Just had one of these again for the first time in about two years. When my sis and I were in Thailand, this is all we drank, not because it's cheaper than Singha (which it is) but because it's actually better. Most Thai beers don't look like much. Pale pale pale golden hued, and better off left in the bottle. Pretty sure it's brewed with rice. Lots of rice. Doesn't have much in the way of an aroma.

This beer, however, is maltier and more complex than Singha. Overall, the best of the crap beers available in Thailand, excluding Heineken and some other imports that are sometimes available. But why drink a Dutch beer when you're in Thailand??

PS: Rumor has it that Beer Chang bottles' %ABV tends to fluctuate wildly (+/- 3%) from bottle to bottle. I can't confirm this. I can, however, suggest that most tourists to Thailand probably end up dehydrated on occasion, and a parched tourist would naturally be more prone to getting sloshed off a single beer. (964 characters)

The Chang Classic is a pretty beer in the pilsner glass; clear gold with a frothy head that is sinking. Malty, grassy nose. Decent body and there is a lingering finish, toward the bitter. Very nice first sip. Light in flavor but not cheap tasting. Since there seems to be a relationship between the ruling family and the Boon Rawd Brewery (Singha), Chang is becoming more popular among opposition beer drinkers. This 630 ml bottle was personally imported by my nephew. (468 characters)

Pours very pale and carbonated. Aroma is metallic and vanilla.

More of that in the taste. Watery, yet a hop presence that is somewhat appealing on a hot summer day or with spicy food. Not a thai food guy, but have had this with Mexican and Italian hot stuff, not bad. No malt.

Kind of expensive for not much ingredients wise. (328 characters)

Pours a clear medium yellow body. Head is white with large bubbles and moderate staying power--but gone by the glass's end. Zero lace. Aroma is a mixture is a light sweet malt and citric hops with a bit of booze. Taste is clean--slightly sweet balanced by a mild bitterness--overall surprisingly smooth with little bite from the booze. Finish is smooth.

This beer has a bit of a nasty reputation among the expat community I run with-- largely due to some seriously punishing hangovers that is has dealt. Rumors circulate that domestic versions of this and many other SE Asian beers contain Formaline (a preservative mixture of Formaldehyde and Glycerine), but I think the culprit is actually the heat and dehydration. The 6.4 ABV would certainly give the light beer crowd a run for their money in this climate! All that being said, Chang is a decent beer when compared next to its SE Asian compatriots. (903 characters)

From Dec 2010 notes

330ml bottle, labeled Chang Classic, which I believe is this domestic version.

A: Very minimal head, nearly zero rising carbonation, transparent thin dull gold.

S: Mild, toasted malt, alcohol presense is somewhat apparent. Not very strong.

T: Unpleasant sourness/bitterness. Not gross, just not nice.

M: Somewhat mouth puckering, Light medium bodied, mild carbonation.

D: It's drinkable but not enjoyable. (431 characters)

Chang is a good substitute for Singha when you are in Thailand. Better ABV for lesser bahts spent. Always had straight from the can, smelt of wet grain, sourish. Tasted metallic which got bitter as the beer warmed up in your hands. An average lager with a big kick. Definitely the best choice in Thailand after Singha. (318 characters)

Ive heard that the abv can change from bottle to bottle... So be carful drinking this beer! Wait 20 min.to determin if you are ok to have another one. I dont drink it right now so I dont have the taste in my mouth but I remember it as a really good beer. Chang in thai means elephant as shown on the bottle. (307 characters)

Eh, not a terrible brew at all, but not much to it. I tried one of these over some sushi in Boca Raton, FL, and it complemented the food well. Not too much body to this, and I remember that it had a distinct taste to it that I found common in other Japanese and Chinese brews (275 characters)
