On tap at Harry's Hofbrau for the Devil's Canyon (sort of) tap takeover, 3/15/12. Brewery rep said this had 100+ IBUs.

Pours a dark ruby brown/black with about a finger of off-white head that quickly leaves with little lacing.

Smell is identical to a DIPA at first, with a nose dominated by pine and herbal hops, then some grainy/bready malt reminiscent of an English pale ale and some light lemon citrus.

A load of pine resin and earthy/herbal hops up front that gives way to the sweetness of the caramel & bready malt that keeps the hops from being too astringent. There's also an interesting note of smoke complemented by a finish with coffee/dark chocolate and a clean English yeast character.

Mouthfeel really impressed me because there's no hint of the 9% ABV, it really drinks like a bitter. Body is light and goes down easy but has a bit of creaminess and a clean finish with a bit of residual hop bitterness.

An interesting beer for sure, it doesn't drink anywhere close to 9% or 100 IBUs as claimed, but still has a lot of character. Almost like a black DIPA crossed with an English bitter but you certainly feel the ABV after a pint. Was great on a rainy day without weighing me down or blowing out the palate.
