushroom experience. According to the reviews here, apparently this is considered one of the better MM locations? After my experience, that isn't a glowing endorsement of the chain...
We opted to eat lunch here because we have small kids, and pizza is always a hit with small kids. So a pizza place that got good beer reviews online seemed like a good compromise.
And this place was kid-friendly.
And they had craft beer. Which I like.
And the pizza wasn't "bad".
There just wasn't a whole lot "good" about it either. The pizza was mediocre, bordering on "sub-par". They had 30-some beers on draft, but in downtown Asheville, with so many interesting breweries nearby, I found the list to be largely unimaginitive. We practically opened the place at 11:00 AM, and despite being one of only 3-6 tables there throughout our entire meal, we received very slow service.
To top it all off, they brought out a pizza larger than what we ordered... my wife decided the leftovers would be useful, so we didn't complain. So that's my fault. But getting the order wrong initially is still on them.
Maybe it was just one bad experience? But all in all, I wouldn't really recommend it.
