College bars on Hillsborough street in Raleigh change with the tides. Of all the places I used to frequent, this is one of the only places that still operates under the same name. Some of my finest memories from college took place at Mitch's Tavern. I'm not sure you can even fulfill degree requirements at NC State without going to Mitch's Tavern (and Char-Grill) at least 4 or 5 times. I don't make it back to Raleigh too often, but when I do I always make it a point to stop at Mitch's.
CAMEO: Check out the movie ``Bull Durham''. The scene where Tim Robbins breaks the bar window with the baseball was filmed at Mitch's.
ADMISSION OF GUILT: I stole a mug from Mitch's when I was in school. I still have it. It's about 3 inches thick and holds about 6 oz of beer. You can break rocks with it.
NOTE: I'm giving the food a good rating, even though I'm not completely sure they still serve food there. Consider it a retroactive review of the fabulous `Jessie Helms' sandwich I used to order there all the time when I was in college.

Mitch's is a great break from the norm in a college town. Being a student at NC State, it's one of my favorite places to grab lunch and a pint during the school day as it is located right across from campus. As a baseball fan, there's nothing like drinking a beer where Crash Davis and Annie drank in the movie. Hell, that right there ought to be enough to get anyone to try Mitch's at least once.
The atmosphere is the best of any bar I've been too. The wall decorations range from sports memorabilia to fine art giving it a right nice mixture of the old and the new which is what Mitch's is all about. There's also enough TV's that you can sit down and watch a game no matter where you sit, except the backroom that is, but it isn't like a sports bar where there's so many tvs it gets in the way of the proper atmosphere for a tavern. It can be a little crowded at times, but the din, crowd, and setting just go together absolutely perfectly. It feels like a place you've been going to you're whole life where you know everyone even if its your first time going. Further, it is a complex and mixed crowd. You have college students, yuppies, and old timers, hippies, scenesters, and a few good ol' boys like me. Each one has their place at Mitch's and we all feel like we belong their.
The service is pretty good, I eat there about 2 times a week and only have had trouble with one server who was new and it was a busy day. All around, the staff is great and personable. They tend to connect well with the table and usually end up talking and joking with the customers which just makes you feel at home. Not to mention most of them ain't to hard on the eyes which is always a plus.
Their beer selection is phenomenal for such a small bar, I recently went on their 2.50 mystery beer night and couldn't have been more pleased with the beers we got. It was a great variety of obscure microbrews and a few good old fashioned macros. The tap is a little small, but is a quality over quantity deal with more micros on tap than macros. I have noticed their a little short in the liquor department, but it's one of those places where if you ain't drinking a pint, you're doing something wrong, so who gives a damn about liquor anyway.
The food is probably the best part about Mitch's. For about the first 10 or so times I went there, I had a different meal each time and was never disappointed. Their soups and and sandwiches will blow your mind. I'm a New Orleans native, and their gumbo, my first ever meal there, blew my socks off. Now that ought to tell you something. The only reason I put a 4.5 instead of a 5 for food is the pasta is not that great, so just stick to the sandwiches, soup, and kielbasa.
The price is made to be across from a college. I can get a pint and a hot Cuban sandwich for under $10 dollars. It's as cheap as fast food and a million times better. The beer prices are also right reasonable with great specials everyday.
Look, if you come to Raleigh, and you're around NC State, you have to stop by Mitch's Tavern. It'll change your world.

Been to this place a couple times...usually drunk when I get there but not this time.
Waitress was cute and genuinely nice. Cracked a couple of jokes at the expense of our table, including one when I wanted a glass to pour my Terrapin Rye into. All's fair, she got a good tip. The atmosphere is shrouded but cheery, like a tavern that's right off the route of a whaling fleet. Didn't get the food, but I've heard good things. Beer was cheap (2.50 for our Terrapin's, and 3.00 for a pint of Duck Rabbit milk stout). Only downfall is the selection. About 6 beers on tap (mostly locals) and a handful of decent bottled beers. Give it a shot though, they might have a good seasonal on tap.

atmosphere: Located in the upstairs of a considerably old building, this place is a local mainstay that has been here for years and years while Hillsborough changed around it. A walk up the creaky stairs brings you to a room partially divided...a bar area with a few tables and a dining area. TV's hang here and there. Everything is wooden, and has a very rustic, traditional feel to it. Interesting nostalgia and nude art hangs all over the dark stained wooden walls. At night, the lighting is low and the bar has a comfortable feel to it. The crowd is a mix of students, just-graduates, and older townies. It's pretty calm but get get loud on game nights and weekends.
quality: Can't really say I've ever had a beer that had gone bad.
service: The service varies widely, both at the bar and the tables. As a rule, though, it's good enough. If you go at night and sit at a table to drink, the wait can occasionally be lengthy.
selection: Pretty good selection of mainstream macros, local macros (one or two edentons and some CBC taps), and pseudo-macros. There's a "good beer" cooler with a glass display window, which makes it easier to pick out a beer. There are usually at least 20 or more beers to choose from at any given time.
food: For bar food, the stuff here is pretty darn good. Great chili, gumbo, and reubens. The menu rarely changes.
value: Most of the beers are fairly priced, and the nighly special usually brings one or two down into the $2.50 range. My favorite is the $3.00 "potluck special," in which the bartender chooses a beer for you. The food is also very well priced...most items between 5 and 6 dollars.
