Huguenots may have originated the style as they traveled through France to Flanders, having first mentioned it in the 1600s. Later, in 1809, Napoleon and his troops identified Berliner Weisse as the "Champagne of the North". He requested the beer be served with syrup to cut its extreme level of acidity. Our interpretation is a slightly softer, more mellow version of the "Berliner Weisse" style with a beautiful balance of tartness, fruitness, and sweetness.

I was suprised by the sourness of this beer and the low ABV. It is almost like they increased the sourness to add that missing alcohol burn.

I must admit the low abv turned me off slightly as I've become used to the 8% and above style beers.

Overall, interesting, nice touch with the sourness, but not quite something I would get again. If they raised the abv and it had a smooth alcohol burn aftertaste I would probably get it again.

This Berliner Weisse is actually brewed in Leipzig, a couple hundred kilometers to the south of Germany‘s capital. Leipzig is otherwise known for the Gose style beers, which are somewhat similar to Berliner Weisse.
The Berliner Weisse in front of me know is a very pleasant example, very low ABV at just 3%, which makes this a very nice mid-day refreshment. Straight from the bottle, this one is tart but not overly sour. Nice notes of fruit and yeast (make sure to leave the yeast in the bottle, don‘t pour it like you would with a Hefeweizen). Without syrup, this tastes line a most, almost like a young fruit base wine or cider. A dash of raspberry syrup makes it even more enjoyable, and bery refreshing. Imagine drinking one or a couple of these on a the patio on a sunny day. Perfection. Berliner Weisse will most likely never score the most pounts in beer tastings. This is a niche product and once you find out it‘s for you, then you‘ll enjoy this Berliner from Leipzig.

L: Very pale straw yellow. Foamy and active. Cloudy.

S: Soured wheat. Exactly what it should smell like.

T: Nice. Like the can says, a balance of tartness, fruitness, and sweetness.

F: There's more to it than "BAM, SOUR!" It's sour, salty, citrusy, then ends up sweet. The can conditioning and smoothness of the oats play a factor as well.

O: Magnificent.

Another 3-year-old bottle from what appears to be the best clearance shelf in a 50-mile radius

Very cloudy dull orange-yella, no head to speak of. Smells like water and lemon. Taste is on point - the acidicy has mellowed out leaving a creamy sour-lemon white-bread-malt sipper with a touch of hop funk that pairs with the sourness.

Very enjoyable, I'll probably go back and buy the remaining bottles

It is so stinkin' hot & humid tonight that I just don't feel like anything more than something light in ABV. I figure that if nothing else, it is another chip away at The Bottle Backlog here at Chez Woody.

From the Bottle: "Brewed in the tradition of the 'Berliner Style' Weisse"; "Bayerischer Bahnhof's interpretation of the 'Berliner Style' Weisse is a slightly softer, more mellow version with a beautiful balance of tartness, fruitiness, and sweetness."

I did some in-bottle agitation, followed by a short settling time, before Pop!ping the cap. Nothing untoward occurred on the Pop! so I went with a C-line pour, causing two-plus fingers of fizzy, foamy, bone-white head to rise up and quickly fall away to wisps. Color was a cloudy Straw-Yellow (SRM = > 2, < 4). Nose had a lemony, slightly white wine-like vinousness. The taste was lighter than most beers in the style that I have tried. It was lightly tart, lemony, but also with a green apple tartness & a grape-y vinousness. I was under impressed, especially at the price point. This was a very light interpretation of the style that would not require any syrup, if I was into adding syrups to Berliner Weisses. Finish was dry, tart & refreshing, but I just did not feel like I got my money's worth. YMMV.

Clear on pour. Nose is of sour apple candy....slightly. Taste at first is bitter, but then a bit of sweetness. Finish is very dry as it should be. Good tasting beer

This is my 20th Berliner Weiss. This indicates two things to me.
First, more American crafters have been making this style for longer than I thought. (Indeed, G&G's is the #16 most rated and it is only the second German brewer... and the style is not even indigenous to Leipzig where G&G brews.)
Second, I will go to great lengths to avoid hoppy beers after playing summer tennis... even drinking 20 of a style I do not like. The Berliner Weisse is refreshing and the low alcohol does not induce naps.

While G&G's Looks sickly and Smells average for the style, It Tastes slightly better and gives me a good tart pucker (it is the sour puckers that bother me.) While well-crafted, there are many good reasons to add the syrup and G&G cannot avoid them. Although without the syrup, G&G's finishes nice and dry.

One and done. Next, I get woodruff or raspberry.

This brand is tart, but not overly puckering like Berliner Kindl. Pours very light golden with no head, Aroma is sour apple, white grape, citrus. Taste is tart fruit, with abrupt, dry finish. Wish I had a "schuss" for some additional flavor.
