620ml bottle from Hero Supermarket, Yogyakarta, Java (Rp 45,000):
Black in colour & opaque, this one is topped with a half centimetre head that's beige & bubbly but holds quite well. There was some bubbles on both the surface & through the body of the beer whilst head retention was good too. The nose is a dark & semi-sweet one with some faint alcohol notes & sugars, it had a hint of a foreign extra stout about it with some liquorice showing & a little lactose towards the end. The taste is a little more uneven with some roasted malts & nutty flavours to start followed by some toasted malts & earthy touches but nothing is too pronounced. The body is a medium one but it's quite sweet & oily with a smooth feel that's softly carbonated too but balanced & easy to drink. It seems a little stronger than the alcohol content suggested, with only a tiny bit of alcohol showing but it was enjoyable throughout & one of the better Indonesian beers I’ve tried too.

Clocks in at +/- 4.90% ABV - the same as Indonesian Guinness Foreign Export Stout. Let's see who wins in the battle of the Indonesian stouts...though price wise, it's worth noting that at 20200 IRP a 330ml can in Bali, Anker is in the lead.
Head is better than Indonesian Foreign Extra, but its khaki froth is short-lived, disappearing like 1965 Indonesian communists. The body colour is as dark as that joke, coming in at the usual opaque black observed in beers of this style.
Aroma is of schwarzbier-esque black bread, chocolate specialty malt, and dark malt sweetness. No noticeable roast here, but I think I find a blip of malted milk balls (Whoppers). Aromatic intensity is mild for a stout.
Taste is plain, bringing weak chocolate flavour and generic dark malt sweetness. But it's balanced, or at least it's not cloying, and that's more than I can say about many Indonesian beers. Surprisingly decent depth of flavour, though it won't dazzle those familiar with the stouts coming out of Ireland, the UK, Scandinavia, and North America. I do like it.
Texture is medium-bodied, smooth, wet, well-carbonated, unrefreshing, and of average heft and weight on the palate.
Overall, it's a commendable stab at a stout from a Southeast Asian brewery, and I find it not only drinkable, but preferable to many of the undercarbonated 3-4% "real" stouts being shoved into casks in the UK. I'd sooner go for Guinness Foreign Extra when itching for a stout in Indonesia, but if we're giving credit where it's due, this (unlike the travesty that is Anker Pilsener) is a surprisingly competent entry in its style, even weighed against traditional British paragons - and that's saying something given this is brewed in a Muslim-dominant country. A must-try when in the country.

Trying the Anker Stout, a can that I brought back from a trip to Jakarta. The Beer pours a dark opaque color with thin ecru head that is leaving spotty lacing. The smell....quite honestly....a very faint black licorice....which makes it almost fruity. The taste is kind of bland....I am not picking up much of the usual suspects expected from a stout....there are hints of roast but nothing to get excited over. The mouthfeel is medium to light body with lots of carbonation. Overall it is not a great stout....but at least it mixes up the beer menu in Indonesia.

Pours to a deep root beer brown with a tan head. Smells of molasses and malt with some black licorice. Taste is roasted malts with a nice black licorice start and a finish that fades nicely with a slightly bitter smokiness. Mouthfeel is light and crisp. A very tasty yet light stout ideal to imbibe when in Bali.

This one poured out of the can a very dark brown with mahogany edges and a big, fluffy tan head that settled to a thin cap. Good head retention and there was plenty of lacing, thick to start and spotty as my glass was emptied. Malty aromas of roasted and burnt grains, toffee and chocolate, along with a hint of cherry. The flavour was thin compared to the promise of the aroma, little bitterness and a bit of roast, grain, and cherry character. Still, not bad. Light bodied and quite dry, carbonation was average. It was easy drinking, but the thin flavour definitely worked against it.
