Tight pilsener with strong flavor. Similar with its more famous 'brother' Bintang, but with more taste to it. And much better than that sh***y Heineken.

First dinner in Indonesia and decided to try Anker Bir....a local domestic brand. The appearance was a pale clear yellow with decent carbonsaton that formed into a nice white head. There was not much in the smell, which made it un-impressive. There was a funky taste with this beer that hurt the rating. It is not a very good Czech Pilsner. The funky taste also hindered the mouthfeel....cuz I really didnt want it in my mouth.

While Bintang Bir Pilsner is Indonesia's most famous beer and most popular among tourists and expats alike, most Indonesians I've met who (can afford to) drink beer seem to prefer Anker. This is not saying much, as most will also automatically mix it with local Sprite to make a shandy.

That said, Anker is a stock standard SE Asian lager with hints of a nasty chemical additive or two that is only drinkable ice cold after a long hot and humid Indonesian day. It's golden, it's crystal clear, it has a small head and is cheaper than Bintang by a few thousand rupiah.

Knocked back a couple of these to unwind after a late night of work followed by a client presentation.

Appearance: Pale straw color, two finger white head that fades quickly. Minor lacing.

Smell: Light aroma, but distinguished only by corn and metal (despite coming out of a bottle - impressive!).

Taste: Mineral water that's had grain steeped in it and some bitter medicine added. Not very good by usual standards, but to be honest it's tasting pretty good right now.

Mouthfeel & Drinkability: Light mouthfeel, lingering aftertaste. Low drinkability, but not too many options to choose from in Jakarta.

330 ml can, as Anker Bir Pilsener ("Limited Edition" concerning the brewery's 75th anniversary - I suppose the "limited edition" only affects the design of the can, not the beer inside.) A gift from my Indonesian-born sister-in-law. ABV is 4.9%. Very pale and crystal clear yellow colour, big head. Sweetish and slightly sickly "industrial" aroma, notes of grass and maize. Soft mouthfeel. The flavour is bland with some sweetness and minimal bitterness, utterly boring.

Crystal clear and bright yellow with a fizzy white head composed of coarse bubbles. The cap disappeared quickly, but a smattering of bubbles remained on the surface due to the constant fizzing. The aroma was maize and cereal with a faint spicy hop character. The flavour was very sweet with little bitterness or hop flavour. Cereal grains again, plus slight fruity esters in the finish. It also gained a light sourness as it warmed. Light bodied and very dry, semi-crisp with high carbonation that bordered on being harsh. Not much to see here, just a bland lager with little character. At least it was moderately thirst quenching in the heat, but there were much better beers readily available in Bali during my trip.
