Big thanks to Toby for the handbottle of this Walking Man offering.
Pours a deep, nearly impenetrable black with some ruby tints and a very nice light tan head that retains quite well leaving good lacing.
Nose is a bit weak, I get some roasted malt mostly, but there is a noticeable hop presence.
Hmmm. This is basically like a really hoppy porter. Roasted malt is clear and defined in the flavor with some slight smoke as well. There are clear hops at play here, and obvious bitterness, but there isn't much hop resin or flavor at work. There is definitely some, and you can tell this beer has hops aplenty, but the roasted malt just makes it tough to pick out. That being said, this is a FINE tasting beer. A nice dry bitter finish with roasted malt and some hop flavor in the aftertaste.
Mouthfeel is right where it should be. Good viscosity and great dryness compliments the bitter finish.
Drinkability shines especially well on this brew. the 9.6% abv would have SHOCKED me had i not read it ahead of time. This one drinks like a 5% porter would.
Overall this is a very tasty beer. I would like to see a little bit less porter and a little bit more IPA, but its good to see black DIPAs coming out, and good to see beers stretching to both ends of the spectrum as far as dark beer to IPA ratio in a melded style. I would be happy to drink this beer often, and would probably hurt myself doing so. A great offering, and one i would love to be close to. Not in a particular niche that people love to try to put beers in, but the taste buds are happy, and thats all i need.

Pours a deep brown with ruby highlights, sticky tan head with excellent retention and lacing.
Loads of roasted malt (chocolatey and burnt) battles for attention with substantial bitterness from the moment it hits the tongue all the way to the rather dry finish. Rather than a sharp contrast, the burnt/bitter flavors somehow meld together quite nicely. Tasty stuff, almost dangerously so given how well the ABV is hidden.
Really nice example of a 'black IPA'/Cascadian Dark Ale/whatever. A quality offering from an excellent small brewery.

I stopped in at Walking Man this afternoon and was greeted by the newest beer ... not even on the board yet .. Big Black Homo (thought police are likely gonna jump all over this one)... I had a pint and was immediately happy .. this is a great brew that I am gonna call a DIPA just because I never thought some of he other originator Black DIPA's should be called "American Strong Ales"... see Stone 11th.
This is poured from a brewery poured/galt capped 22 into my shaped SA glass... beautiful 2 finger tan head above a fairly clear dark dark brown/verging on black brew... only deep walnut highlites appear when held to a bright light.
the nose is not as CCC hoppy as I was expecting.. more of spicy/floral hoppiness.. there is a ton of dark malt/coffee aroma in this brew..
Flavor is a palate bomb of hops and dark malts (seriously, no coffee??).. a little acrid at some points.. but the overall package has a great dry hop blast and more than enough/bordering on burnt flavors.. all flavors right now are very sharp.. not really melding greatly.. still a nice brew and a pretty damn interesting and very fresh take on an emerging style... The body is a little lite for a DIPA... but somehow, it seems a little more creamy than the HE.
I am very happy I paid the $1 toll... and finally discovered walking man.. I guarantee it will at least be a stop on every trip to PDX for me.. possibly on the way there and back.
