One of my favorite beers. Mouth-puckeringly sour, refreshing as hell and packed full as flavor for something at 3%. The light fruit flavors combine well with the wheat and grass, creating a citrus and grain sour bomb. While more intense than your average Berliner Style Weiss, it's still the peak of the style. A: Foams up like champagne with a 1” head and then immediately disappears leaving a headless cloudy straw liquid.
S: Has a sour wheat aroma laced with lemon and fruit.
T: Very tart, almost like an effervescent lemonade with a touch of beer in it. Leaves a long lingering tart aftertaste.
F: It is very light bodied and effervescent.

11.2 oz bottle. Totally raging carbonation. Very audible mountainous head that eventually dissipates and mutes. Ghostly hazy straw color. Bright citrus floral smell - all yeast and bacteria aroma. First sip is awesome,O obviously lactic acid that coats the mouth and doesn't linger too long. Aftertaste is distinct cherry pie Brettanomyces Lambicus flavor. Tartness is just a bit more that normal for a berliner-weizen. Lactobacillus doesn't get lost though. Wheat body is depleted in fermentation, thin and dry as expected. But the wheat flavor isn't lost. This beer holds up amazingly for a 3%er. Kind of a tooth melter, my teeth hurt after drinking this one. But very worth while. This beer kicks ass. (704 characters)

pours a sparking hazy light golden color with a big three finger head of white that clears the top of the glass and settles down lightly to a thin coating along the top. lots of carbonation bubbling up throughout the session.

aroma is light sour and acidic tartness. green apples with a mix of light hay and sour grapes. simply remarkable. as it warms the crisp and clean sour flavor really starts to come through quite nicely as the light nature of it really becomes apparent as you take the first sip. remarkable that this much flavor is coming through. crisp, clean, refreshing and light the nature of this throws me for a loop, as if it simply could not get any better. crisp green apples dominate the flavor with a light grassy note coming in the finish along with an amazing dryness. (790 characters)

Review ##1400! Based on my review of a bottle I had awhile back I have always been wanting a large growler of this… Well, GBX delivered on this in the form of a one gallon growler. OH SNAP! Served from growler into a Green Man snifter. Poured golden yellow with a one finger pure white head that subsided to a minimal amount slowly. Maintained decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, lemon peel, earth, tart, funk, and subtle bleu cheese. The flavor was of sweet malt, lemon zest, lemon rine, tart, sour, earth, and funk. It had a light feel on the palate with high carbonation. Overall this is a great brew. I’m really glad it was raining all day so I could sit down and consume this entire growler in one day. At 3% ABV, this one definitely packs a punch on flavor and aroma. This Berliner definitely brings the goods for the style. If you have not had this brew before you need to fix that as soon as possible. I suggest trying it on tap as it was actually a lot more intense on the flavor aspect than the bottle. Just plain good.

Note: DO NOT drink an entire growler of this beer in a one-day session. You will regret it based on the pH imbalance in your stomach. You have been warned! (1,229 characters)

Smells like your typical Berliner Weiss. Innocent with a hint of citrus and wheat.

Taste blows me away. Sour, Tart lemon that puckers my cheeks, in a refreshing and give me more kind of way. Incredible.

I knocked the bottle from the top shelf of the fridge to the tile floor last night, whilst rummaging for some carrot cake. This is a review of the spilled brew that I drank off the floor with a straw. Just kidding, thankfully the bottle was strong like bull and hard like 'rock-wiler'.

A - This is a very hazy lemonade-looking brew, with quite a large head for the style. The head recedes after a couple of minutes, leaving a only faint wisps of froth. The apprearance is generally right-on, but the color is a bit unappealing.

S - From the moment I open the cap, the funk emanates prodigiously. Sharp cheese notes (Grana Padano) are particularly notable. There is also plenty of sock and unsweet apple in the nose.

T - The taste is not as funky as the smell, for one thing. There is an appreciable dryness that is a prominent feature of the flavor profile as it applies to the whole of the flavor components. There are notes of apple, white grape, hay and grain; all are expressed with a minimum of sweetness. The acidity is moderate, especially given the style. Overall, it tastes very good.

M - The feel is very nearly inextricable from the taste; there is a bright effervescence that is omnipresent in the brew.

A - Pours a very hazy golden-yellow color with a finger of frothy white head. The head fades down fairly slowly leaving behind some nice lacing.

S - Aroma is a mix of lemon zest, grass, funky, wheat, with some good Brett and farmhouse smells.

T - Starts off with some strong tart and sour lemon and Brett with some wheat. Through the middle, more tart and acidic lemon comes through with some stronger funk and Brett flavor. The finish is a mix of strong acidic and tart lemon alongside Brett, farmhouse flavors, and grains.

M - Light bodied with moderate-plus carbonation. Feels smooth with a very tart, funky, and acidic finish.

D - Very drinkable. Powerfully funky and tart, but extremely tasty. Really nice complexity. (726 characters)

A - Cloudy straw-yellow with a huge foamy white head that has surprisingly good retention, and recedes to a thick cap. Really nice!
S - Amazing aromas of green apple, lemon juice, crisp wheat, and hay with a nice tartness and a bit of earthy "funk". Phenomenal.
T - Very crisp flavors of green apple, lemon juice, wheat, and funky Brett. There's a really nice earthy, "minerally" quality that lingers on the palate for some time.
M - Light-bodied with a thin mouth-feel and incredibly sharp carbonation. Carbonation may be a touch high, it really scrubs the tongue and prevents some of the flavor from getting through. Still, very crisp and refreshing.
O - An amazingly complex take on one of my favorite oddball styles, it's ridiculous how much flavor is coaxed out of a 3% ABV beer! (890 characters)

330ml bottle poured into a tulip glass

A: This beer is very highly carbonated to say the least. After being poured extremely carefully, over two fingers of very lively head developed. Carbonation is very evident bubbling up from the bottom of the glass, as well. Pours a slightly hazy very light golden color. Retention is quite good. This is a great looking beer.

S: Smells of brett and lactic acid. Quite dry with musty barnyard aromas. Very citrusy with light wheat on the background. Clean and vibrant. I get some yogurt-y aromas in here as well.

T: Maybe the most refreshing beer I've ever had. Extremely dry with a good mixture of acidity, citrus, and light wheat flavors. The brett flavor is minimal, which is good for such a low ABV beer.

M: Extremely light bodied with a ton of carbonation. I wish the carbonation was toned down a touch, this was very sharp on the tongue.

O: A very good Berliner Weisse, very dry with a good amount of tart flavor mixed with wheat and citrus. (990 characters)

On tap at the Brasserie V in Madison.

Poured into a Bayerischer Bahnhof Berliner Style Weiss glass. Pours a slightly hazy, pale yellow color. Develops a nice 1/2 inch, white colored head, that is thick and creamy with great retention.

Aroma is fairly typical of a Berliner Weiss, with some nice tart fruit aromatics and slight graininess, but there is also a nice barnyard funk from the brett, adding some great character, well above many other Berliner Weiss' I've had.

The flavor is incredibly light and delicate and quite refreshing. Some nice, tart, green fruit character, even a hint of lemon-like citrus. Some well balanced, grain flavors followed immediately by the unmistakable, funky character of the brettanomyces. Just incredibly smooth and easy drinking.

The body is very light with an effervescent level of carbonation. It truly is impressive the amount of flavors a skilled brewer can pack into such a small beer. I challenge anyone who thinks a beer with less than 5% ABV can't be packed with flavor to try this beer. It's just so delicious, easy drinking and just an overall pleasant experience. And the best part is, I can have 3 or 4 or 5 and hardly feel a buzz! :) (1,188 characters)

11.2 oz bottle.

It pours out as foam, expect it to take a looong time to pour this one The foam is bright white and firm. The color of the beer is marvelous, almost like a sparkling white wine.

The smell is phenomenal. It is aidic and citrusy, but lightly so. There is a hint of metallic smell but it works. It has a bit of standard yeast and wheat smells. It smells refreshing. And that is good because I went from 30 degree Wisconsin yesterday to 70 degree sunny Atlanta today.

The taste is also refreshing. It has a slight citrus acid bite and a small hinting of funk but nothing overpowering. The weissbier part of this is delectable. It is light, airy, smooth, and easy drinking.

If only this stuff was mass bottled and sold for a cheap price, it would utterly destroy bud light. (789 characters)

Thanks to coreyfmcdonald for hooking me up with a couple bottles of this.

A stubby 11.2 oz brown bottle poured into a pint glass. Upon cracking the cap, it left out a loud hiss that immediately produced a swelling formation of large bubbles inside the neck of the bottle that slowly started to creep up to the opening so I slowly started the pour down the side of my pint glass. About an inch of brew settles in the glass underneath a mountainous 4+ fingers worth of cotton white fluff. A constant stream of bubbles erupts to the surface and in a short amount of time there is less than a finger of white uneven, cratered head sitting across the top of the brew. Unfortunately the violent eruption of carbonation releasing from suspension causes the thick layer of sediment on the bottom of the bottle to get dispersed throughout the solution. It takes 3 slow pours to finally get the majority of the brew out of the bottle and into my glass. Now, here we go, but first an unusual sensory experience to take note of. This brew is loud... yes loud, it pops and fizzes quite audibly as the head recedes down to about a finger of large bubbly head. The color of this brew is like fresh lemonade. It is a light clouded yellow cream color with quite a visually moving head that is still trying to put on a show after the initial surge of huge froth has gone. The surface of the solution seemingly boils as the carbonation is released. A swirl reforms a finger of white head that again presents the audible pops and fizzes.

This is a complex, super enjoyable aroma coming out of this little guy. Initially it smells like yogurt with a lightly sweet scent that is reminiscent of original pink bubblegum mixed with fruit somewhat like pear but not quite as pronounced as other examples offer. It also contains a funky aspect that is quite sour smelling mingled with sulfur, lemons, grass (well more earthy than grassy) and wheat. No one single component of the nose overpowers the other, it is all well blended, integrated and enjoyable. The taste is tart like lemons mixed with a lightly souring aspect that is a little funky and slightly different from what the nose led on. A hint of sulfur creeps in mixed with a flavoring of greek yogurt. Throughout the light body of this beer is a constant reminder of a fresh grain taste that is like wheat/cereal grains. It leaves a lingering taste of lemon inside the mouth coupled with a yeastiness that provides a lingering tartness. Excellent.

This is a light bodied brew that is a little thicker in the feel for the typical berliner weisse (pushing medium bodied possibly due to the extra yeast in suspension making it feel creamier.) It has an excessively aggressive amount of carbonation that is a touch too much even for this style which is expected to be lively. It is tart enough that it creates the minor puckering quality that yogurt has as it seeming strips the moisture out of your mouth. It finishes crisp and refreshing, this style is the epitome of summertime refreshment and this offering/take on the style is awesome. Drinkable as all hell, I actually had to open a second bottle just to finish the review because I had the first glass gone before I even wrote anything about the taste. This lambicus example offers a unique opportunity to experience the different types of brettanomyces. Instead of the typical funked, horsey barnyard notes, this type of brett offers up more of a unique sourness with light fruit notes that provide an awesome addition to this style of brew. Well done, it was my intension to drink and share a couple of these before setting some in the cellar to try and forget about to see how the brett further developes...that obviously isn't going to happen now. I like this beer too much and it's not going to last long. I need to get some more of these. (3,835 characters)

Pours a hazy bright yellow with a thin white head. Smell is very tart, almost like a wild, but with some more regular light German beer flavor lingering in the background. Taste is very light and tart, very refreshing, almost like a cross between beer and lemonade, but not in the terrible way that combination actually tastes. Mouthfeel is very light-bodied with high carbonation. Overall, this beer is really fantastic, basically a perfect berliner. (578 characters)

Thanks to starrdogg for sharing this beer, I'm digging the Berliners as of late...

The beer pours like you'd expect for a Berliner, very light straw yellow and has a bubbly fluff head that dies to a very white ring. Very clean cleanish look.

The smell is nice, has a almost wild like smell though it is tempered by a definite German light malt bill as well. Just smells basically how a very tart Berliner should smell, very yeasty and very nice. lots of sour mash brett to this guy.

The taste is very complex, and quite tart. It has many layers of flavor for only being 3%, some nice fruity tart berry like notes and also a bit of wood, and then a clean yeasty taste as well. Has a very clean malt character too that is a bit sweet to compliment the sour very nicely. Lots of lemon, in a good way.

Very nice feel for a Berliner, effervescent and well carbonated. Very easy to drink, I could drink down lots of this and not think twice.

A great beer, very nice overall. If you like tart easy drinking beers, this one is a winner. (1,034 characters)

overall: one of my favorite berliners. had such a nice balance between tartness and malt backbone. could drink this all day long. Wish it was easier to get. But I like the addition of brett into this beer, rather then just using lactobacillus. Nice touch.

On tap at kraftwork. Nice another berliner wiss. I'm always looking for this style.

A- comes to me with a nice finger or so of brilliant white frothy head that settles after the first sip to leave a few wisps on top a sudsy ring. Hazy pale yellow in color with some sweet bubbles holding on the side of the glass.

S- crisp bright lemon zest and juice with a lightly sweet yet clean wheat hit. Grassy and fresh like a lawn after the spring rain.

T- light tart open with a sour and bite but never over baring. Crisp and fresh lemon juice with a very simple yet well balance wheat sweetness.

M- light body and carb with a super kickass pucker that goes far enough to get the juices flowing but not too far that you need to pull the drawls from yo ass.

O- this brew is tits. One of my favorites of the style to date. Ill be having a few of these. Philly is the best beer town. (882 characters)

Comes out a cloudy yellow, thin white head, no more than 1/4" in depth. Not much in the way of lacing or retention. Aroma was lovely, one of, it not the most tart berlinner weisse I've ever come across. Lots of lemon.

Taste, wow, almost downright sour, definitely tart, yet so light on its feet. Drank this at Sour Sunday at Triple Rock in February, can't help but wonder what this would be like in Northern Nevada on a hot summer 104 degree day around the pool. If you like lemon, green apple, brett, tartness, light bodied yet plenty bready beers, this is where its at.

I would pay a shitton to buy 4 or 6 packs of this. It would rival SNPA as my go to beer in the summer. I think I like it more than even Hottenroth (gasp!). (730 characters)

Pours a bright golden straw color with some haze, bubbly and prickly white head. Scent leads with a big push of tart, acidic and earthy funk, took a while before light notes of sweet breads and faint candied lemony citrus came through. Taste brings bold tart and acidic notes, combines with moderate earthy funkiness, fresh dried grain and hay, light fruitiness with some candied lemon and a touch of white grape. Lighter side of medium bodied, bubbly and refreshing, bone dry. Overall a fantastic surprise that exceeded any expectations, unique take on style and impressively refreshing despite the boldness. A: Pours a hazy lemon aid color with almost not head at all.  The little bit of head that fights to stay afloat as you pour doesn't last more than a second or two.  A steady stream of bubbles rises from the center of the glass and mesmerizes me as I stare at the glass.  No lacing at all.

S: Strong Brett up front creating a funky, farmy, earthy aroma that is extremely pleasant.  Citrusy as well, but it's somewhat muted that smells a little like lemon-lime soda.  Overall, the aroma is a little more subdued that I was expecting, but what's there is really, really nice. 

T: The initial sip brings a pretty good punch of lemon tartness and a bit of vinegar that mellows only slightly with other sips.  Remains quite tart throughout the entire glass.  Brett comes out very nicely, again creating a nice funkiness with some grass and straw.  Finishes with some lemon zest and earth. 

M: Medium bodied with a good bit of carbonation.  Quite tart and tingly on the tongue.  Finishes pretty dry. 

D: An amazing sour berliner weisse that doesn't disappoint at all.  Very drinkable, yet, I want to sip smaller and smaller sips as the glass empties.  Extremely tasty and tart and an excellent little sour beer.  I'm going back to the beer store I saw these at in SC to clean them out tomorrow.  Fantastic! (1,320 characters)

Hazy white gold with a white head that pops and fizzes. Nose is the amazing and beautiful pineapple upside-down cake scent that comes from the mix of wheat and brett lambicus. Taste is tart, mildly sweet preserved lemon on pineapple upside-down. Awesome. Touch of flint mineral/well stone in the back end. Lemonade like body. I love love love this version. A: Pours a pretty pale gold/straw colour with a small, but aggressive head. The head disappears almost immediately (hence the low score), but still bubbles aggressively. Most unusual.

S: Funk, lemons, wet grass. Smells like Spring!

T: Now things are really looking up! Wonderful sweet-tart flavour! Lemons, funk, grass. Strong white grape notes. Kinda like a really dry sparkling white wine (in appearance as well, given the lack of head). Really tart, but with just enough sweetness to balance it out nicely. Really really really freaking good! The brett is present, but not dominant. The lacto comes out much stronger. I wonder what this would do with some age? Ultimately, this is a style I really enjoy and this is the best tasting example I've come across by a wide margin. Hence, the 5.

M: In spite of the lack of head, the carbonation is quite ample, which works well for this beer. Dry. Very dry. Bone dry. I like! Light, zesty, and lively.

O: I was a bit weary based on the look and smell of this beer, but the taste and mouthfeel are just spot on, and that's far more important to me. This is a perfect late Spring/early Summer beer. Refreshing, but still complex and interesting. Plus, at 3%, you can drink in the Summer heat without worrying too much about getting wasted or dehydrated. I'm definitely going to pick up a couple more of these while I can. (1,370 characters)

Tiny bottle poured into my CCB tulip.

A: Clear as can be light yellow, really almost white. A huge amount of foam is produced from a smooth pour.

A: Huge nose for a 3% brew. Funk and horseblanket, with notes of grapefruit, lemon and citrus. An herbal quality from the hops is a plesant detraction from the funk.

T: Again, does not dissapoint. Big notes of horseblanket and citrus fruit. The herbal notes balance very well with the Brett. Finishes like water, no alcohol.

M: very light, but expected. Great carbonation, just perfect for the style.

O: I was very impressed by this beer. It was the highlight of a night that included brews such as Black Tuesday and Sour in the Rye, and this one is only 3% (I still can't beleive that). Pick this one up if you can. (767 characters)

Picked up at Healthy Spirits during my trip to San Francisco early February 2012.

Appearance – Pours into my Cantillon Tulip glass with a slightly hazy straw color and massive amounts of off white head that dissipates quickly leaving zero lacing.

Smell – Heavy lemon zest, sour green apple, slight funk, grass clippings, hay.

Taste – A wonderful mouth puckering lemon tartness up front followed by the wonderful granny smith apple flavors. Slight wheat flavors, grass, and straw. A nice earthiness and barnyard funk also. Hot damn there is a lot of flavor in this low ABV beer.

Mouthfeel – Medium to lighter bodied, spritzy carbonation, finishes extremely dry.

Overall – A fantastic Berliner Weis. I am ISO more of this for sure. (744 characters)

Straw colored with a thin head that dissipates quickly into a thin ring around the glass. Smell is floral, and sour citrusy, more grapefruit than orange. Taste is sour and bright. This is a really clean tasting sour, there's nothing cluttering up the palate, which to me makes it taste really fresh. Mouthfeel is light, but not thin. The light carbonation is amplified by its tang.

This is quite simply an enjoyable beer, which I think is accessible even to those who don't much care for the style (case in point is my wife, who doesn't generally like sours, but enjoyed this one thoroughly). (676 characters)
