4.43/5  rDev +16.3%
look: 4 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4 | overall: 4.5

Appearance
Poured from a 350 ml brown bottle. Clearly marked "best after" stamp on the bottle. I'm enjoying it about months after. It is "expressly cellar aged"

A bubble medium brown head is constantly replenished from... somewhere in this dark liquid. Sounds more Snap Crackle Pop than most stouts.

Smell
Chocolate is the dominant aroma. And I could detect the alcohol as soon as I poured it... but that diminished. Can pick up currants, too.

Taste
At first the sip was nice - "hmmm, nice" - then it hit the roof of my mouth and it was really nice - "ooh!" - then the back of my throat and was yummy - "ooh, nice!" A delicious dark chocolate taste.

Mouthfeel
Very full in flavour but a bit too quick to dissipate. Still solid overall.

Drinkability
I could enjoy several of these. A very clean aftertaste leaves a pleasant memory and a desire to renew it!

Coopers Special Old Stout.

A = Black as black can be with a tan foam head that slowly dissapates.

S = Roasted coffee notes infused with a soft dark chocolate aroma.

T = Mellow roasted coffee taste with a burt caramel middle. Tapers off with a slight dark chocoate finish.

M = Smooth. A bit less watery than the extra best stout.

D = Could see myself drinking this often. But not too many per session.

This stout is as black as a dogs guts.
My poured stubby elicited little smell , but the initial flavour was a rounded coffee chocolate. The flavour fell away though, to a minimalist charcoal toast
It felt smooth and soft , perhaps too soft in the mouth.
This is a strongish brew at 6.8% and the coffee chocolate predominance makes it an enjoyable stout but one for moderation

pours with a great looking, stable 1cm tan head over a stout black beer.
aroma is full with roasted malts with hints of yeast and some dark fruit as well.
mmm. sweet malt and coffee bean flavors. a hint of alcohol in the last mouthfull.
mouthfeel is divine. like drinking full cream milk (if you like that sort of stuff. obviously, i do).
if i went out, i would love to see this on tap on a cold winter night.

Presentation: 12.7 oz stubby brown bottle with a best before freshness date. Some yeast slurry is noticeable on the bottom of the bottle after a careful decantation.

Appearance: Short dark tan head, pretty damn black from what I can see.

Smell: Steely burnt sugar aroma; caramelization & charcoal. Light buttery and fruity (estery?) note in the back.

Taste & Mouth Feel: Medium bodied with a small crispness and slickness on the mouth. Watery roasted flavor but a lingering burnt & charcoal character. Buttery with a dark fruitiness, dark chocolate as well.

Drinkability & Notes: Not half bad, but compared to the many other stouts out there this seems pedestrian to me.

A nice smooth stout, rich in coffee notes to smell, earthy, garden-bed flavours like a rich shiraz. Aftertaste is a citrus-type tang. Exceptionally smooth for a bottle conditioned ale, worth buying a few and simply enjoying them - seems like an ale one should not overcontemplate. Simple, smooth and satisfying.

Hard to get a head on the pour, so it ended up with only a tiny head that disapated immediately. A nice deep brown colour, low carbonation.

Sweet anise and caramel aromas are first noticed, with some dark fruit notes coming through over time. Becomes a touch winey (earthy fruit flavours with a touch of smokey oak). Quite nice.

Good front palate sweetness is backed up by tough roast flavours of coffee, choc and caramel. Slight bitterness. Alcohol and green hops on the aftertaste let this down somewhat, as the balance is lost after you take a sip.

A good stout, but I would be happy to stick to the normal Coopers Stout.

Pours thick, oily, and black. I think it had a tan head but I blinked and missed it. That was very disappointing. It ended up looking like a dark soda because there was no head. I like the fact that when you hold it up to the light, there ain't no light getting through that glass! Smells a little weak but I pick up some chocolate and malt overtones. Tastes a little on the weak side too but there is definitely some good malts, a hint of sweetness (like raisins), and a carmel aftertaste to it. A good mild introductory stout. It would be a regular occurence for me but there are better ones out there.

Mmm. This was tasty. Poured nicely in a goblet, it has a strong brown coloring with a very nice flavor. Light on the hops, strong on the malt, it produced strong chocolate flavor with a nice malt background to back it up. Very rich and creamy over-all feel. Highly drinkable, nicely quaffable, it can be a fine addition as a conversion brew to any BA repartoire. Also, while tasting great both warm and cold, it can be used as an experienced builder to the less inclined BA. Well played all round.

while i like the best extra better than this, coopers old stout is not merely a throwaway idea to expand their range. it provides an interesting and enjoyable contrast to their usual, and is clearly the most refined stout in the southern hemisphere.

the appearance is the same as the best extra, its in the smell and taste where the differences stand out. subtle mocha like nose, with mild smoke and a little bit of dried fruit there, and traces of alcohol can be detected. the taste is chocolatey with a backing of coffee beans, some nuts and subtle roasted flavors. also a bit sweeter in flavor with none of the salty aspects of the standard stout. a little less powerful in its character and not as oily also, but still full bodied. i would say this is more of a dessert stout, whereas the best extra is definately a savory beer.

a stout with a bit of class, coopers old certainly shows the way brewers in this country should be thinking. they arent afraid to go out and construct a beer with a bit of thought and put something out there that any discerning beer lover can enjoy.

Pretty nice, but i probably prefer their regular stout, this isn't as roasty as the regular stout, but still nice, its a touch sweeter aswell, OK.
