Carefully poored to produce a golden/honey color (clear) with a 1/4" white head & loads of effervescence.

S: Huge fruitty smell & hints of breadyness

T: Big fruittyness & citric (orange peel) hops. A little biscuittyness follows as it warms. Some appleskin notes & juicyfruit comes through as it warms. Finishes with citrussy hops & quenching juicyness!

MF: Medium bodied & efferevescent, very well balanced

Very drinkable, was slightlty better when I had it downunder, but still pretty tasty & quaffable, epsecially for the abv. Reminds me a lot of worthington whiteshield from back in the day (88-93 UK). Pour this very carefully! Easily one of the best beers I have had from Australia

The beer pours a cloudy gold color with a ton of floaties and a half inch white head that quickly fades to lacing. The aroma is average as well. It has a weak malt scent that boasts of pale and light crystal malts. It has a light hop and slightly fruity yeast aroma. The taste is average. It has a dry, yet mildly sweet pale malt flavor with a bit of yeast fruitiness in the finish. The mouthfeel is decent. It is a low/medium bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This beer was a let down. I really was expecting something better.

Had on 02/29/08, reviewed from notes:

Pours golden with a thin head.

The smell is of sweet grain, some light fruitiness, some grassy notes.

The taste is of sweet grain and light fruits.

Light, effervescent and pretty crisp.

Might be okay as a heat-beater. It has something to it, but nothing particularly special, IMO. A classic that was probably better years ago relative to what was out there then compared to now.

A classic brew that I'm glad to have a chance to have - Thanks again, John.

Bottle into An Brainblasta goblet in Galway, Ireland.

A: 2.5 finger thin head of very poor retention. Yellow-orange colour, very hazy.

Sm: Fresh scent of barley and maybe citrus hops.

T: Lovely orange esters, an almost buttery finish. Built typically for the style, but certainly well. The orange and butter add complexity to an otherwise mediocre beer. Yeast! You can even see the yeast floating about if you pour it as such (I tried). Unexpected in a beer of this price point.

Mf: Very light on the palate; nicely smooth and wet. Subtle.

Dr: A bit pricey, but I assume this is only in Ireland. A good beer for what it is and its style.

12.7 oz. bottle,

A: Cloudy yellow-orange with lots of yeast floaties in it, high in carbonation with a good thick off-white head.

S: Noble hopping, and plenty of acidity, along with some bready malts.

T: Banana and bubblegum esters abound, almost like a hefe, but more reserved. There is also a bit of metallic noble hopping, possibly Pride of Ringwood? Not sure on that.

M: Very dry with lots of carbonation - "scrubbing bubbles."

D: Very refreshing, smooth, and easy to drink. Not exactly an English Pale Ale, but a good tasty ale to drink. Would be a good palate cleanser.

Maybe I am missing something here, but I am underwhelmed by this beer.

Poured into a Duval glass from a 375ml brown bottle, thought I had stopped before the sediment got out, but the brew was not a clear golden colour, more a dull copper, with no head to talk of.

Smell was non existant, not even dirty pants, or even fresh running spring water.

The taste, what taste? We are talking about fizzy water here, very unimpressed. Where the 5.8% comes from beats the hell out of me.

I have 3 more of these in my garage, I think my son is getting them for Christmas (he drinks anything, as long as it is crap).

An afternoon of AUS beers continued at my aunt's house and ain't that the truth!

From the bottle: "Real Aussie Ale"; "Brewed in Australia"; "No Additives-No Preservatives-Australian Made-Australian Owned"; "Best After [!] 19 Nov 10"; "Coopers Ales and Stout are brewed using the centuries old top fermentation method and natural bottle conditioning, resulting in a characteristic fine sediment forming on the base of the bottle. This sediment is completely natural and can be gently mixed before drinking or poured carefully leaving the sediment in the bottle."

I applaud their willingness to bottle-condition their beers, but it was slightly unexpected and I tilted the bottle to get a better look at the label (I need (at least) bifocals) and that movement stirred things up briefly, settling as I wrote.

I went with a gentle pour to start, leaving maybe 1/2 of the liquid in the bottle and causing no more than 1/4 finger of bone-white head to form. Color was an oh-so-slightly hazy golden yellow, but I was unsure that my pour could have been any more gentle. Nose had an interesting spring-like flowery/perfume smell and my aunt said apricots. Mouthfeel was medium with really tight scrubbing bubbles on the tongue. Taste had a yeasty mustiness initially, followed by that same flowery/perfume taste. Finish was semi-dry and I still felt like I was tasting essence of perfume.

Post-agitation, I had a much different beer. The head was now denser and had taken on a French Vanilla color along with specks of yeast that resembled a dusting of cinnamon. Nose was now quite musty and I was now willing to agree with my aunt on the apricot odor. Mouthfeel was medium, but the taste was much more tart than before. Finish was bone-dry, Zephyr winds blowing across the Sahara Desert dry, so dry that I needed a drink of water.

Bottom line: decide which you prefer before pouring OR slowly decant half of the bottle's contents and then decide if you want a totally different taste sensation.

Part of my attempt to get a more comprehensive coverage of the most readily available Australian beers. Purchased at Liquorland - it's a nice experience to get reviewable beers from such a massive chain.

Pours a pale yellow-golden colour, cloudy with yeast sediment which I agitated and added to the glass. Head is initially frothy and boisterous, a just-eggwhite off-white colour that leaves good lacing. Looks pretty good.

Nose unmistakably has an Australian edge to it - I believe that Pride of Ringwood is used in this brew, giving that slightly earthy, slightly rank character. But there's a cleanness to it which is better than a lot of other examples of its usage. Not bad.

Taste is better -- it has a smooth clean palate, bittered with a slight phenolic edge, but largely clean, round and slightly buttery. Pleasant fresh finish gives a slight twang of green, but it's all very mellow and approachable. Mouthfeel is clean and slick.

It's a nice brew, this one. Certainly easy to drink and very sessionable. Not something that's going to wow you, but it's something that you could keep going with all night.

This is just a really plain beer that's easy to drink and can be refreshing. There's no real malt to it, but some sweetness and fruit. It's a bit like apple, but bland. The guy at the Party Source apparently really likes this beer, I found it to be an easy drinking beer. Save this for a hot day in Australia.

Pours a hazy golden with a very finely beaded head that fades to a thin swirl. Slight lacing. The aromas are sweet with bready malt and some bright fruit, but it is by no means heavy. The taste is similar with nicely balanced fruit and bready malt, with a fruity and crisp bitterness on the finish. Smooth and easy to drink. Nicely balanced.

BB 22/03/09, served lightly chilled and clouded (with yeast sediments) in a straight imperial pint glass, as the "clear serving" I experimented in the past didn't tell an interesting story about this beer.

A: cloudy dark-tangerine-amber in colour, coming with a fast dissipating white froth and abundant but fine carbonation.
S: dryish citrus-peel, a touch of wet wholemeal toast and sugary pale malts seem to dominate the aroma, albeit not overly strong, balanced by a flow of natural fruit-esters (reminiscent of sweet pineapples) as well as barn-house mustiness from the yeast sediments, almost reminiscent of saison+witbier+Yakult... Not particularly complex, but the hoppyness and yeastiness seem to define the special features of this ale. Lovely!
T: a sprizty mouthful of roughly grainy & lightly caramely maltiness comes on top of sour-sweet citrus-fruits, prunes, fennel-like herbs, chalk, gristy malts, and peppery hops, while a powdery palate of yeasts brings up increasingly dryish, slightly licorice-root like bitter-sweetness and a light touch of tangy zests that both linger in the dry & yeasty finish.
M&D: sparkling? well, the texture is in fact spritzy, but with very fine, light and refreshing fizziness; medium-bodied as it is, this ale has retained a rough balance b/w yeasts and malts, while hops sort-of retreat to the second tier to provide a key bitter element overall. This ale is best enjoyed when served cloudy, IMO, and what a thirst-quenching ale this could be!

"Real Aussie Ale" is labled on the neck of the bottle, and the bottle is a little larger too; 12.7 ounces. But what's a sparkling ale? I had never heard of such a style, so I gave it a try. On to the beer:

It pours like a golden pale ale, with the addition of sediment floating in the body. I didn't know what to think of the sediment at first, but the back of the bottle said not to worry, as it's totally natural. The smells a little fruity, and the taste is extrememly well balanced, with a yeasty apricot tang to it. A very interesting beer, sort of like a Belgian Extremely Light Pale Ale.

Pours a cloudy orange brew.

Smell is lightly fruity and grainy. Smell is tutee fruity and lemon and faint bubble gum.

Taste is mild and fruity with lots of wheat flavor. Not what I would have expected from a pale ale, this beer seems to blend elements of several different styles. Fruity and bitter note to the hops, tastes much like English ale.

Mouthfeel is average.

Very drinkable brew, Cloudy like a wheat beer, fruity like an English ale, bottle fermented like a Belgian. A unique and tasty brew.

Poured a cloudy yellow gold, nice carbonation, with a small head. Lots of lacing afterwards. Could smell some hops, malt, and some sweetness. Very nice tasting beer, with a medium body. This brew would make a very nice session drink, would recommend.

Poured from the bottle into a nonic pint glass.

An opaque marmalade orange body, with some minor floaties and orange amber hues is made off the pour. Head is three fingers and creamy white, quickly settling to two fingers and a big bubbled pinhead puck.

Nose is biscuity malt. Mineral water and slightly spritzy. Yeast slight fruit like esters, and hits of mild herbal/floral hop angle.

Palate comes with a bit of a wet body, and borderline seltzery carbonation. Toasty and biscuity malt is hidden, but there manages to be some astringent like lime hop aftertaste on the finish. There's a little bit of alcohol warmth to this.

Overall, the body behind this beer and weak palate sort of leaves me a bit disappointed, but it's drinkable and it could be a lot worse to have out there for sure.

'Sparkling Ale' is perhaps the most ironically named beer I know of. This turbid, marmalade-looking beverage is replete with yeast particles resembling torn finger nails and has a complexion only as bright as a rainy autumn evening. While a harder pour might exacerbate some of the former, head needs to be generated somehow; this looks awfully flat.

Leaving beer unpasteurized usually affords it a little extra padding for long journeys, but the trip from Down Under to these North American shores must have been pretty rough - the smell of budding green hops has faded substantially and its biscuity maltiness comes across as frail and battered. The thing seems to have gotten sea sick.

The taste allows us a more fair and accurate glimpse into how the beer is surely meant to be; its firm bready flavours and underlying zest characterize the English Pale Ale style to a tee. While both are moderate flavours they are fairly assertive on the palate and suit one another well. A hint of honeyed oats lingers softly on the aftertaste.

I've drank my fair share of Coopers Sparkling over the years and have often noticed great inconsistencies bottle to bottle; unfortunately this particular sample isn't suiting my fancy quite like others have. Mostly this stems from two discrepancies, the first regarding carbonation (tonight nil) and the other being hoppiness (less bitter, less animate than usual).

Nevertheless, it's still made clear that the Australians learned a thing or two from their British ancestors when it comes to crafting mild and sessionable beers. This is exactly the kind of offering you'd want to find fresh on cask at your local pub... having it stale and battered in bottle shipped from the other side of the planet is less ideal, but still alright.

A: Poured a hazy soft rustic orange with a thin, fizzy head that quickly dissipated. There was a great deal of turbidity at first with a noticeable haze of suspended, speckled yeast particles that lazily drifted about. The beer eventually cleared a little bit while leaving a silt sediment coating on the bottom of the glass. Visible carbonation was very aggressive and rapid.

S: There was not a lot to speak of aroma wise, overall was very light with only slight hints of warm oranges. Pretty mundane.

T: spicy oranges with a slight sourness that soon followed. You can definitely detect the yeasty nature here. The finish was tart and musky with some dry grains and yeastiness.

M: very fizzy and active, light bodied while leaving a powdery tart yeastiness and malting behind.

D: Average drinkability, not one I would enjoy in multiples but worthy of a try.
