draft at Brouwer's

a: served in a standard shaker pint, walking man is an amber-copper in color, sporting a finger's worth of off-white carbonation that retains well and leaves good lacing

s: the nose opens immediately with a formidable mixture of resinous pine and grapefruit hops brushed onto a structure of caramel malts, grainy, toast, nice start

m: moderately carbonated with a medium body, a little sugar weight

t: malty flavors with deep toast, caramel and toffee form a solid malt backbone, dark pine hops meld with flavors of bitter grapefruit - strong and lingering long, deep and rindy, dig the huge hop profile

o: a great ipa, loaded with huge, complex nw hops while maintaining easy drinkability

Been a long time since I've had this beer. On tap at the Red Hot last night.

The beer pours a slightly hazy, golden amber color with good head retention and lacing. The nose is attractive as well, and seems unique to walking man and the NW. The beer smells as if it will be quite dry (which of course it is), with very little citrus evident. Otherwise, I get some light balsa wood, burnt toast, pepper and light honey. The flavor profile replicates the nose in this dry IPA, and I'm impressed by how well the hoppy bitterness seems to blend into the flavor profile. There's some noticeable, underlying bitterness, but it doesn't seem to overpower or dominate the flavor profile. The beer is quite dry otherwise, and has something of a soft, creamy mouthfeel. The beer comes across as if it's no nitro (it wssn't), with almost completely unnoticeable alcohol.

Always an interesting beer to try, though not made in a style that I typically care for. Was very happy to find it on tap at the Red Hot last night.

First had: on tap at their brewpub

Poured a clear copper-orange with a decent cap of white head. Aroma of citrus and floral hops, subdued malts, and a touch of funk. Good combination of hops in the taste, citrus, pine, flowers, some caramel maltiness came through with a bit of wet cardboard. Medium body, bitter finish, and drinks just fine for the style.

Clear pale gold colour with a creamy, off-white head. Good head retention and some lacing.

Fresh floral hop aroma with some great citrus notes. Very good.

Crisp malt with a big dose of floral hops. Great bitterness. Very crisp and well balanced.

Medium light body with moderate carbonation. Good.

A really solid ale. Good flavour and balance and all of the punch expected of an IPA.

On tap @ the Walking Man Brewing Co. (Stevenson, WA) on 8/25/11. Served in a pint glass.

Pours a clear copper, with an off-white head. This retains with a thin yet rich creaminess, leaving back a cascade of sticky lacing. The aroma smells floral, citrusy, and a touch dank, while being dotted with notes of pine and spice here and there. Underlying malts add a bit of a stiff toasted graininess underneath.

The taste is grapefruit and pine, which is rather quickly balanced out by a hefty dose of caramel sweetness that has some toasted feeling edges to it. The finish is leafy feeling, and a bit raw, with lingering dryness and spice. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and sharp feeling pretty much the whole way through the swallow but there is a bit of underlying slickness to get this relatively easy. Alcohol seems well hid for the most part, with only some light warmth coming out in the finish.

This was pretty decent but it ultimately left me wanting more (especially following their much superior Pale Ale). I liked the fresh citrus flavors and bitterness that this brought to the table but it seemed to get cut off way too fast at times by the amount of malt activity that was going on and could have ended up using a bit more definition overall. I was just expecting much more of a well-rounded effort from this.

Poured a deep orange-amber into a pint glass with a finger of loose off-white head. Aroma dominated by grapefruit and caramel with just a bit grass.

Moderate carbonation and a smooth, slightly resinous mouthfeel. Solid caramel malt backbone up front but not too sweet; good balance with the grapefruit and orange hops.

Not overly bitter, sweet, or anything else -- just a nice, balanced, easy-drinking IPA (ABV is completely masked).
