Poured from 11.2 oz bottle into a Duvel tulip glass.

Appearance: Wow. What the hell just happened? I read previous reviews and was anticipating a lot of foam, but even having a big glass ready wasn't enough to catch the explosion of foam. I lost about half the beer. Pretty ridiculous carbonation. Color is a dark and cloudy brown with a little bit of sediment. Way too much tan foam. Lots of lacing.

Smell: Sweet dark roasted malts with big hints of dark chocolate and coffee. Lots of molasses and bready yeast. Also some smoke, vanilla, and a hint of dark fruit. Light hint of earthy hops. Smells very robust like an American imperial stout.

Taste: A sweet and roasty taste of dark malts. Some roasted caramel and notes of chocolate, coffee, molasses, and vanilla. Sweet , bready, banana like yeast. Also some smoke and a light hint of dark fruit and grassy hops. An interesting and nice tasting mix.

Mouthfeel: Light to medium bodied with a very heavy amount of carbonation. Creamy and very slick. Thinner than you would expect from a bigger porter. Way too much carbonation as expected from the bottle opening. No noticeable alcohol heat.

Overall: There are some pretty good flavors going on here but the carbonation issues are setting it back. Nice use of malts and yeast.

Bottle purchased at Green's on Ponce in Atlanta.

Pours one shade from black with a half-finger off-white head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving decent lacing.

Smells of funk - leather mostly - with solid amount of lightly tart dark fruits. All of this is backed by moderate amounts of dark malt aromas with hints of roast and unsweetened chocolate.

Tastes similar to how it smells, though slightly more one-dimensional. Lightly roasted malt flavors kick things off and are joined quickly by large amounts of funk and moderately tart dark fruits. Midway through the sip semi-sweet chocolate flavors come into play, fading out into a moderately bitter ending, leaving tart dark fruit flavors lingering on the palate.

Mouthfeel is OK. It's got nice carbonation however the thickness is a bit on the thin side.

Drinkability is very good. I finished my glass quickly and could easily have a few more.

Overall I thought this beer was infected after my first sip until I had the chance to read the label. A very interesting beer with a lot going on - well worth a shot.

11.2 oz. bottle poured into a tulip glass.

Appearance-Black, and almost totally impermeable to light. Impossible to determine clarity because it's totally opaque. Giant foamy tan mocha head (nearly leaps out of the bottle), with good retention and awesome lacing.

Aroma-First up are funky, sour yeast aromas-brett character, leathery, barnyardy, and horse blankety. Also some spice phenolics (cloves? pepper?). Underneath the yeast aromas are toasted malt and luscious bittersweet chocolate. There's an awful lot going on here.

Flavor-Like the aroma, lots to say about this one. Light tartness and some brett funk, with leathery/horsey flavors. Wild yeast flavors melt to chocolate, burnt toast, and roast flavors. The finish is dry, with lingering wild yeast and chocolate flavors that carry long into the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel-Medium body, with moderately high carbonation. SUPER Silky and quite creamy from the head. Simply luscious.

This is quite interesting to say the least. I scored it relatively high because I think it's a well crafted beer-it certainly does what it intends to do. I'm just still not sure how I feel about the sour/wild yeasts and porter flavors/aromas coming together. Pretty good, but certainly not for anyone who's not prepared for a little shock.

Poured from 11.2oz bottle into snifter.
No bottled-on date.

Aroma: Wait, is this an Oud Bruin??? Unmistakable earthy, almost dill-pickle-like, tart brett aroma. Some underlying milk chocolate, brown sugar, and dark cherry. I'm giving this one a 2.5 because it's not clear whether the "bugs" are intentional.

Appearance: The hiss that escaped from the bottle when I opened the cap signaled trouble. I poured as gently as possible down the side of the glass, but wound up w/ 1/8 glass of beer, and 7/8 of foam. I waited a good 3-5 min. for the foam to settle to a dense mousse-like 3 finger tan collar. Dark brown body w/ a tinge of ruby on the edges.

Flavor: Crisp and slightly acidic. Dilluted chocolate soda comes to mine? Some hoppy bitterness is present through the middle, as well as a prominent brett component. Bitterness rises at the end, then quickly disappears for a relatively clean finish.

Mouthfeel: Biting CO2, which was expected based on the hiss that came from the bottle. Light body--especially for the style. The carbonation, unfortunately, is a bit overwhelming, and interferes with one's ability to pick up all the flavors that are going on the beer.

Overall: Regarding recommending this one... To someone who likes sours and would like to try something a bit off-the-wall, sure. To someone who likes baltic porters, or wants to try a beer that's representative of the style, absolutely not. The beer was interesting for me--I'll give it that. I'm not sure, though, whether this infection was intentional or not...

First Porter from Germany that I can recall. "Leipziger Doppel Porter"

Voluminous head of billowing foam, charged by the Brett, creating a dense head of sparkling soapy bubbles in the glass. Plenty of lacing all around. Reminded me of Jolly Pumpkin a bit.

Nose is subdued, berries, currants, husky chocolate malt, graham cracker, minerals, musty basement. Not especially appealing, or representative of things to come.

Extremely earthy, leathery, big dark chocolate presence, some coffee, minor plum note in the aftertaste. Rich taste, dry and bitter, no sweetness really. Some herbs and spices add to the mystique, clover, cardamom and nutmeg seem to be the closest resemblance. Oddly the foam tastes more herbally bitter and metallic, not recommended. Full bodied with medium levels of carbonation.

Unique and worth a try with an open mind.

Appearance. Pours black with a huge, bubbly tan head.

Smell. Coffee, sea water, some roasty malts and a little funky yeast.

Taste. Roasty malts, burnt toast, earthy funk and a bit of chocolate and molasses. Not too shabby.

Mouthfeel. Medium-light body with srong carbonation.

Overall. Interesting porter, as promised by the guy at Beermongers in Portland when he saw me grabbing the Berliner Style Weisse. Thanks for the suggestion buddy!

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color porter with a large bright brown color head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma consists of roasted malt with loads of black chocolate notes. Taste is dominated by dry roasted malt with loads of rich black chocolates notes with very light Brett notes also noticeable. Body is full with really nice creamy texture with great carbonation and no apparent alcohol. I really enjoyed that one with nice creamy black chocolate notes but I can’t say that the Brett notes were very intense or easily identifiable.

I had to try this just based on the style. It's an "old style" English baltic porter with brett. Under the name of the brewery, it say "Special Edition of Historic Styles".

This one is going to take awhile to pour. Upon my first try, I got about an inch and a half of black liquid with the rest of the snifter being swallowed by a spongy, sudsy light khaki head reminiscent of a root beer float. After about fifteen minutes, I was finally able to get the entirety of the bottle's contents into my snifter. It poured a jet black with ridiculous amount of spongy, dark khaki head. The aromas are where this gets really interesting. It smells like a Wild Baltic. Imagine all of the barnyard funk and spice mixed with the smoke, oak, and coffee of a baltic. What a thought! As a big fan of both styles, this beer smells delicious. The flavors are very interesting as well. Everything considered, it's pretty good. The reviewer before me nailed it. At first it's a great deal of leather and brett funk before going into this sweet dark malt that leads into coffee and cream. The funk is pretty subdued but is left in the aftertaste and just leaves you wanting more. The mouthfeel is strange too. The second it hits your palate it's almost like it foams up again before settling down. It kind of lightens up in body and goes down very smoothly. This is a very good beer. I would definitely drink this at a pub or bar. It's definitely worth the try and very interesting. It's one of those beers that makes you stop and think about what you're taking in.

Sidenote: I wish Pepe Nero would've managed this.

Black with thin tan head. A bit of a collar on the way down. The nose has roast and mild chocolate. Flavor is similar and fairly dry. More chocolate as it warms. Some slight cherry in there as well. Medium body and semi-dry finish. Decent.

Looks like an interesting beer, so why not give it a shot.

WTF!!!! It erupted like crazy, one of the worst gushers I've seen since my early homebrewing days. Just unloaded all of its beer in carbonation form all over the floor, after filling my entire glass of head in about 5 seconds it overflowed onto the floor and everywhere between here and my sink. When all was said and done I got about 1/4 of a glass of beer. Horrible!!!! And this was right out of the fridge, so nice and cold.

The pillowly overflowing head itself is laced with sediment and yeast, darker mocha colored head, no chance for not having ridiculous messy lacing, and the beer itself is a putrid mud slop brown colored plop of what I wanted to call a beer.

Nose... well 15 minutes after waiting for the head to settle, literally (and that included cleaning up the mess). Nose is mostly yeast and I think infection, some wild contaminate that seems to have destroyed the beer, but I'm going to continue reviewing cause f-this thing! Under the infection brings a bit of toasted malt, brown syrupy malts with molasses and dark wheat bock fruity like aromas, and a hint of mocha, some roast and burnt aromas, light spicy hops, and yeast yeast yeast.

Taste is much less infected thankfully, and the more I nose it the more I think it's more of a bad and unhappy yeast aroma than infection. The taste brings plenty of dark malts, burnt roast, burnt coffee, baker's chocolate, burnt chocolate, chalky, little caramel and molasses, light sweet nougat like creaminess, dark chocolate, etc. Earthy and spicy hops come through as well with a decently big bitterness, spicy chewy hops that linger for a while on the finish. The finish is dry and bitter, long lingering spicy hops, some bitterness from charred roast, and hint of very dark chocolate.

Mouth is med bodied, chunkies, decent carb surprisingly now that it's all left.

Overall, well hard to tell. It started horribly like infection, but that didn't seem to come out at all on the taste, and the more I nosed it the more that seemed to disappear. Maybe something did get in but the overpowering beer itself overpowered it, but I can't forgive the huge eruption that blanketed my room in super dark staining beer, and only left me with about 1/4 of a glass, and nevermind the yeast chunkies everywhere.

Extremely frothy and active when poured, and took about 5 minutes to settle to a drinkable state. Nice though; nutty and malty and good, although a little closer to a dunkel than a porter in terms of heaviness and consistency.

11.2 oz bottle. Very rustic labeling, I like it.

It pours a semi- dark brown with an uncontrollably huge head that looks spectacular. It recedes to walls upon walls of lacing.

The smell is unique. It has a ton of citrus an coriander, it almost smells like a wild witbier. There is also some cocoa and smoke.

It is fruity, malty, sour, and smoky. It is an intriguing combo. The orange and coriander come through in the taste along with some bitterness from the roasted malts and some dark fruits.

It is smooth and delicious, with enough pucker to keep it interesting.

Had this sitting in my fridge for a week before opening and half of it foamed out of the top lost about 1/2 of the bottle. After the foam eruption i poured it into a pint glass.

a - after the foamsplosion it pours a dark brown

s - clean smell of coffee, vanilla, raisins and tiny hits of tropical fruits

t - taste was malty and chocolaty with tiny hints of coffee sweetness

m - this had a great mouthfeel of a porter that has good carbonation but drinks smooth.

o - i would drink it again but with the foamsplosion was a big turnoff but the carbonation and the style of beer was fun to drink.

Black in color with an oversized khaki colored head (at least 3 or 4 fingers worth). Kind of a funky and fruity nose to this, presumably from the Brett. Lots of apple (particularly green apple) and a hint of lemon peel. Still decently roasty, but not much in the way of sweetness. The flavor has a bit more sweetness, perhaps molasses, and a fair amount of roasted malt character. As with the aroma, lots of fruity notes and a mild earthiness. Really a strange beer.

Really nice porter!!! I liked this one at the the Grape and Gourmet Thursday beer tasting and bought a bottle. Poured into a pint glass from a stubby 11.2 oz bottle. Huge tan, frothy head with excellent retention. There were patches of thick lacing, but the head went down so slowly, I didnt really notice the lacing until I emptied the glass.

The smell and taste had the usual roasted malt, but there was also a strong aroma/taste of funky or Belgian yeast. The combination works great, making this a very flavorable beer.

Mouthfeel i just right for a porter, crisp, fairly light and nicely carbonated.

Overall, a very good beer.

On tap at The Lion's Pride.
Came to the table a solid black color with a small bubbly tan head that dissipates to a cap. Smells of roast and chocolate with an earthy spicy edge to it. I can't find very much funk in the nose. Flavors of roast, caramel, and chocolate with hints of tart cherry and an earthy menthol thing going on in the background. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation and a roasty chalky mouthfeel. Its a decent enough porter with a hint of funk that hides in the background but you know its there. I almost wanted more funk or none at all, its in a weird middle ground.

The beer comes in a dark brown, black color.

The aroma has roasted malt and chocolate, but then also a strong amount of Brett and funk.

The flavor follows of sweet caramel, roasted dark malts, molasses, and coffee. Then there's some yeasty notes along with a dry funky Brett finish. Light to medium body.

A quite interesting brew.

Had on tap at Rustico in Ballston VA, draft.

App: pours a pure black with a egg shell head, clings to the edges, not completely top covering.

Aroma: interesting sweet and fruity notes with a bit of roasty-ness to it.

Taste: the brett adds an interesting leathery flavor to the beer. Also has a bit of dark fruit. Besides that not much else going on. Brett is an odd addition to this beer.

Mouthfeel: low carbonation, easy to drink.

Don't expect to see this again, so I was happy to have it. Unfortunately I don't know if brettanomyces is a great choice for this beer.

11.2oz stubby brown bottle poured into a pair if snifters. This brew appears a dark brown with a billowing head 4+ fingers strong with a dark tan coloration. The head slowly fades holding with large bubbles all around. Some brown clarity is seen faintly through the edges. Patchy lace clings to the glass.

The smell of this brew is initially lemon-like, dry earthy notes of Brett and some sulfur. There is some sweetness a bit like chocolate and caramel malt. Funky and more earthy and dirty with Brett as it warms up.

The taste is earthy and dry with a leathery Brett quality. Some hints of lemony tartness and sulfur are present throughout. Chocolate malt is evident with some notes of coffee and toffee to earthy dark molasses. Some herbal hops evolve and keep the brew well rounded.

This is a medium bodied brew with an excessive amount of carbonation. The 7% abv is well integrated and provides for a very solid offering. I really dig brewers who attempt to recreate "old world" styles of beer. I was expecting this one to be a little more harsh than it was. Perhaps that's why I enjoyed it so much. If you approach this like it's a typical Baltic porter you might be unsatisfied, however as-is it is a pleasant interpretation.

This oddity is a Baltic porter brewed with brettanomyces. Served at Belmont Station in Portland.

Dark but thin-looking — fairly clear and watery at the edges, with black fading into lighter oak. An expansive, creamy head of beach sand-colored froth plants itself for a long time, only leaving after painting the sides of the glass in full sheets of lace.

Odd aroma. It’s almost like a chocolate-covered raisin — or a raisin-covered chocolate. Big dark fruits merge: sweet raisin, strawberry, bubble gum. Touches of bitter dark chocolate and mild funk.

Smoky, dry flavor. Clean and mildly smoky in the front, though the swallow brings a subtle sweet dark fruit note and even more smooth smoke. A touch of sweetness and funk from the brett, along with a weird, almost Belgian yeast note. A hint of raisin and oats. Spicy black pepper lingers on the tongue after the swallow.

The creamy medium body holds together very well as it moves. Just a touch of tingly carbonation.

An odd beer. Mild but drinkable.

A bottle to the dome in a St. Bernardus glass. Use a wide mouth glass when pouring this, because it is a gusher, even very cold. I did not lose any liquid, just pour it slow and steady on a tilt in a wide mouth immediately after opening. SLOW DOWN.

Porticus looks really dark in the glass boasting a dark brown bordering on black color. The firm cap is more like a mountain of foam of dark tan with much strength and firmness leaving big notches on the way down. Smell is roasty with some nuts and a big dose of brett from the addition. Old world porter quality in taste with big malty appeal with mad brett backing it. Not entirely funky, this is a nicely mixed drink. Nuts with roasted malt, some old world quality, some roast, faint fruit, with some coffee flavor within. Feel is at about medium with a long lasting finish. It's carbed up nice, perhaps too much and I would have no problem taking down a glass or two of it, easy. Finishes on the dry side, and does not stick on the tounge much except for the brett. At this young stage, this is damn near perfect, and in my experience, aging Baltic Porters with Brett does not turn out so great most of the time, so drink up.

Had on tap at Farmers' Cabinet, Center City Philadelphia. Poured into a tulip glass, this beer is very dark, near black, with a sticky, two finger head that just sits there, a staring contest, like watching a pot of water boil... it never goes down! Ever. Nose is tart, roasty, acidic. Flavors more of same, part roast malt and part brett. Lingering citric flavors with hints of bramble fruit. Not sour, per se, but close. Mouthfeel is full and creamy. Delish!

11.2 oz bottle poured into Allagash chalice.

A: Bottle gushes upon opening; steady amount of foam continues to snake out 5 minutes after sitting opened. Pours an insanely carbonated dark brown with sienna highlights. 5-finger caramel head builds with vigor, leaving much lacing on the glass but making this impossible difficult to pour. Ridiculous retention, though.

S: Caramel, toffee and peanut butter up front. Dark fruits in the middle, along with mild alcohol notes. Smells "chewy."

T: Bitter chocolate and lightly-roasted malt carry into what basically amounts to no center or finish. Boozy. Definition on "one note.". and a massive let down.

M: Over carbonated beyond belief; extremely thin.

O: After losing half of this beer to my countertop, I was already a bit put off. Coupled with the lack of complexity, I can't recommend this beer.

Spend your $4.49 USD//11.2 fl. oz. elsewhere.

The only information I've been able to find on this beer is that it is a strong porter brewed to mimic an old style. It is finished with brettanomyces. Porter was probably a little "sour" 250 years ago, deliberate or not. I think it's cool that someone is recreating an old school London brown ale, though it's weird that it is a German brewery and not a British one.

Begins with a colossal light brown head that requires the bottle to be poured in increments. Think Jolly Pumpkin or Westmalle Tripel. Thick belts of lace cling even at the top of the glass, and the body is almost black.

Very interesting spice and funk on the nose, followed by coffee, salt, and esters. It just smells old, like an antique store or a disused log cabin.

I can see how the taste would throw some people off, but taken in the traditional context with an open mind, I think it's great. The Brett and leather overwhelm at first, but give way to sweet brown malt, bitter chocolate/coffee, cream, and earth. The bitter quality is like an aperitif, and leaves me wanting more. The barnyard element is restrained.

This is a beer I would order several rounds of at a pub amongst friends.

Also, I think incredible things would happen if this were paired with the right chocolates.

Appearanace: After a large eruption of foam it turns out the beer is black as night with a beige head that is real thick.

Aroma: Dark roasted coffee, Smokiness, lots of yeasty bread notes. Wisps of musty roasted malts with floral hops in the tail end.

Taste: Very smooth mouthfeel. A light dryness on the palate. Dark roasted coffee, figs, dry floral hops, bits of woodiness and smokiness.

Notes: I like the dry finish this one has it's not too much nor to little and drinkable. Cheers.
