Ellwood Thompson has seriously cut back on their beer selection. When I began going there in 1997, they had a great selection. Since then, they have slowly reduced the selection. With the latest rounds of redesign, their selection is at an all time low. It is now more of an after thought selection. Meaning, if you already went to Carytown but forgot to go to the far superior Carytown Wine and did not want to go back, you can find a decent beer to take home, but not much more. Though as a beer buying store they no longer are of concern to beer lovers, Ellwood Thompson is still a great store. We love their cheese & bread selection, as well as organic produce and foods.

For a largish, independent natural foods market, you get what you get. The beer selection, while fairly small, is pretty good, almost all craft except for the stuff they stock for the hipsters. However, the turnover on some items is not as fast as desired, you never have any idea what will be there, and I often leave without a beer, just because nothing strikes my fancy that evening.

The service, well, it depends on who's working. Some of the employees are genuinely helpful and into what they do, but a lot of them seem to be hired purely because they look the part.

Prices on some of the food items is comparable to elsewhere, but almost every beer I've bought there and then seen elsewhere has been more expensive at Ellwood's.

If you live in the area, support the store, but don't make a big trip if you live out of town.

Another stop during my weekend in Richmond. Mainly went there to check out the produce and NICE cheese selection. The beer selection was a pleasent surprise. Not a huge selection, but very few dogs in the group.. DFH, Troegs, Unibroue all represented among others. Prices seemed in line with other beer shops in the area, which is surprising as I have found that health food stores are usually a bit higher. All in all if you are going there and need beer they will have something for you, but I would buy my cheese there and drive the 5 minutes to Carytown Wine and Beer.

Decent clean place. Good selection of beers if you are looking to do some pairings. Easy too since the fancy foo foo cheese is right next to the beer. :-)

Not much in the way of help when Ive been there, regarding beer anyway. Other areas of the store are great.

Selection consists of 3? coolers of a mix of 6 packs and 750s. Then there are a few more 750s in the cheese coolers. All good stuff though. Whoever orders the stock has an idea of whats going on but maybe should educate the wine staff a little more.

Fellow BA Darkale has written an excellent review of ET, so I'll just throw in my $.02.

Definitely a different atmosphere. Sorta "Starbuck's"-ish...lots of wool socks and sandles, alternatively-dressed, etc. people in the store. Vast selection of natural products and other "environmentally-friendly" goods.

Beer selection is very nice. Lots of singles to help you try something new. Good selection of 6- and 4-packs as well. Imports are well-represented, too.

I've been there several times and have yet to find an employee to help me. This isn't an issue with me, as I'm able to find what I want on my own. I would, however, like to meet the person who is responsible for the inventory and congratulate her and perhaps find out how she came up with the list of the inventory.

Prices seem right on par with other local establishments. As always, this place has some beers that I can't find at the other stores (and vice-versa), so E-T will continue to be a place I'll stop at every now and then just to see what catches my eye (most recently: 4-pack of DFH's 90-minute IPA in 12oz. bottles....thanks to Darkale for that tidbit of info!).

This is a great local fresh food market with a very nice selection of beers. It's not a world class beer and bottle shop, or a must-stop destination, Corks & Kegs is a better local choice for that. Still, I wish I had a similar grocery store near my home in NC, fresh food and a very nice selection of local and national brews. Cool place, glad I stopped by. Got some great coffee there too.

Ellwoods has cut back thier selection in the past couple years, but I feel that there is still a very nice selection there. 2 full coolers of 6 packs, with only 3 or 4 selections of macro stuff. So there are probably 20 differerent micro 6-pack slots, and a full cooler of singles. and a row of bombers. There are also 8 or so slots in the cheese case for belgians.

They do tend to be slightly higher in price (maybe $0.20 on a six pack) than others in the area. But all of the employees there are very helpful and nice.

Man is this place ever difficult to get to. It is in a niche T intersection parking lot where Ellwood and Thompson come together. I only saw a few sixers warm around the store, most of the inventory is in the cold case. It is a great place to pick up a six pack of good beer, but does not have a very large selection to choose from. The reason I rate the selection as good is that all the beers are well thought out, not a looser in the bunch. The prices seemed very much in line, and if I need a cold six pack, I would not hesitate to drop in again.

I stopped by Ellwood Thompsons for, of course, the beer. I didn't realize it was as huge an establishment as it was; I thought it was a little market, not a specialty grocery store.

They have tons of health food and organic food, most of it pretty pricey, but that stuff's expensive, so get used to it if you go there.

The beer section's in the back of the store, where there are 6-packs and 12-packs (they featured Magic Hat and DFH when I was there), and there's a cooler where most of the bombers and other specialty beers were, also in cold 6-packs too. There were decent Belgians, some IPAs, overall a decent selection.

However, with Carytown Wine and Beer and River City Cellars so close in Carytown, I think I'll be making a once-a-month trip to Ellwood Thompsons to see if I can get something that the other stores may not have.

It's not a place featuring beer, but they do have quite a nice selection, and all of it's quality stuff. The cheese section, if you're back on that, is also pretty huge, so that's something to think about also.
