Poured from a bottle into an English pub glass. Nearly pitch black with the odd red flash glimmering here and there, with a wholesome milkshake-like tan head. Aroma includes roasted barley, rich milk chocolate, cold coffee, and a whiff of smoke. Palate reflects all these elements as well, along with a tannic red wine fruitiness that is rather interesting in a stout. Bittersweet, with carob and butterscotch diacetyl, raisins or dried currants, and blonde roast coffee flitting in and out of awareness, something different with each sip. Smooth and creamy body, semi-thick (certainly more so than an Irish dry stout), with an earthy dry tea-bag finish that also hits a few wood char and chocolate milk notes on the way out. Plenty tasty and I'd make this a go-to stout if it was easier to find in these parts. I like the juxtaposition of sweet dark malts and tannic fruity/bitter almost Burton-esque flavors. Its not a super heavy hitter, looking considerably darker than it tastes if that makes sense, but features more character than some of its better known mass-produced counterparts from Ireland.

Poured a pitch black color with light off-white colored head,aroma was smokey and somewhat woody.Taste was oily and wood-like with some sweetness lingering in the end of this one.Nice to see some sediment in a stout you dont see that too often,seems like it would be very food friendly.

Appearance – This one is black as night with a very dark, blackened head.

Smell – This nose shows a lot of promise. The bulk of the aroma is made up of the dark, roasted malts and burnt coffee. Behind that, the lovely dark chocolate and cocoa notes mix with some refined sugars to give it an extra kick. The bouquet ends with the tease of darkened fruits and cherries.

Taste – The entire nose shows up at the tongue but takes a step back. This is not a full-bodied, all on assult of the taste buds. Instead, this one plays lightly in the mouth, making this a potentially really good session stout (yes, there is such a thing as a session stout).

Mouthfeel – This one is medium-bodied and a little thinner than I prefer, but good nevertheless. It’a actually a little milky creamy in the cheeks.

Drinkability – Very smooth. This one went down well enough. It’s not the heavy hitter that was hinted at the nose, but an excellent medium-bodied effort.

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 12.7oz bottle into an imperial pint glass.

Appearance: The body has a very dark brownish black color which is nearly opaque. The pour produces a small head that fades quickly down to a small ring of foam. It is light tan in color and makes some slick lacing on the glass.

Smell: It has a solid full aroma. There is a lot of nice roasted character with sweet malted grain, caramel and dark chocolate notes.

Taste/Mouth: The flavor has solid roasted grain character with some sweet caramel, bitter/sweet chocolate and creamy coffee notes mixed with mild hop bitterness. The finish has mild bitterness from the hops and bitter/sweet cocoa powder fading slowly off the tongue. Its palate is slick and creamy with a viscous texture and soft carbonation.

Notes: Outstanding!!! This beer is very enjoyable and surprisingly easy to drink.

12.7 oz short brown bottle with no freshness date.

Appearance: Ink black with a finely frothed lace that show an ample amount of stickage.

Smell: Quite aromatic with suggestions of soft espresso, liquorish, black currants and faint charcoal.

Taste & Mouthfeel: Solid creamy malty backing that holds the thick medium body together. Hints of vanilla and highly roasted coffee on the palate, the hopping is there for balance and is not too expressive. Layered crispness draws out a little bit of roasted bitterness that is faintly astringent. A sweet finish with light roasted grain in the end.

Notes: A highly drinkable, big bodied stout. A recommended ale for stout lovers to have in their fridge at all times. A versatile beer to pair food with, I could see doing chocolate as well as a hearty beer stew.

750mL longneck with a Best After date of 26/8/04 13:10.

Appearance: Opaque black covered by a thin sheet of persistent head on top, with stubborn, cohesive lace coating the sides.

Smell: Mild - alcohol is detectable, but through the smell alone this is not an overpowering element.

Taste: Malty, effervescent and complex. Strong coffee flavours upon contemplation. Pleasant, peaty finish, somewhere between a cheap Porter and a complex English Dark Ale. Alcohol, coffee and creamy vanilla flavours are primary constituents. Roasted malt flavours are implied, particularly by the coffee esters.

Notes: A very adult stout. Many lager drinkers do not like this beer, since its 'serious' characteristics hit one in the face from first sip. Would be perfect for a casserole, or for testing the Irish theory of the appropriateness of the stout & oysters combination. This beer highlights the reason for this style being called a "stout": any sane man would back away if meeting this beer personified in a dark alley. An excellent session beer: bottle-conditioned and roasted properties improve the drinker's impression of the beer with every passing bottle.

N.B. This beer has greater complexity in the longneck (750mL) than the stubbie (375mL), the latter of which I believe to be more readily available abroad, unfortunately.

Pours black with a strong brown head that holds well.

The smell was fairly complex. I caught coffee, dark chocolate and a toasted note to it. My sister pointed out that she smelled cherries.

This is a heavy-bodied beer to say the least. A good mouthfeel if you know what you are getting into. There is a heavy coffee start followed by heavy smokiness. It finishes with some bitterness that pales in comparison to the smoky middle.

This beer is one you would drink in autumn or any chilly night. Would go well with smoked gouda and maybe a smoked extra sharp cheddar.

Single bottle purchased at a Sydney Mr. Liquor.

Poured into the tumbler the hotel room had kicking about. Deep chestnut, almost black, with a mocha head which recedes quickly with snappy bubble bursts. Some lacing sheets.

The nose is quite pleasant: coffee, cream, milk chocolate, toasted malt, a bit of booze.

A pleasant stout that does what it sets out to do quite well. Begins nice and malty with that sweet chocolate creamy flavor, then transitions to a dry, bitter roasted coffee finish. Quite enjoyable.

Carbonation is a bit hot, but the body is slick n' thick - just right for the stout.

A solid brew and a pleasant evening sipper. Nothing out of the ordinary, but everything seems to be put together properly. A stout you can order with security knowing you won't be disappointed. Great work.

Poured opaque black with dark brown edges and an inch of light brown foam. Loads of little pieces of sediment floating around from the bottle conditioning , and my pour. Aroma is of the roasted black malt , chocolate , roasted coffee and slight creamy/dairy. Taste is an oily , strong ,rich mix of smokey black malts , coffee, some dry, dark chocolate tones , wood, and a bit of a yeasty bite. Mouthfeel is slick and oily. Very interesting and complex Stout from Australia. Very drinkable as well.

Sucked in by Cooper's again. Pours very nice; black, thick, with no head. Aroma is good; nice toasted malt with coffee and chocolate. But the taste is so underwhelming. Caramel and earthy flavors mix with the malt and coffee, but it just tastes so weak. It is almost like someone intentionally watered it down becuase they ran out. Its also not cheap. Spend your money elsewhere.

A: totally black with a creamy coffee-like head;

S: roasted malt, coffee grains, espresso, dark chocolate;

T: lots of coffee and chocolate notes;

M: medium body with a little bitterness at the end;

O: A nice beer, it has all the caracteristics of the style, but nothing that really stands out for me.

Appearance:
Very dark brown. Head is strong at first but fades kinda quick. Very nice looking.

Smell:
Has a coppery smell that isn't that great. Some grains and hops come through.

Taste:
Smooth flavor very even. Not too sweet and has some charcol hints. This would be a great beer to have with some steak.

Mouthfeel:
Smooth and crisp in mouth. Not as heavy as I would have expected. Overall this is pretty refreshing.

Drinkabiility:
A very nice beer. Smooth tasting and not too heavy. If it wasn't for the off smell (maybe I just have a bad one?) I would be much more excited about this beer.

12.7oz twist off bottle, fridge temp, snifter. best after 16 JUL 09 (?)

pours out nearly black, actually a dark brown. a thin biege colored head, pretty good retention. some lacing from a swirl of the glass. big chunks of yeast visible.

some roasted malt, raisony, figgy dark fruits, nutty aromas possibly from the yeast. a little molasses.

a nice blend of some roast, chocolate, dark fruits, nutty yeast, some fruity esters, a bit of a molasses, borwn sugar taste. finishes with a bitter sweet chocolate flavor.

a little too much carbonation, fizzy feel. makes for a weaker overall feel.

overall, a surprisingly decent beer. i wasnt expecting much, a friend found these in the back of his fridge and knew i liked beer. not something i would ever really buy, but atleast the other 5 wont be too hard to drink.

Impenetrable brown with eager spritzy head that diminished. Very strong, robust aroma, particularly from the bottle, of molasses and soy sauce. Bottle says 32601 which I presume means the bottle is just about a year old. Some sediment and a mellowness indicate its age; I'm laying a bottle down (not literally) to see how long this bottle-conditioned brew can last. Some lingering soy or teriyaki sauce in the flavor could be a remnant of improper handling (dead yeast) or the result of Cooper's unique maltings for this beer. A fascinating combo of sweet, lactic flavors and bitter coffee flavors, set askew from normal stout expectations by a stern wood quality and aforementioned soy. Almost nothing in the way of hops although the beer is dry enough to not be cloying. Rather fizzy mouthfeel for the style but that's the Adelaide way. A very interesting drink: a stout that verges on doppelbock territory. Should be a great thing to try in a recipe.

Bottle conditioned, dark and full bodied, opaque. Kind of a scorched coffee flavor, starts very dense but finishes with a too bitter edge. Nicely brewed and "Guinness Extra Stout-like" but the bitterness is over the top and brings the drinkability down.

Appearance: Dark ruby brown almost black big chunks of nice tan head leaves some lacing down my sampling glass. Aroma: Soft chocolate stronger coffee notes, soft molasses and vanilla notes there as well. Taste: Creamy chocolate edge awesome coffee burst bready note from the excess of yeast floaties in my glass, very nice flavor. Mouthfeel: Medium bodied stout glad I finally gave this jewel a try smooth carbonation can't complain. Drinkability: Pass on the Foster's search for something from the Coopers line great extra stout excellent balance nice sweetness happy with this one.
