This is an English-style Brown Ale. Made with hops, and caramelized & dark malts which give it its characteristic toasted flavor. Developed with Munich 10 and Munich 20 malts.

Vanilla and coffee roast. Chocolate malts. The best of the 3 that I tried.

Black color with a caramel head with low retention.
Aroma of toasted malts and caramel with notes of coffee.
Predominant coffee taste with hints of earthy hops and coca-cola. No sharp aftertaste, just fades away.
Light body with medium carbonation.
Beer with low complexity compared to its peers. On the positive side, coffee notes were at the level of its Colombian underlying.

A: Light brown with a hint of red/dark orangey hue. Good size light tan head that falls fairly fast to a fair ring. Lots of bubbles at first and then it slows to a few active streams of fine bubbles. Not really anything for lacing.

S: Hint of a sour twang – perhaps a bit more than a hint. Nut brown malts with a bit of sweetness. Light touch of chocolate & an hint of coffee grounds. Whisper of herbal hops in the background. Okay strength, but just passable character.

T: Light sour/tart/acid pucker is present throughout. Doesn't quite over dominate, but it sure is there. Brief flash of sweet at the start of the middle leads into biscuit pale base malts with hints of bread crust and a moderate roast note that increases in the end and finish. Balanced herbal hops with mild bitterness middle to end. Hops turn a bit woody in the finish and linger along with the pucker twang.

M: A touch shy of medium body with CO2 pretty well balanced. Quite dry and attenuated. Drying finish that is pushed along with a bit of an acid / tart pucker.

D: Just a passably fair brown. Perhaps a bit infected (pucker), so maybe it was better fresher? But then the bottle says 21 JUN 12, so it ain't that old. It was certainly better when I had it on tap at the restaurant. It is not bad, but nothing to seek out. Unless you happen to be in Bogota and want to try something new to you.

Whilst in Bogota and I visited Palos De Moguer and the second beer I tried was the Colon Negra. When I read Negra I was expected it to be a bit darker...I see BA tagged it as a brown ale...so maybe it should be named Colon Marron???? The color was a ruby red with decent white head. The scent included some roast and slight espresso. The body wasn't there for me....I like a bit more heavy when drinking browns, porters, etc. The taste had very sweet malt to start then finishes like a watered coffee. The taste made the mouth feel a bit dodgie, but fairly smooth.

Picked up a sixer at Exito strolling through the beer aisle. Have yet to check out Palos itself but in the meantime we'll give this brew a whirl. Bottle smell is roasted malts and hints of unsweetened chocolate. Pours to a very, very dark red that is barely translucent. Head is thin and dissappears quickly. Taste is a chaulky roasted malt taste very prevalent of english ales. No real bitterness present, just a hint in the background. Mouthfeel has good carbonation but seems a little thin. Finish on taste is a little more bitter than start but not too much. This really is not far from a porter notwithstanding more backbone. Very drinkable.

Had this on tap at Palos de Moguer in Lima, Peru. Easily one of the best beers available in Peru. A reasonably malty beer, not too sweet, just a straight up session brown ale. A bit thin and over carbonated for my taste, but a gem in a wasteland of beer.

'05 Re-review:

This porter seems to fit plenty into the characteristics of a proper porter.

The pour is dark althoug turns slightly amber-mahogany when turned to the light. atop, the head is creamy and tan, although it isn't overly retentive. nice view- onto the smell.

To the nose it seemed to be well roasted and a caramel feel- as well as a somewhat bitter, woody smell- were great additions to what the beer was like.

The taste contrasted with most porters I've tried. It's basically well pulled- a chocolatey, burnt feel of malts- although just a bit watery. but not sweet. the only sweet is a slight soury feel that you get- somewhat preparing you for a bit of malty sweetness- but the malt is rather dry and the taste is quite strong. The sweet that never comes is replaced with an immediate bitterness, not looking to make a big contrast, just adequate for the beer that doesn't go off balance at any point.

carbonated, as should be, to help the style. It seemed to be a bit watery for what the style should be (heck, I'd love to chew on it) but the dry, sweetless feel was quite nice to be honest. alcohol is low and well hidden all-in-all, which doesn't explain really how it still feels like a strong, proper brew.
