Smell is delicious malty and nutty like peanuts. Pours to a golden color with a muti-sized bubble head that stays awhile and clings to the glass. Taste is again malty and nutty with a moderate bitterness steady throughout. Finish is only slightly bitter and still nutty. Very balanced, equally sweet and bitter from start to finish. Has good body and the carbonation is spot on. A tasty ale, light as the style precludes but not lacking in flavor. Not a complex brew but goes down good. Very original flavor. It's a keeper here where there isn't much variety.
Nov'09 update:
Bitterness has seemed to be increased a bit, very balanced and tasty. In my book, is very much a West Coast style of english ale, more citrusy bitter than typical english. I'm upgrading the taste

'05 Re-review:

The beer wasn't disappointing as it was the last time. actually, it wasn't bad at all.

At sight, the beer pours a caramel tone with a considerable amber head that retains for about 5 minutes after poured.

The smell- rather enhanced after I read my past assessments- was of roasted malts with some citrus addition. It was interesting- not the first time for a brewpub beer- but pleasant nonetheless.

The taste wasn't bad at all. a bit watery but still. the maltyness was there. not fruity, not strong, simply somewhat sweet- as though you could feel the malt- continued thereafter with a considerable but immediate bitterness. the hops are apparently important for Palos de Moguer, and in this case it makes a very pleasant contrast between sweet and bitter at the end.

There is considerable taste in the beer, despite the slight watery feel. It's also more carbonated than you'd expect, which makes it a decent thirst quencher in any case.

re-reviewing is fun- my palate's evolved, and now I'm making it less and less biased.

A: Very rich & slightly dark golden with a bleached bone, off-white head of medium size that is made of large bubbles. It falls very fast and doesn't really leave any lacing. Clear with a fair number of good size bubbles rising from all over.

S: Grainy leaning to fresh milled malt with a bit of sweetness and some low crystal / caramel. Softly herbal & nicely floral hops. Pleasant touch of a diacetyl / honey impression. Quite fair strength and reasonably inviting. Fruity & estery hints as it warms.

T: Malt forward with a nice mix of low C & honey like sweetness and fresh milled pale malt. More sweet than grainy with a hint of toasty malts. Hint of fruity esters. Softly herbal & flowery hops with a nicely balancing bitterness. Honey impression and increasingly herbal hops linger together in the finish.

M: Medium body with matched carbonation that is softly expansive and has some softness to its texture. Ghost hint of sweetness up front, but fairly attenuated overall. Herbal hop drying in the finish.

D: A fairly pleasant & appealing pale that is leaning toward a summer mild. I would prefer it to have some more darker C-malt notes, but then it might be "just" a mild. Oh well it's good as it is. Milds are a good thing – I don't understand why more people do not appreciate small flavorful beers.

Whilst in Bogota and I visited Palos De Moguer and the second beer I tried was the Colon Rubia. The appearance was golden in color with good carbonation and white head. The aroma carried hints of lemon and grain....somewhat similar to their Light beer. The taste had more malt than hop with hint of lemon. The mouthfeel was easy to drink and smooth....certainly worth a try.

Amber color with a three finger head with medium retention and leaving laces.
Sweet malt aroma with notes of floral hops, honey and vanilla.
Refreshing taste with a spicy feeling. Well balanced between its grainy malts and herbal and flower hops with hints of honey. Dry aftertaste, a bit buttery.
Light to watery body with medium carbonation, but with a expansion feature.
That would be an amazing beer if it had more body and keeping the same proportion but increasing the quantity of its hops added to the recipe.
