I have tried Estrella Damm while on vacation in the beer's native Barcelona, Spain and also while living in the U.S. and Panama.

This Catalonian Pilsner starts out refreshing enough with a slightly sweeter malt taste than most pilsners, but the aftertaste is atrocious and rates perhaps one of my least favorite European beers.

If you are walking La Rambla on a hot summer day, sure it is a fine thirst quencher, but I wouldn't stock the fridge with a six-pack.

If in Spain, you are better off asking the bartender for a Alhambra, Mahou, or play it safe with a reputable Belgian Stella Artois.

750 ml. bottle from a friend and poured into a New Belgium globe glass. Pours a hazed lemon golden and somewhat clear in the light. Shows an inch or so of pretty sticky cap and lace.

Aroma leans to the sweet side and especially given yeast notes. Yet keeps it light on all fronts. Yeasty Tripel notes evident at times yet always contained by some wheat.

Taste is along the same lines. An interesting take on a wheat, offers a touch of sourness and a nice background funkiness. Slightly sweet and with a citric fruity character yet with an odd adjunct sense.

Quite different but good, nice yeast character on the aroma. I had limited expectations. They were exceeded easily. i will harvest this yeast, wow....

750ml-- best before 03/14 -- tasted at 4C

A: Apple juice yellow hazy; translucent
S: not fresh; simple, wet cardboard, touch of apple juice, winey. I hate to say it but it smells like a cheap lager.
T: light and simple but lacks a crispness and there is NO finish at all. Likeable but not memorable.
M: medium light bodied. carbonation could be higher.
O: an okay beer but my expectations were so much higher. I guess I was just a sucker for the story, the packaging, the website...

Appearance: Golden straw color.
Aroma: Light malty smell.
Flavor: This beer does not the tradition bold Witbier flavor. It has a very light citrus (non-orange) flavor. It’s medium bodied, with a non-hoppy, very smooth finish.
Overall: This is a very good beer which is easy to drink. Note that the 12 oz bottle version of this beer is very sunky (grade F). The 22 oz. bottle is quite pricey, but you can stop drinking it.. One of my friends call it “a nice sipping beer”. It’s on my “you gotta try” list!

A: A fairly clear a light amber beer with a persistent head of low, rocky bubbles that leave a slight lacing on the glass. A date on the neck label of 04/13 that might be a best buy; I picked this up in a discount bin of $1.99.

S: A honey-like aromas dominate with medium amount of citrus peel and coriander notes. A moderated wheat and barley malt sweetness along with a slight anise aroma. The is a medium-low amount of yeast derived phenols with a some esters of light fruits like apricots.

T: Some light spice and herbal with a little malt or wheat sweetness that allow the medium-low hop bitterness to make it a moderately bitter beer on balance. No hops flavor. Some fruit flavors that seem to be the part of the yeast except a medium citrus zest flavor. The yeast also bring a medium-light clove character that is back by a light anise flavor. The finish is pretty dry with a quick aftertaste of citrus zest and spice.

A: A medium-light bodied beer with an almost champagne-like strong level of carbonation that prickles the tongue.

O: An enjoyable dry, beer that is pretty food friendly and would go well with lighter dishes such as seafood or chicken.
