When I first tasted it, I thought this was the beer that would give me a handle on Aussie crafters... having just arrived here and having had way too many of the mainstream ales/lagers. Not quite. I learned Malt Shovel was started by a crafter from Colorado in the previous century. (But, I will continue to look for the quintessential Aussie crafter.)

James Squire's Golden actually looks a bit amber, but it is pretty. Regrettably, the Smells don't give me much to go on. The Tastes are balanced, but more refreshing than they are interesting; mostly malt and not too much hops. A nice carbonation and the hops don't creep in. A decent session beer that I will go to again if I need to avoid the Aussie beer mainstream.

Listed in the "1001 Beers To Drink Before You Die", the reviewer puts this early craft ale in the perspective of how Aussie's traditionally drank (The weather is hot, the beer is very cold and bland and you drink with mates... and not in front of your laptop reviewing beers.) Because this Golden introduced a new way to drink, I'd say this is enough to be on that list... but I hope the Aussie crafters grow to the point that they can replace it soon.

Amber with some soda
like carbonation, topped with 3 fingers of off white head.

Smells of hard water, light, fruity esters, and pizza dough.

The taste follows the nose.

Medium body, medium carbonation.

Got this in Perth, drinking in Thailand Aug 25th, 2017. If it was an English pale ale, it would be marked much higher, as I think it's well done to that style. Lacking in hop flamboyance for an American style.

Format: standard 330mL brown bottle, pretty standard James Squire label.

Appearance: pours out a dark amber-gold colour with a finger of off-white head that drops away to a thin cap.

Aroma: a small amount of biscuit malts and citrus hops on the nose. Not very powerful.

Taste: more weak biscuit malts and citrus with a heavy fug over the top from either odd spices or yeast. Not the best Squire beer.

Aftertaste: the flavours follow through here, still a bit awkward.

Mouth feel: fairly light in body with a moderate carbonation.

Overall: an okay beer but certainly not the best from the James Squire line-up. I'll spend the extra $5 for a case of the others.
