Bottle: 345mL brown bottle - I prefer the old labels better...

Appearance: a deep orange amber with a solid, thick head. Good retention, and some solid lacing.

Aroma: a fantastic mix of caramelised fruits - orange peel, peaches, mango, apricots.

Taste: not much in the taste - some of the nose carries across, but fairly muted. Definitely more metallic and not terribly refined.

Aftertaste: a touch of the aroma flavours come through at the end - just a touch though.

Mouthfeel: Light in body, reasonably high carbonation for the style. Does assist the somewhat muted flavours.

Overall: not a bad IPA to be sure, but there are better ones out there. To be honest though, it is going to be difficult to find one for a better price.

Pint at the Portland Hotel in Melbourne. From notes.

A - Poured medium copper with medium carbonation and one finger of light brown head. Some OK lace and film of retention.

S - Caramel, earthy hop and a little boring.

T - Earthy hop with very light citrus character, richer malt. Flavour got mild fast.

M - Light to medium body seemed a bit odd. Carbonation was OK with a light bitterness.

O/D - An alright English IPA. Seemed fresh and drinikable but nothing too wild. Easily forgettable. Very average and mild.

My bottle was labelled James Squire Stow Away IPA but has the same ABV as this listing so I think it's the same. This beer is an IPA in name only. Where are the hops?

A: Clear orange color and a decent 1 cm head that lasts ok. 4

S: Grainy and a little sour. No strong hop aroma. Disapointing smell for an IPA. 3

T: Strongly malty with some toasty nutty notes. Some slight bitterness and a crisp finish. Not unpleasant, but where are the hops? This doesn't taste like an IPA. 3.5

M: Foamy. 4.5

O: 3.5

I don't know if the recipe has changed since they relabelled the James Squire beers.. I cracked open an ice cold Stow Away IPA. A little smoke came out the top. It pours a nice dark orange-yellow with lots of carbonation. Smells of malty floral hops. Crisp and clean flavour, not super hoppy or bitter for an IPA. The aftertaste reminds me of Victoria Bitter.

Pretty sure this beer is now called James Squire Stow Away IPA from the picture of the bottle I took. Bottle poured into a nonic glass, reviewed from notes. Beer pours clear copper color with two fingers of uniform off white foamy head. Plenty of sticky lacing as the head recedes to a half a finger thickness, fed by a very active and vigorous carbonation.

Nose is pretty typical for an English style IPA, strong floral and some lighter herbal and grassy hops with some pale biscuit malt for a touch of sweetness.

Taste followed the nose, floral hop bitterness with lighter earthy herbal flavors (thyme from my notes). Middle of the tongue is biscuit and pale malts sweetness. Finish is dry, with lingering floral hops flavors.

Light body and highly carbonated, but not too aggressive on the tongue. Refreshing after a morning of sightseeing.

On tap at the Portland Brewhouse.

A: Served a nice copper color with a decent head and some lacing.

S: Mild aroma of some citrus, malt sweetness and hint of fresh grain.

T: Starts with a crisp nip, taste of mild malt sweetness with some fresh grain and a mild bitterness to a clean finish.

F: Fairly medium body, crisp and smooth. Decent balance.

O: Easy drinker, good for a few.

A- Pours a semi-transparent copper colour with a head that stays around for a little while until finally dissipating into a thin, creamy film. Nothing exceptional but not bad.

S- Honestly, there's not a whole lot on the nose. All it really consists of is a fairly subdued hop aroma. Maybe there is a slight presence of malts on the end but these are afterthoughts more than anything. A little average from the Malt Shovel Brewery.

T- Hops definitely dominate the palate, which is a good sign. Upfront, there is a hit of malty sweetness followed by hops which carry all the way through until the disappointing lingering grain finish. While I will say that for the most part this is a nice flavour, there certainly needs to be more of basically everything in this beer. The hops are not pronounced enough.

M- Mouthfeel is pretty decent. Goes down easily without being watery. The carbonation is also good and provides a sufficient sizzle on the tongue while not being abrasive.

O- This would make a good choice for a session beer. Unfortunately, it isn't good enough on its own merits- which to me an IPA should definitely be. A decent beer but a little meh.

Deep copper tending to tan - very attractive. Pours a fairly weak head that breaks down quickly. Big nose, a bit funky, with almost sherry like notes. Some noticable fizz but seems well balanced. Plenty of flavour lurking and good bitterness at the end to drive the mouthfeel.

Pours a deep dark orange, one finger white head that hangs around

Moderate aromas of hops, not strong at all.

The initial taste is somewhat fleeting as it quickly gets overpowered by a Big Hit of Bitterness. Big. Hmm, not so sure all in all. Having said that, the bottle I had with a curry went down just a treat.

A food beer, not a drinking beer.

This is now called Stowaway IPA with a new revamp of labels & naming and it pours a golden see through light copper hue with decent carbonation that leaves behind a one finger head with sporadic lacing, the smell is quite sweet for EIPA with aromas of strawberry jam, sweet plums, light candy and fruity hops,it has a dissapointing light bodied mouthfeel with tastes of light boiled candy, fruity stonefruit hops and light tinges of honey tinged toffee and overall its alright if you dont want a full on hoppy IPA and for me it borderlines a Pale Ale even though it clearly states it is an IPA cheers.
