Notes/Commercial Description:
This original Leipzig beer specialty lends us the name for our brewery. Gose is a regional beer specialty that was brought to Saxony-Anhalt in the year 1738. Originally Gose comes from Goslar, a small town in Lower Saxony, and the river “Gose” in this town. This beer specialty has a refreshing, slightly sour taste and is ideal for quenching your thirst. Gose is brewed with the additional ingredients lactic acid, cilantro, and salt. Gose is a top-fermented beer with 4.5% ABV and 10.8% wort. You can enjoy it in different variations.

A- Pours a cloudy golden yellow with a really thin white head. Head is gone in a second and no lacing is left behind.

S- Smell is light spices, lemon and grains or straw.

T- Nothing terrible and pretty simple. Follows the nose really well. A bit of a sour hit from the lemon, a touch of light spice and grainy.

M- Light in body with a good amount of carbonation.

O- A good change of pace bier. Something I couldn't drink really often but pretty nice.

This is my first gose and it has a very interesting smell right off the bat, its like seriously salty tortilla chips, then wheat and citrus. Color is bright yellow-orange and completely hazy. Flavor has a bit of salt and the back end and mostly wheat crackers up front. Quite the interesting beer but I wouldn't say its tart at all, citrus yes but not tart in the least.

Pours a golden yellow with a medium white head. Aroma of light sweet fruity esters, some light grassy notes. Taste is a sweet and salted sourness, some yeast with some light fruity notes. Palate is medium body with light carbonation. Finish is a sweet salted sourness with some yeast and light fruity notes. Taste like it was fermented on a bed of sea salt. Surprisingly I was able to finish drinking this brew as the flavor grows on you. Overall an ok and interesting brew.

A: Pours cloudy light gold with some visible sediment in it. The head was foamy and white, about a finger in height and quickly dissipated. The beer did exhibit some small amount of lacing on the glass.

S: Aromas of bready malts, a little floral, and a little lemon.

T: A little lemony with hints of tartness/sourness but very refreshing and with an apricot finish.

M: Light bodied with moderate carbonation, a slight tingle on the tongue from the acidity.

O: Very refreshing and something that would be wonderful on that first warm day of spring, enjoyed outside. I really enjoyed the beer and would love to see more offerings available in this style.

a: Looks like a hefe; except I couldn't coax much of a head out of this one.

s: Twangy wheat, mineral water, and some spice; coriander I suppose.

t: I tasted minerals that are vaguely salty and slightly sour wheat.

m: Big and chewy like a hefe, but a bit more still.

o: This wasn't bad but now I know why this isn't a more popular style.

The Stiegl stange, with its subtle, vertical curve, brandishes a clear, light amber beer with pervasive carbonation and a big, puffy, white head that lasts a long while. Sadly, there is no reportable lacing.

The aroma is simple, with straw, caramel and light floral notes.

Lemon, with a light, earthy tang, is followed by light sweetness, coriander, and pepper. Following on a theme, the lingering finish is light and soft.

Well carbonated, medium body and velvet texture.

A very refreshing beer. Makes for a welcome alternate to the easy session beers of summer.

11.2oz bottle poured into a tulip glass.

Appearance-Light yellow-gold with brilliant clarity and a decent sized white head with moderate retention.

Aroma-Perfumy, floral, and slight celery notes from the coriander. Light citric tartness is perceptible, along with a sea salt/ocean smell. Light bready malt. Interesting.

Flavor-Zingy tart lemon burst up front, probably from a bit of lactic acid. The tartness quickly dissipates, leaving a mixture of floral coriander and salt water in the mid palate. Due to the salt, the character is not exactly minerally, but actually tastes reminiscent of a mouthful of ocean water. Finishes with a bland bready malt character with a residual salty flavor.

Mouthfeel-Medium body with moderate carbonation. Mouthfeel is enriched by acid and salt. Slight prickle on the tongue from the initial acidity.

An interesting beer to say the least. I wouldn't exactly say I like it, but I imagine this is what a Gose is supposed to be like. I also imagine this is perhaps why Goses are no longer in vogue. Worth trying, but I doubt I'll seek it out in the future.

Poured from the bottle into a wheat ale glass. Getting my Gose-UH on.. oh yeah.

A foamy large head of about three fingers which falls at a good clip, slightly off white in color, stryofoam looking. Body is cloudy gold looking with faint dark muddy brown edges. Cola like bubbles stick to the sides, and some faint rising carbonation.

Nose is a good bit of chewy malt wheat, very faint clean lemon, even slight briny sense.

Taste is interesting. Clean refreshing lemon light sense, almost soda like, but a refreshing light tangy feel. Very light bodied but with a playful apricot finish.

Overall quite a refreshing drink, bordering on apricot soda, and malt refreshment. Quite nice.

Served on-draught at Bayrischer Bahnhof. Reviewed from notes taken in June 2011.

A: Pours a three finger head of slight (but nice) cream, average retention, and white colour. Colour is a hazy cloudy nontransparent orange-dirty brown colour. Appealing. A bit reminiscient of a hefeweizen, but "dirtier".

Sm: Hints of dirty esters. Sourness; maybe funk. Light and musty. Not great.

T: Souring estery hop climax. The open and body are comprised primarily of merely clean barley. The pinnacle is the souring hop climax; the finish carries those that linger. Simple, but a welcome change from mindless German pilseners. It's not quite balanced, but the climax is adequately emphasized.

Mf: Smooth and wet, complementing the sourness. A bit too wet, actually. Leaves a dry aftereffect that I'm not too fond of. Doesn't quite match the flavours of the body.

Dr: I don't really know the style well (this is me first beer in the style), but the emphasis seems to be on adequate presentation of the sourness. Belgian sours sure do this better, and this feels simple in comparison. I look forward to trying more beers in the style. Its low ABV never shows, not that you'd expect it to.

Picked this up at Winooski Beverage Warehouse.

Poured from an 11.2oz bottle.

Appearance: Three fingers of white head that goes to a thin ring before disappearing. Body is very hazy and the color of overripe bananas.

Smell: Lemon, banana, salt and a bit bready.

Taste: Definitely has that salt edge which is balanced but gives it a unique flavor. Refreshing with citrus, dough and herbs.

Mouthfeel: Lively and spritzy but it doesn't seem to hold quite together.

Overall: Interesting and different. Difficult to describe but it ended up being ok.

My first chance to sample this style, and I was interested to see how the use of salt would work. The salt was reserved, adding more of a sharp tangyness than actual salinity. Moderately tart, with some coriander in the background. Mouthfeel was lean and wheaty. I can see this as an excellent hot-weather quencher.
