The beer poured into the glass chunky and hazy and overall nasty looking medium amber with a very low white head that fell in an instant and tried the lace the glass. The appearance was disgusting!

The aroma was nicely malty with a strong caramel malty presence and a nice English hop bittering component to complement.

The flavor was malty with a low caramel malt impression and well done hop bittering that balanced but was present enough to drive the strong ales' flavor from the malt to a more even stance. The beer was crisp and fruity and very well done.

The finish was just dry with a lasting citrusy hop impression coupled with a nice maltiness. The body was just above medium but seemed a bit less due to the carbonation. Alcohol was barely present in the flavor and only really came into play in the warming after consumption. This beer looks like puke in the glass. The aroma was kinda boring but the beer was spot in the flavor. Seek it out for that reason alone.

12 ounce twist off bottle. 4-OCT/2002. $3 at OUAV in Richmond, VA.

Great initial taste but has IPA aftertaste which lingers and ruins the overall taste. Bottle was only 6 months old and if it was left for a few years as suggested this could challenge some of the quality Belgium beers

$13.90 AUD per "pint" (425ml in the case of South Australia). On-draught @ Coopers Alehouse, Adelaide, South Australia.

Marmalade, buttery flavour, oak/high residual barrel sugars, vanillin, candied apricot, honeyed malt, caramel/caramalt, biscuit, citrus.

Alcohol warmth runs under these flavours, largely obscured by the beer's high residual sugars and malty sweetness.

Drinkable if on the sweeter side...not an ale I'd want a second pour if in a single sitting and 425ml is a bit much. But it's a nice enough Australian strong ale that tips its hat to English tradition.

I'm glad I tried it once, but I can't say I think it's terrific to be honest. Maybe with more aging (I'm trying the 2021 vintage) it would mellow out sweetness wise, but as is it's a bit of a cloying chore to take down.

August 2008: At the Great British Beer Festival 2008. Copper coloured beer, off-white head. The aroma and flavour are very malty, alcoholic and oaky. Might sample again.

Vintage 2016.
Dark amber, quite full of floating pieces. One finger of beige foam, quickly disappearing.
Malty smell, a lot of dry fruit, dates, figs, raisins. Fudge.
Full and malty taste, candy fruits, raisins, dehydrated fruits.
Intense, full body.
Not too long aftertaste, but intnese, with a finish of candy fruit and dried figs.
Good!

Had the 2014 vintage direct from bottle. L. Appears appropriate but hard to tell. S. Pleasant grainy, toffee. T. Solid strong ale, toffee and grain leading to a dry alcohol finish. F. Pleasant, medium body. O. Good, would happily drink again.

From Saveur Biere. In Teku glass. Playing Avernum 4. 2005 Vintage. Pleasantly malty, caramelly, with a noticeable alcohol touch but nothing unpleasant, just giving a word of caution. Fine but lacking punch

Thick golden and hazy with little visible carbonation, and topped with a finger of off white head.

Smells of malts, honey and caramel.

Tastes of malts, a little honey, and biscuit, followed by a big, dull, bitterness that lingers on the tongue.

Medium, slightly sticky body, with low carbonation.

Got this in Perth, Australia, drinking in Chiang Mai, June 8th, 2018. This was the 2016 version as labeled on the bottle. Decent brew, in a style I don't come across often.

Pours out with a murky amber body, tiny soapy head and sweet malt nose. A hint of the elevated ABV is apparent, honey, vanilla, toffee accents. All of the above meld together nicely, with some gentle warmth and a sweet finish.

2009 vintage
Oh no, vintage with screw cap

Big creamy head, nice lacing, very hazy reddish orange color

Nose aged malt, plenty of oxidation, little yeasty, sweet candy malt, chewy nougat

Taste little bitter herbal grassy hop, more oxidation, sweet candy malt, toffee syrup, sticky, little metallic too

Mouth sticky syrupy, decent carb

Overall eh, as expected
